Love is nothing more than a survival instinct embedded deep within our genetic coding. Our brains are programmed to make us feel good about it when we find potential mates, and this in turn leads us to seek them out. The ultimate goal of love is to mate, to reproduce and make sure our race does not die out.
No, the ultimate goal of love is to make us feel good--to reproduce is the side effect. That's how most of evolution/natural selection works--the behavior isn't of itself for survival, it just has a side effect conducive to survival:

http://www.pbs.org/howartmadetheworld/episodes/human/ramachandran/

We as a race have become obsessed with the side effects of love, rather than its ultimate purpose...The concept of love separated from physical reproduction has become so engraved in the collective human psyche that to oppose it, is social taboo.
Can't just look to nature as some sort of authority for what is and is not an 'ultimate purpose:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalistic_fallacy

People who chase after love are no better than junkies craving a high.
Or people ruminating on the question "What is Love?": all three groups are identical in the sense that they are all in search of a certain state of brain chemistry.

There is no longer any need to recreate, we have complete dominance over our planet, and almost complete certainty of survival. The only reason people seek out love now is to experience the rush of chemicals released into your bloodstream when you find a potential mate.
Isn't that why we do anything, from pick our nose to paint the Sistine Chapel's ceiling--to experience a certain state of brain chemistry?

Now, i wrote this a while ago as a thought exercise in arguing points i don't necessarily believe in. I dont agree with everything i wrote up there, but i dont really disagree with it either. So let see some opinions on what you think love might be? it can be something that you believe in, or like me you try to argue a point that u might not support.
Hope all that was thought provoking.

uhm...ouch? way to completely demolish my argument there lol. Anyway yeah i know its a flawed perspective, but that was half the fun of it :p

love is a girl that calls you 8 times a day, can beat you at smash bros. brawl, loves to raid with you in WoW, wants to buy you cool clothes, throws more sex at you than you know what to do with, will ride X2 and Tatsu multiple times, has a skinny body with just the right amount of bust, and massages you whenever you want. That is my gf and the only problem i have is that she always compares her 102 lb. body to her younger 90 lb. sisters body.

There won't be a need to recreate, but people would still do it.

On what I think love is, true love as in a love for a partner is that closeness with another human being, a kindred spirit, soulmate whatever you want to call it; it might be caused by a series of chemical reactions and bodily functions but hey so is breathing and yet its a need for us to exist, a part of a human nature. Love is obsession, it is a high, people in love are junkies not being able to get enough of each other, it is a magical feeling that you can't get over to put it in one word, wondeful.

Sure you can read into that and point out that its caused by chemical reactions and psychological conditioning, but then again so is everything else in life. Why do we strive to do well in life? or not do to well in life? why are some people content with what they have and others always trying to go one step further. All of these can be explained by chemical reactions or psychological explainations, but it doesn't stop it from being a brilliant thing.

You can look at life and thing is this all there is? Just humans reacting to each others chemical behaviours and regard it all as pointless? Or do you embrace it and enjoy the ride o whatever end you believe you will meet.

Enjoy

MaxTheReaper, I wouldn't think love would be the opposite of hate. They are very similar in that they both devote an intense amount of emotion towards one person. I think the opposite would be apathy, or not caring about them at all.

To answer the topic, love is a logical fallacy according to Max Shulman. He stated in his short story "Love Is A Fallacy" that love can't be described using any form of logic. It breaks all rules because it is unidentifiable. For the sake of my argument I will rename love as "altruism". Altruism is selflessness in place of another being. Altruism doesn't occur in nature very often, and some would argue that it never occurs at all. So for humans, placing another before yourself is love, or altruism. Nobody has the same reasons for why they practice altruism for another person. My qualifications for altruism are different than yours, and in fact, may be different than they were for myself five years ago. So long story short, love (altruism) is an unpredictable biological miracle.

well written and true wall of text, some few pointers; try slicing the wall up so its easier on the eye and wont make the weak minds run in fear as they are the ones who idealize love to be something more than what it is, and maybe a different title, reading your post i kept hearing haddaway in my mind.

Ignorance, all over it burns... I take it most of you have never experienced the emotion that is understated as love? Particularly those calling it down. Yes it hurts, but god yes is it the best thing you will ever fell when you are with that person of whom is the object of you affection. If you think you have experienced love and see it as a bad thing, then it wasn't love. It was simply a great liking or maybe lust. Love and lust are NOT interchangeable. Love is when you feel sick when you aren't with that person as I feel now, because she has gone ice skating and I am otherwise indisposed. When such minor things like weather, illness and fatigue would never stop you. Love is very real, a series of chemical reactions in the brain? So is everything, so therefore it is no less real than the world you see around you. Love is not a one night stand, one is not dating, love is so so much more. A thing that cannot be expressed in any amount of words even it's own. Love is an understatement of it's self. Even song & poetry cannot give that emotion. Much less cold words on an internet forum even despite the way I talk about love being called poetic by a few (not that I see it, just the way I think) as such, love is fact. Those who say otherwise are scared of such emotion, scared of the pain, and as a defence try to convince themselves it isn't real. Sorry to say but it is. And hiding away that wont get you anywhere.

Also love is no about pro-creation, that is lust, which in romantic relationships is hand in hand. Any of you who wish to challenge this fact feel free to dispute it for whatever reason.

According to Douglas Adams, it's a terrible disease of the mind, and I feel the same way. Unconditional love is pure ignorance and denial at it's best.

Love is caring more about other people's happiness than your own, it's being prepared to do what is best for someone else, even if it tears your own heart to shreds. It's about helping, and listening, and showing kindness. It's about sticking by someone who needs you, even if they push you away, and about walking away when you have to, even though you can't stand to go.
