To me, 'Emo' behavior is being extremely whinny and overly dramatic (more so than the usual teenager) and acting like the wold is going to end because the slightest thing goes wrong (i.e. they're get a three subject notebook instead of the preferred five-subject notebook, they get original recipe chicken instead of extra crispy, the store only has diet coke and no regular coke).
The 'Emo' dressing style ,again as I see, is very similar to the 'Goth' style minus the black nail polish and white face make up of the Goths. 'Emo' styled hair usually has one strip or hunk of hair that hangs down over one (or sometimes both) eye.

Yeah, I find that sexy for some reason.
You do realize that that is an idealized version, right? And like any other social subgroup, not the norm.

After looking around on a few forums I found that the term "emo" is interpreted in many different ways. So my question to you my fellow Escapists is, what do you think "emo" is?
To quote wikipedia:

Emo (pronounced /ˈiːmoʊ/) is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics...

...Today emo is commonly tied to both music and fashion as well as the emo subculture. Usually among teens, the term "emo" is stereotyped with wearing skinny jeans, sometimes in bright colors, and tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands. Studded belts and black wristbands are common accessories in emo fashion. Some males also wear thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.

The emo fashion is also recognized for its hairstyles. Popular looks include long side-swept bangs, sometimes covering one or both eyes. Also popular is hair that is straightened and dyed black. Bright colors, such as blue, pink, red, or bleached blond, are also typical as highlights in emo hairstyles. Short, choppy layers of hair are also common. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad. In the early 2000s, emo fashion was associated with a clean cut look but as the style spread to younger teenagers, the style has become darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the color black replacing sweater vests.

Emo has been associated with a stereotype that includes being particularly emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden. It has also been associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide.

Emo is a teenage phase, based on listening to certain music, dressing in a certain fashion and having that hair.

Though they'd probably all claim to be individuals. Ahem.

Here in Dublin, they all tend to congregate around a particular part of the city centre in large groups, probably for safety. They're loud and dramatic, and though they'd claim to not care what passers-by think of them, they invariably do and couldn't stand any amount of prolonged verbal abuse before breaking down in tears.

Something along the lines of that.

I'm gonna refer you to Snootyenglishman right below you, he has the right reason on why everyone hates emos, also emo chicks are fat
He gave one reason. One reason why HE hates them. Not every emo is an attention whore.Just the most notable ones are. It's the same with all social groups/organization.The most outspoken ones are the ones we notice.
Saying that every emo is an attention whore is like saying that every christian acts like those asshats at Westboro Baptist Church.
And saying that emo chicks are fat is just stupid. Then you could just as well say that there are no girls on the internet.Or that all gamers are nerds.

Yeah, I find that sexy for some reason.
...I'll be in my bunk.
Seriously, though, goth, scene, and emo women are AMAZINGLY delicious.

OP: Emo is a subgroup of the main goth culture, I think. Emo people are generally looking for attention, just like almost everyone else that dresses in that fashion, and I think that's why a lot of people don't like them. And the whiny, self-pitying attitude and poetry that is associated with them.

Depends. I consider people that are "emo" only to be people that actually fit the stereotype that conforms with "emo". Such as slitting your wrist and such. The music is a totally separate thing, which can actually be quite good at times despite the fact that "emo" is often used as a derogatory term.

However, people who just look emo but aren't into it personality-wise aren't emo. I don't mind them really as long as they don't attention whore. Besides, some emo girls are on the hot side... as long as they don't go over-the-top.
