Supreme Commander 2.

After playing TA, SC, and Forged Alliance, I stood in line, with my copy of Borderlands (to atone. See piracy thread), and my copy of SC2, thinking "Well, Forged Alliance got a bit meh, because it was just 6 missions, different voices, and not really much else. What if SC2 is like that, but worse?"

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. This was Supreme Commander I was talking about. The successor to Total Annihilation, and the sequel to one of the non-RPGs that I've spent the most time playing ever.

I couldn't be right. SC2 would never suck.

Oh god, how wrong I was.

But on the other hand, I liked Dragon Age 2. The problem with sequels is that people judge them against the previous games, instead of on its own merits. If you don't go into the game assuming that DA2 will be a heavy D&D tactical game, then as an action-oriented RPG, it's not that bad. Just don't go looking for a particularly visual plot. I finished it in 30 hours, and had real issues trying to pick out the story missions...

DA2 like woah.

The thing is I wasn't that disappointed with it until I finished it and I was like, 'What did I just play?'

It was such a let down from Origins. :(

I'm worried about Mass Effect 3 too. The clip where they were getting excited about what was essentially Gears of War gameplay was like :| Also they are shoehorning in multiplayer in which which makes me EXTREMELY worried.
Yeah, I had a delayed realization of how shitty DA2 was. Me and a buddy of mine played through it and realized simultaneously how bad it really was after talking about all the things that bothered us about the game.

DA2 was such a steaming pile of shit.

I once did that with Halo 3: ODST. Never again...

Except I can't stop myself. I'm straight onto anything Mass Effect 3 related.

Anyone know what alphabet that second word is in? Looks like really early Latin.

I no longer bother with getting hyped. For example, I could be hyped about Bioshock Infinite, but I'm not. I do look forward to whenever it gets released, but beyond that I just don't think about it that much.

That said, I was disappointed with DA2. It went really well until you never leave the same freaking areas. And the story just got long winded.

I was worried about Skyrim after Oblivion but it managed to deliver a fun experience for over 100 hours. That's all I can really ask of a game, even though now I start to see so many things that could be better about it. I'm waiting for a couple months for some good mods to come out after the creation kit is released, then I think there'll be a lot of good stuff.

I was a bit concerned about Skyrim, but I reasoned that there'd be few things that the modding community couldn't eventually fix. And I'm also afraid that ME3 might let me down, but I'd play it anyway. Besides, I'm almost expecting it at this point. That way, I won't be too disappointed if it's terrible, but I'll be pleasantly surprised if it isn't.

No, I never think 'What if it sucks', because I have already pre-ordered it, and if it really is that bad it's not that much money wasted, and I'll at least be able to get a story out of it.

Games that sounded good originally, but turned out crap:
DNF
DA2
Skyrim (Not crap, but rather meh)

Other than that I tend to do quite well in what I buy. Most games I'll give a miss because I know I won't like them, and most others that I buy I do enjoy.

FFXIII. I stuck with it all the way through, telling myself "I bet it's going to get awesome any second now!" It never did.
Also, Dante's Inferno. I realize I was being naive, and that there was a high likelihood that a videogame recreation of Inferno would turn out completely awful, but I was hopeful. I now use the game as a drinks coaster, after about an hour's worth of play.

I should have asked myself that about ME2. What a pile of crap. Since then i've managed to lower my expectations about games. So far every company with the exception of Bethesda has managed to dissappoint me at least once.

Other than Pokemon Diamond, not really.
This.

This was the game where the legendary trio was merely the same Pokemon edited 2 other times.

And before you get on me about Black and White's recolored trio, at least they had type variation.

On topic: I'm really glad that Portal 2's DLC was free, because the story behind the Peer Review DLC SUCKED. After playing through puzzles that were headache-inductively hard, I was like: "That's it?!"

That DLC really put me in a shitty mood.

It's okay. It's okay. I've.... suffered too. We can make it through this. Together.

I'm not a fanboy. I hold out the possibility that any game might suck.

What's so hard about this?
I don't think its possible to explain it to someone who has never experienced it before.

"It's like describing color to a creature without eyes."

Any game I'm excited about, I assume is actually crap.
That way, I'm either right or pleasantly surprised.
Who said being a cynic is depressing?

Spore. I loved the idea of that game when I heard about it and rushed out to grab it as soon as it came out, after over a year in anticipation. I still find it difficult to buy new games without trying them first...

I was gutted about Brink too. The premise seemed sooo good!

Spyro: Enter The Dragonfly.

If you did not grow up with the original trilogy, it's impossible to fathom the magnitude of the expectations I had. A feeling that could only be surpassed by the surreal amount of disappointment the game brought with it when it finally got released.

Also, Final Fantasy XIII, I suppose... But my hopes were already a bit crushed by FF X-2 and FF XII, so it's not like I didn't know I could very well expect a massive failure.

Though, I suppose, in hindsight, the disappointment was more massive than expected...

Oh!
And Legaia 2.
Waiting so long for a sequel to the original Legend of Legaia and then they deliver something with stale graphics, re-hashed music, a generic story with generic characters and a total lack of Seru. I mean, sure, they continued to expand on the awesome battle system from the first one, but that's it.

Not really anything I have high hopes for in the future... Perhaps GTA V? But we all know how that's going to end: nice graphics, nice soundtrack, tons of detail, big map, same old gameplay.

If I follow a game's development I don't let myself get hyped up about it. Because no matter what if you are hyping yourself up for a game it will not live up to your expectations. It happened once with Prototype and I will never again let myself be taken away.

The only game that ever fell short for me, was Dino Crisis 3. Anyone who has played all 3 of the dino crisis games will know what I mean.

I don't really get hyped about games, the closest I've ever come to being The Old Republic, which I pre-ordered after playing the beta.

However, I did watch the hype surrounding Skyrim. I saw in the months leading up to it people calling it the game of the year. A few weeks after it came out, I recieved it as a gift from a fan of my show, so decided to try it out.

I knew that it was never going to be as good as people were making it out to be.

Not only was I right, I was Omniscient.

Skyrim now has it's place on my Top Twenty Worst Games of All Time
I don't think Omniscient is the word you were looking for. Also, skyrim has it's place in my heart as one of my top 5 best games of all times. Neither of our opinions means much to anyone else.

Hmm. I would be tempted to say Dead Island, but I didn't buy it, in part because I was fairly certain that no game could possibly live up to "that" trailer. And, gee, I was right.

(No offense to anyone who liked Dead Island; I understand the final, patched, official version is a perfectly decent game. It's just not a game that had a whole lot to do with the trailer.)

I rarely buy games before they're rigorously reviewed any more, so while I'm occasionally disappointed, I'm rarely out-and-out blindsided.

Has there ever been a game that you built up to incredible expectations only to have those expectations completely and utterly demolished?
Too Human.

The concept - an RPG about Norse Mythology in a cyberpunk setting employing a deep "devil may cry" like combat system.

The execution - one of the worst games ever made.

HOW DO YOU MESS THAT CONCEPT UP THAT BADLY?!
you too?

That game could have been good but somehow came out terrible.
