I consider myself a hardcore gamer, but insofar as I accept that gaming is a huge part of my life and probably always will be.

I want a career in gaming, I like reading about gaming, I'm considering trying my hand at writing about gaming.

I like a gaming challenge, I push myself to be better, I play harder difficulties and almost unknown games just to try them out.

Does this make me better than anyone else? Hell no. It's who I am and I have no problem with that.

I didn't realise there was so much hate for the term 'Hardcore gamer' though... surprising.

Hardcore Gaming gets the bad rep because it's normally associated to people who tend to swear our ears off online. It's all fine with the preference thing but the problem is that dedicated gamers(if you can call them that) themselves don't exactly leave much option.

Hardcore gamers are people who make the mistake of using the their fun hobby as a means of self validating their worth as a manly man who does masculine things. Usually the same people who play toy soldier games and like throwing around playground insults. Pitifully easy games are preferred for the hardcore gamer with the only real requirement being that they are there and can put the hours in. Being defeated isn't hardcore but commitment is. Online games and games with achievements are preferred so others can see them being hardcore.
Agreed. The term is for the most part used to validate pathetic lifestyles.

Fixed that for you =P

Good move. I knew something was wrong with that definition. :p

Why is it that the term "hardcore" is almost always directed towards the FPS genre? The definition that has been established can easily be validated for every aspect of gaming, but it seems like the FPS pack of wolves always get the biggest chunk of meat. What gives?

It's just a phase. Who knows? Maybe, six years from now TPS will get the bigger slice of the yummy pie. That is unless a good FPS comes out.

Why of course you can! I'm easily distracted by loud noises and shiny things.

And of course it's always good to see a relatively small number of people ruining things for everyone else ._.

If only we could all get along...

Hey, you joke, but TBS gamers are some of the hardest core of the hard core. Those games are hard and, more importantly, frikkin' complicated.

Well if somebody happens to be one of the big names in the starcraft or warcraft3 scene and says he's hardcore, you acknowledge he's hardcore.

It's hard to prove you're hardcore unless you're either well known or you play a hardcore game against someone.

A regular core gamer just shows through his general knowledge of gaming.

Like someone else here said, hardcore is something I relate to skill. It doesn't have to do with how much time you spend on the chair. One can go on for hours trying to get 'Never Say Die' on DMC4 and do nothing. Can a whiny 12 year old kid from Wales beat Zico in Wipeout HD? Or fare better in TDM on MW2 just cause he put more hours in the game?

No. Being hardcore comes with experience and it doesn't have to do with stealing time from other things to do for me. I get good with time and try to know my limits. This way, I know when I have outdone myself.

Yeah, but I would rank them above any of the previously mentioned hardcore gamers. I would put them in an elite class or something. Maybe ludicrous speed gamer. :p

Hardcore gaming is a state of mind that segregates people who like playing games like Wii Sports from people who like playing "games" like Call of Duty: Black Ops.

"Hardcore" doesn't really mean anything. There are people who will dedicate 7-10 hours per day playing video games and suck at them, players who absolutely destroy at SCII during the 3 games they play per week, business accountants who repeat levels in their spare time to polish their reticule movment. And of course obsessive fanboys, high-pitched Xbox LIVE champs, etc. You want to call these people "hardcore"? Fine.

There are gamers that think a game rewards certain skills, minimizes the randomness of results in relation to playing expertise, and requires effort to get better. They frequently talk about meta-aspects, multitasking, etc. Typically these people play multiplayer games since they require more of the above to be constantly successful due to the unpredictable behavior of other players. I count myself as part of this community.
