Like a lot of people. I play guitar. I'm self taught, and have been playing for about three years. I'm not great at it, and my style is pretty sloppy. However, I love every second of it. Music is my form of expression, and it allows me to convey anything I'm feeling into a song or sound.(I get very into it)

As far as what I'd like to learn, I'd have to say anything. I love music and I love making music. Put an instrument in-front of me, and I'll do my best to play it, and even if it sounds awful, I'll love every second of it.
Omg, me too. My band teacher always gets made at me, because I close my eyes when I play. SO I can't watch him for instruction.

Piano, Grade 6

Theory is a *****
Excuse my ignorance, but what does grade mean?
Grades are levels. You start at zero, and after learning all the new stuff in each level, you play in an exam to an examiner. You play a few songs, you play a few scales and you answer a few questions. If you do well, you advance in grades. They get progressively MUCH harder as it goes along.

Grade 6 is "The Grade" to which everyone aspires. At 6, you know all you need to know to play any piece. Grades 7 and 8 (8 is highest) are basically learning how to play REALLY stupidly difficult pieces.

My dream is to one day play Hungarian Rhapsody. First I will play it properly, like this (WATCH IT all the way through, please. It's the greatest piano piece on earth)

Then I will learn to play it with a friend...like Victor Borge here (Victor was the world's greatest, funniest music-based comedian)

Thank you for enlightening me. Also, how old do you need to be to take those exams? And what instruments?
I have no idea how old you need to be. I did it when I was about...7 (my first exam). I think there's no limit within reason (no toddlers, obviously). As for what instruments, I'm guessing every instrument. You have different Boards, which have different exams and different criteria. I'm with the Associated Board of the Royal School of Music, but there are other ones. My brother, who plays electric guitar, uses a differnt board called the School of Rock (or Rock School). You can change between boards, though I think there would be a little bit of fiddling to achieve such a switch

How do you join boards?

Well, I'm fat and lazy, so you can guess what I play.

For those of you who aren't band geeks and don't get the inside joke, I have played Low Brass for eight years. Euphonium for all eight years, trombone for four, and Sousaphone/Tuba for three.

Before you make a polka joke, I can do "Walk this Way" on the tuba pretty damn well.
Really? I can play David Bowie's "Under Pressure"/Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby." I loved being a band nerd in high school! :p

yeah, these threads make my day, although most of the time I respond too late to truly make an impact on them.

No idea. If you get a teacher/tutor for whatever instrument, they'll get you up on a board. It was sooooo long ago. I didn't have to do any form-filling or anything, it just happened

French Horn and Mellophone.

I can pick out a tune or two on the piano as well. I was always envious of how string players could whip out their guitar or whatever, and start playing. People gather, sing along, etc. If you do that with brass, you won't get through the first 3 measures before fruit comes flying your way.

They are music exams there are a total of 8 in Uk & Ireland and I think 4 in America. Obviously 1 American is the standard of 2 Uk and Ireland. There are ones for practial and theory which are seperate.

OT: I am a grade 7 Clarinet player and I also play guitar.
