I've tried a few assault rifles during my short stay in the military, but I personally found the G36K as the best for my preference. It didn't weigh much, it wasn't very big and it had relatively good accuracy, not to mention sights I could actually see through well. It was also fairly robust and reliable. Never had a problem with it.

Of course, I was supposed to be a combat engineer with a machine gun, so it didn't really matter much anyway.

How many of the AK fanboys here has ever fired one...? How many here has fired any assault rifle whatsoever? With all the experts here one could believe that the escapist community is the most battle-hardened group in the world.

Personally I have only ever fired one assault rifle, the G3. It's accurate and mine has never ever jammed under any conditions. It also uses the large 7.62 calibre, although that's not necessarily an advantage.
It's a good rifle, I fired 900 shots when I tested it in Germany. Heavy and a bit clumsy, but as an all rounder, it's excellent.

AK-47 is pretty reliable, but has it flaws. I'd say M4 or AR-15 and any H&K gun pretty much for effectiveness, but just be careful and take good care of them.

nobody here has ever shot a gun before, let alone an assault rifle... and even if so you are a minority.

there are many different models and makes of an "ak-47" that goes for the "m-16" as well

you obviously base these choices off what you have read or seen on tv.

It depends on the situation. If I were fighting in mainland Europe across the steppe of Russia, I'd be in a covered shooting position blowing chest cavities open at 800 yards with the DMR variant of the m14.

If I were fighting house to house in Mogadishu, I'd take either an m4 carbine, of the HK416. I'd be clearing rooms with the fully automatic function(responsible, not spray and pray) then set up a shooting position on a roof and shoot you in the face peeking over a wall at 400 yards.

If I were a rebel with no formal training or education I'd take an AK 74 or an AKM. The AK 47 hasn't been relevant since about '47. The only thing used are its variants.

Depends on what kind of environment you are going to be fighting in. Plains? Woods? Dense forests? Desert?

Do you have field support? How long will you need to be expected to use it? Is the enemy likely going to wear body armour?

All these affect. There is no one gun for all situations.

Personally I'd go for an AK-47 derivative, thinking of the RK-95. Used by Finnish Defense Forces, it has the base AK-47 structure but not made of wood or plastics. Has a folding stock for urban combat, rails for NW-scope and can use rifle-grenades.

A bit on the heavier side in comparison to many smaller caliber assault rifles, but that is to be expected of a rifle based on the 7.62 round. Kickback is also a bit of a b***h, making the automatic mode of the weapon hit mostly air beyond point-blank range. While prone the accuracy is greatly improved, but not up to LMG/MG standards. Ammo does become an issue, as with heavier ammo than many other assault rifles, ammo conservation is somewhat of a problem in prolonged firefights. Or alternatively adds to the overall weigh. But RK-95 is meant primarily for single-fire mode, there is no getting around that.

It has the ruggedness and easy maintainability of the AK. The round is enough to penetrate most body armour and one shot does kill despite not having the speed of a 5.56mm or other smaller rounds. Effective killing range with iron sight is up to 400m.

The round also plainly ignores brick walls and small trees, keeping it's course fairly close to original trajectory after such an impact, quite unlike the 5.56mm.

A point in favour of most AK-derivatives is the easy with which it can be trained. You could teach all essentials, including basic maintenance and field-stripping, in four hours to your average 12 year old. Quite unlike many other rifles, including the M-16. I've done field-stripping on the RK-95 and then re-assembling it straight afterwards in under 30 seconds from redy to fire, to field-stripped to re-assembled to ready to fire. 30 seconds. It's just that simple. And that gives the reliability, the only moving parts are the gas-piston assembly and the trigger.

So, has punching power, highly reliable, accurate, easy to maintain and some modularity. If I was told I was going to a place I knew nothing about and told to prepare for combat, I'd take this.

The fact that I'm trained with it has nothing to do with me choosing it, nosirree :)

Normal infantry round penetration test for an identical rifle. Materials are: 20cm of wood (actual penetration capability while retaining lethal momentum is over 50cm), 13cm brick (standard house wall brick), 29cm concrete block (commonly used for building foundations), 8mm steel plate and lastly, the standard sandbag (23cm).

Remember, no AP-bullets, just plain standard infantry rounds.

EDIT: Here is a guy doing the field stripping and reassembling in 19 seconds flat. A bit messy with the parts, but done properly from start to finish. If you missed the stripping part, don't worry because it was fast, he was done with it in less than 4 seconds.

ive always heard the debate between the AK-47 vs the M-16A2, but a freind of mine recently brought up the fact that he thinks the G-36 is the best assault rifle ever made. this made me think that the M-16 and the AK-47 arent the only ones on the market and maybe not the best. so i ask you all, if you had to go into battle what assault rifle would you want?

(im not adding a poll because there are so many to choose from)
I video game terms I'd prefer an M16 as it has less recoil and is just as - if not more - accurate than the AK.

If I had to go "into battle" like right now I'd choose an AK47 because I have zero actual military training and AK47 is more suited to less trained individuals.

If I had to join the armed forces and was trained with a rifle I'd prefer an M16 type rifle.

But out of all the assault rifle's I'd probably prefer the Steyr AUG assault rifle. Bullpup like the SA80 yet much lighter and more reliable, it is short enough to use it like a submachine gun in close combat, yet the round is powerful and accurate enough to engage the enemy at long range.

I would go with the newest version of the AK,the ak-108. it's a lot more effective than the old ak,and it still has that russian, soviet touch that I love

Since it is likely OP will never fire any of those weapons in his life, it doesn't really make a difference.

Do bullets come out the end when you pull the trigger? Yes? And bullets, they come out fast enough to kill a person? Yes?

Then why does it matter beyond that?

Most (and remember im saying most..) People here are basing this whole thing on the games they've played using these weapons or movies they have seen. Most people here don't know sh** about the weapon they pick! They just get hard on's when ever they see that weapon in real life cause their like, "I have one of them on Call of Duty and i kill Noobs all day! i rock so does that weapon!" Another point is perspective I mean you ask a Marine or Navy Seal I'm guessing their going to say M16 or M4 cause that's what their trained with. I'm not bashing the post its a good question just people who think they know all about weapons cause they have an Air Soft one.

I have no real knowledge into guns, so I'm going to go of my knowledge of the guns in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. I therefore go for the FN 2000, that gun was kickass.

I would take an Ak 74 just to be different. Only terrorists use 47's these days

In all seriousness though I would take an SA80 A2, since the the only assault rilfe I am trained to use, shoot and clean effectively.
It is also one of the best assault rifles anyway, now that Hekler and Koch have played with it.

I would have to say the best is a contest between the Tavor, the FN SCAR, or the HK 416. That last one still works fine even if thrown in a pond.

Ive always had a fondness of the IMI Galil for its power and (relative) accuracy. Its also a good likeness of the ak-47 im many many ways.
