What is so great about Anime?

Sir, I completely agree with your statement but since he is a film student wouldn't it make since for him to be able to tell weither or not a type of film is structurely good?

Not if he believes that he can judge (for example) a 600+ anime from a handful of episodes, let alone an entire medium.
To put the above in to perspective it's as though he watched twelve seconds of Gran Torino (bad example I know but just roll with it) and decided that all films everywhere were just old men sitting on their prcch drinking beer and talking to their dogs, or eight seconds of Trasformors and claiming all films were just robots pissing on people.

Also you can argue what makes a film structurally good till you're blue in the face but that won't change the fact that art, any art is subjective, people like different writing tropes, some people have no sense of humor, others hate sad endings, others still love the concept of a regenerating preist with blessed swords dueling an imortal vampire that duel weilds massive hand guns while wearing a giant red fedora, structure can't account for taste.

Something like Ghost in the Shell or Monster would be better choices.
But this is all my Opinion, nothing more.

To me, anime has limitless potential. It can be themed and targeted for any audience for the most part and since it's animated, the only real limit seems to be ones imagination.

I like this alternate universe you live in where animation isn't expensive and budgets are never a problem.

Animators are not really that high paid, so in some cases it might be cheaper than live action films.

A lot of anime has the budget advantage of using fewer unique frames pr second than a lot of other films, so they can reduce the amount of pictures they have to make to about a third.

Add to that that animation can and is partly beeing outsourced to countries with lower wages, and studios often use low or unpaid interns for in-between drawings.
I'd think it's hard to outsource the actors and everyone else on the set of live action films.

May I say something. Anime is one of the few forms of medium that i am actually ashamed that i love. Anyone who doesn't watch anime only see it as school girls and monsters. Whats wrong with that. That is why i love it. It usually have absurd stories and larger than life situations. It usually doesn't make sense for the most part. The visuals are bright and flashy and the story and characters are retarded. I love it. It gives out a sense of absurdity that the west would not even brush up on. I think the west kind of takes itself too seriously with its medium. Maybe sometimes I want a story about a high school boy who is getting lusted by 18 other girls. Or a girl that fights crime with a magic panda. Anime reaches out to the "retarded idea spectrum" of our thoughts. The most perverted, fantastical, and weird ideas come from anime. Still though, it is not to say that it is just that. I has many anime with great story (in my opinion) and lessons such as Mysterious Girlfriend X (innocence) Great Teacher Onidzuka (Boldness) and many more. Like any other medium, it has its crap, its good, and its weird. Don't judge anime in general by 2 shows, and don't judge it by its fans. If you really are interested, look it up. If you enjoy it (no matter how stupid) it shouldn't come as such of a confusion

I see many others have filled you in on the generals, so I will simply state my personal reasons. The "good" animes that I have enjoyed have all:
- had stories equal to and in many cases MUCH better than that produced by the Hollywood movie/TV mill
-been based on interesting concepts and in interesting settings
- stretched the range of expressiveness in a way I find engaging and fun to watch
- had seriously engaging characters which underwent real development

Beyond all of those, one major reason that I will always support anime is because of its origin. Most anime comes from manga, which originates in the mind and heart of a single individual or small group of individuals acting in concert. They create the characters, write the story, do the original illustrations and development, and ask for the opinions of their friends, family and others known to them to see if they've done something appealing. Then they bring their work to a publishing house and present it for their review. If the publishing house approves, they support the authors with the time and collaboration of their professional artists and developers until they have a product worthy of general publishing. If the product is successful enough, it can be made into an anime.

In short - manga is an industry where an individual or group of individuals can have a dream, put in the work to make their dream at least a potential reality, and go openly before existing publishers to find the support they need to be successful. And this success can take off, bringing their work into a medium that can be viewed worldwide.

To me, there's nothing more American than that way of working. And the way our own media industry works sucks ass by comparison. I support anime and manga in the hope that the anime industry will force our own industry to take the sticks out of their @sses, trash the fear, uncertainty and doubt spread by their lawyers, break the shackles on them and start supporting independent artists in the same way the manga industry does.

Oh by the way, if you want a short anime that does have the type of merits you were looking for, please feel free to view Black Blood Brothers - you can find it legally on Funimation's video site. For a modern vampire show made for young audiences that ran out of budget before they could even finish the ending fight scenes, it has some serious oomph in characters, story, background, originality, and just plain entertainment (the villainess in particular is terrific). I could recommend other, more popular and polished animes, but most would have one or two outstanding qualities. Despite its age group and flaws, this particular show has that "magic mix" that makes it a good example of why anime can be worth watching.

well it would be like walking into a soap opera halfway through the plot, because you most likely did watch episodes from the middle of the series. Also, just because these animes are the most popular ( i like Code Geass, but hate naruto) doesn't mean that ALL anime is like that, it be like watching Transformers and declaring all movies to be terrible.

I actually do think EL is somewhat of a good starter series.

What I see in it is what I would see in a game. A form of entertainment. Often they have very... different stories. This can be both good and bad. Overall, it's an interesting medium, with interesting concepts. It's not different than say... a live action television show like House. The only difference is that it's animated and it takes a lot more liberties with what it does.
Also:
Naruto: Big, steaming pile of overrated shit.
Guren Laggan and Geass: Meant to be over the top.
You hung out with the wrong people and watched the wrong things. Had you watched something good like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Baccano!, Rourouni Kenshin (Aka: Samurai X), Bakemonogatari, Darker than Black or Spice and Wolf, then your opinion would likely be very different.

I love that they just blew half their animation budget on him opening up a goddamn notebook and getting ready to write. Seriously. He opens that book with the same amount of forcefulness and gravitas that Chow Yun Fat uses to kick down doors.

First of all, hats of to you for being the most stereotypical Texan in the world. Truely your gf must go by Annie at home and Mrs.Oakly at church. Now, I do sugest that you watch Spirited Away. The plot is very Japanese so expect a more authentic experiance than the ones you got from the first two animes you watched. Second, you must make a killing from all that oil spuing out you backyard. I doubt you need the Deathnote to kill those who fell out of favor from you (well, exept mabey Putin).
