Hufflepuffs: True, loyal, not afraid of toil. (Far too lazy, not a commitment person.)
Ravenclaw: Those of wit & learning. (Memory disability; I can learn, but I can't remember, horrid at math.)
Gryffindor: Brave, daring, chivalrous. (Sounds like a bunch of jocks, preps, & politically/religiously motivated people.)
Slytheins: Use any means to achieve their ends. (Takes advantage of situations & operates from the shadows? Sure)
Politically motivated Prep? Don't forget about pompous, and sign me up!

Voldemort was in Slytherin. Bellatrix Lestrange was in Slytherin. You mention like three characters, and think they're the most prominent, when they're not.
But that's just two alumni. Hell, Slughorn's another alumnus, he's just a bumbling dunce with a guilty concience. Everyone else of the Slyth people we meet during Hogwarts (Draco, Crabbe, Goyle, Blaise, Pansy, etc.) are usually depicted as guffawing jerks, none of whom seem to be particularly bright, just eager to ***** and deride without actually accomplishing anything..
You keep mentioning freaking children, when Slytherin was the house for several death eaters, Dolores Umbridge, and Lucius Malfoy. I can't even take you seriously. I think Slytherin wasn't allowed to take part in the hogwarts battle, because they weren't sure what side they'd be on.

Merlin was in Slytherin, one of the strongest wizards.
And you identify with these horrible people?
Merlin believed that wizards should help Muggles and live peacefully with them.[2] To this end, he founded the Order of Merlin, an organisation which promoted Muggle rights, creating rules against using magic on them.[2]
What's so horrible about that? You're kind of ignoring that they weren't all evil.
Snape was a Slytherin, and he wasn't all that evil, nor was he even manipulative, he was manipulated by Voldermort and Dumbledore (he made him kill him, come on). However, he thought Voldy would spare Harry's mum rather than just killing everyone. So I guess he's not all that bright.

He seems like just a clever, ambitious kid who got bullied into a state of hatred. It's either bully or get bullied in Slytherin.

Back on topic: I would be in Slytherin, I'm ambitious and I'm not above manipulating the rules and others to get what I want, even if it is a morally good outcome that I'm after.

Now, time for a shameless plug; Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality [http://hpmor.com/] is a very fun read where a lot of the characters get explored in more depth, Bellatrix's story made me cry my eyes out. It's very in favour of disolving the house stereotypes and Quirrel actively seeks to make the houses intermingle. It's very SFW but has mild shipping warnings for Draco/Hermione or Hermione/Harry.

Oh and here's some awesome anime style fanart [http://dinosaurusgede.deviantart.com/gallery/27136676] of it too :D

Well... Both my best friend and one my best friend's ex-girlfriends would be in Ravenclaw... I always saw myself as a Slytherpuff of a Griffinclaw who could never fit within any of the Hogwart houses to begin with... *looks at his overall skin tone* Yeah, that's the reason...

But, apparently, I would make a good Ravenclaw if I allowed the sorting hat to choose it for me... since he would first tell me that I could basically fall into any of the houses if I wanted to... except maybe Slytherin, but the other houses are up for grabs... and then tell me I would be better as a professor, if I choose to become one in the future...

According to Pottermore,I'm a Ravenclaw. Makes sense, I love learning about pointless trivia and I can get lost for hours on Wikipedia bouncing from link to link. Also, apparently my wand is made of elder.
I don't know what quizzes exactly but I've taken a couple and I always end up in Ravenclaw. I have to admit, I would get a real kick out of solving a riddle to get into our secret common room. I always got along with weirdos like Luna Lovegood too; people think she's creepy but I admire her ability to see things from multiple perspectives.
The question I get stuck on is would I end up going after more Gryffindor chicks or more Slytherin chicks. I don't know, I see them both as having a certain depth of purpose and a kinkiness that I always found alluring.

Honestly, Slytherin is the obvious house for me. I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of the dark arts. Call me evil, that won't stop me from blasting off your face.

Really, Durmstrang would make a lot more sense for me. I would not fit in with all the cheery characters in Hogwarts.

