What is it with the British accent?

I dunno. I've always found English accents to be very charming and sexy.

No real reason as to why. Same with any sexual preference, fetish or attraction. Can any of it really be explained?

Well, you don't have to be British accent if you're British.

Someone in my form at college is an American citizen but has a strong English accent.
He is technically American.

Being a citizen of a country doesnt mean anything... anyone can be a citizen. If he was British (which I firmly maintain that he is not.) he would have talked about his accent and/or about the stereotypical British accent... NOT saying the equivalent of "Wrong! This accent is better.".

He didnt talk about his accent, he didnt talk about his view of the stereotypical British accent... BOTH things important to the thread if you actually are British and can offer your experience in the topic at hand.

Hahahahaha, no. Speaking as an Australian, we don't idolize the stereotype accent. I can say that the broad Australian accent is quite possibly worse then southern drawl and on par with cockney. He could still be British.

I am not saying he is Australian... just not British. And this isnt the only proof (his complete lack of any response even though I quite clearly called him out on it is an added bonus and lack of action is as good as an admission of guilt.).

'British' accent? That's like saying European accent. Britain is 4 countries which (at least say they) hate each other.

Posh Scottish (Edinburgh) to me is a typical british accent!

I've noticed that when it comes to playing online that I usually get one of two responses from Americans in regards to my accent (from the South East of England):

1- 'Woah man! Your voice is AWESOME!!! Are you like from England or something? Say something else! Say something else!'

2- 'The fuck? What's with your faggy ass accent boy? You some kind of queer/pussy or something? Fuckin' English, we oughta nuke your country to fuck and back! Fuckin' faggots. What did ya say? Can't understand ya, speak English!'

It gets somewhat jarring sometimes.

According to my lovely girlfriend (who is Canadaian) my voice is 'cute', most of the time the people online who compliment my accent turn out to be Canadian and most who wish to nuke the British Isles turn out to be from the Southern U.S.

It is official, I like Canada.

It always annoys me that people assume there's a 'British' accent as such (this isn't a dig at you, OP) because that always seems to equate to a posh English accent. It's like, Scotland? Lol, what's that? And don't even get me started on poor Wales..

Personally, English accents can actually appeal to me because to me they're still 'foreign' and interesting to me though I have a far softer spot for Irish ones, they're just so lovely. The only problem I have with different accents is the change in regional slang. Half the time I've had people in shock over something I've said that in my area you wouldn't bat an eyelid over, purely because elsewhere it carries an entirely different meaning.

Basically this, saying somebody has a "British" accent because they are posh and from southern England is like saying somebody with a thick New York accent has an "American" accent. Silly.

Most British accents in my mind sounds like some stuck up snot snob teen throwing a fit tantrum.
But there are some exceptions, dialects farther to the north, closer to Scotland, they sound bit better..

Considering just how many different accents there are in Britain, this question is relatively meaningless, except to raise the question of what recording examples of all known accents from Britain and digitally collating them into one voice would sound like.

I'm not sure what it is either, an English accent just seems to be well received by quite a few other cultures.

First, it is new an interesting - always a plus.

More importantly, there is a sense that the British way of saying something is the proper way of saying it. Anything said in such an accent tends to gain a degree of gravitas that actual content of the discussion might not merit.

But my swedish friend on skype and people from different countries I speak to are like "OMG ENGLISH ACCENT" and just talk about it too much x_x

Personally, I like david tennants accent and stephen fry`s accent, but personally I prefer accents from Australia, Jamaica and Ireland to be more fun to listen to.

People judge personality traits, justly or unjustly, based on how people speak. It's a subconscious thing. So, I guess something about the London accent sounds softer, or warmer than the American accents she might be used to, or at the very least it's telling her, "the way this guy speaks leads me to believe he has qualities I find attractive," maybe because it's associated with a positive stereotype of the pommies. I don't know, but that us how I have always interpreted the accent = sexy thing.

British Accents are hands down my favourite in the world.

I love listening to their accent, Primeval did it for me! Now there does seem to be a fair bit of love for the Austrailian accent which I half understand.

We just sound tip top, what can I say?

It does get a little annoying, when you have - your girlfriends sisters friends - 13 year old girls going "awwww how cute is his accent!"

OT: Can we just clear this up for the people who will insist on saying that a British accent could be any one of thousands (like every other country, I might add):

Most of the time, they're talking about an English accent without any strong distinction to the region of the country. Not everyone's got a regional accent thicker than Katie Price.