Hufflepuff because "the brave go to Gryffindor, the clever go to Ravenclaw, the ambitious go to Slytherin. Whatevers left, just chuck 'em in Hufflepuff."

They don't seem to stand out much like me.

Srs face though, probably Gryffindor. I've been so strong for the past few years. A few people have said they don't understand how I stay smiling because if they had to put up with what I have, they'd be a wreck.

Edit: I take back the Moody bit. After research it seems his house was unknown.
Why does every fan fiction ever seem to have him in Slytherin?
I think some people think this because since Moody is an Auror (Dark Wizard Hunter), he would have a "ends justify the means" mentality, a trait often associated with Slytherin

OT: According to Pottermore, I'm in Ravenclaw which I am very happy with considering that I do love learning and also because Luna is my favourite character

I thought I would get Hufflepuff, which, let's face it, is seen as the house for "the rest", although it's supposed to be trustworthy and loyal. I like to think I put an emphasis on fairness and I'm pretty trustworthy. But Gryffindor, apparently, which I'm happy with. Probably only barely. What I do know is I'm far too lazy for Ravenclaw and not manipulative or selfish enough for Slytherin.

Ravenclaw. I'm the kind of person that values intelligence as the most important quality a person can have. Not much of a learner, mind you, but when it comes to analytical thinking and logical reasoning, I value that way above your principles, and ambition and whathever else it was the other houses had.

Well on Pottermore I did the quiz twice for some reason and first time I got Hufflepuff and then I got Slytherin, which would the two houses I wouldn't want. Obviously any fan would choose Gryffindor but I don't think I'm, brave enough for them so Ravenclaw would probably suit me best seeing as I like to use brain over brawn. I'm okay with my allocation in Slytherin minus the whole evil thing...

I'm glad someone got that reference. More people need to watch that musical. :D

Now I think about it...there aren't any main characters from Hufflepuff in the books apart from Cedric, are there? They really don't have a good reputation.
My girlfriend made me watch it. It was funny, though, so I can't complain per se.

AVPM is right about the houses, though, which is why we don't see many Hufflepuffs. It's basically, "good house, bad house." Then they have two more houses, which become "smart house" and "everyone else house." I mean, even Hufflepuff's characteristic of hard workers....Not all that unique. You'd think it would apply to the other three houses

This is especially strange since Rowling reportedly feels she belongs in Hufflepuff. I mean, fair enough and all that, but it's strange that the house she reportedly identifies with gets so little praise and a horrible description that's not too specific.

Considering the Sorting Hat takes your personal preference into choice, I think it wouldn't have a problem putting me into Ravenclaw. The students who made the hat recoil and shout "Slytherin!" were obviously chanting the name internally but the ones who took a while like Harry were obviously talking with the hat internally...so I would request Ravenclaw and likely be asked a number of riddles or, something along those lines.

Well... apparently according to several (2) online surveys I'm Gryffindor... ugh.

Although it was close:
Gryffindor - 13
Slytherin - 11
Ravenclaw - 10
Hufflepuff - 9

Apparently I'm well rounded enough. I think I'll just be headmaster instead.

Well, according to Pottermore I'm a Ravenclaw! I always thought of myself as more of a Hufflepuff, but I suppose I am too oddball for them =P

EDIT: All my friends who tried it ended up in Slytherin. Kind of jealous; Merlin was a Slytherin...

Oh in pretty much any quiz for this sort of thing I tend to end up in ol' Hufflepuff. Always a decent person to trust but will end up as less then a side character. It is not a bad role for one who doesn't want the spotlight anyway.
This pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter, sob thank you for saving me a job.

Pottermore has me in Ravenclaw, i'm not surprised to be honest

ah, but in the second book,
Harry asked Dumbledore why the hat put him in Gryffindor as opposed to Slytherin, and Harry replied with because I asked it to, the response to which was (abridged) that it is a person's choices that matter, moreso than their abilities
a similar thing likely happened with Hermione between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor

Hufflepuff to be sure. I'm not one for the spotlight, I'm not ambitious, I'm not brave, I'm not clever. But I am trustworthy and hardworking (so I'm told).
