Best RGP game is undoubtedly Diablo 2 Lord of Destruction.

I have spend sooooo many hours on that game. I am already crossing my fingers for a sequel.

I love the Zelda games too, but forgot they were RPGs too. Ocarina is the all time favourite.

Besides the dialogue-heavy turn-of-the century stuff, also Chronotrigger and Might and magic III-V

"RPG stands for role playing game, and the way Half Life 2 was written, and scripted made me feel like I was Gordon Freeman. I stepped into his role more fully than I have stepped into the role of any other game character."

I felt more like a really popular zombie, annoyed that everyone wants to suck up to me, and confused as to why my arms go limp when I try to aim at them. Nothing can make a zombie feel more useless than that. : (

As for whether RPG stands for role-playing game... I'm hesitant to sign that, because every-fuckin'-thing is an rpg, or has "rpg-elements" nowadays. Yeah, having an inventory sure has a lot to do with role-playing ~~

The elder scrolls, Kotor and Torment are RPGs while Final Fantasy are JRPGs, an acronym that in reality means nothing (since it doesn't really contain any role-playing elements).

As for the best RPG ever, I'd want to say Torment, because that's the game with the best story I can think of, but I probably had more fun playing The Elder Scroll games, even if things went downhill a bit with Oblivion. If we include games like JRPGs and the like... uh... Terranigma maybe? Final Fantasy 8? Those were nice : /

It has the learning curve of a wall, but one you find out what you're doing, it really is beautiful. Laying waste to a small town because they tell you to kill a bunch of scorpions. What? I was a friend to the animals!
Yeah, I'm sure I could handle it a little bit better now. At the time, my full RPG experience was games like Chrono Trigger, which can be called many things, but challenging isn't one of them.

It's really a shame that most of the great games are in the past. On the other hand, it gives a rich treasure trove of things to search for. I just wish companies that weren't going to produce a game anymore would give it up to the public (as has been done with FS2).

First Post in the Forum yay...well my best RPGs, lets see

Terranigma <-The Best Storyline ever, enjoy playing it from time to time still
Final Fantasy VII <-The Story is nice, Plot-Twists were nice..but what i really love is beating the Weapons, ya know those oversized kick-ass Robotthingys.
Fallout 1 and 2 <-Dont need much Reason, everyone playing either knows why its good
Kotor 1 and 2 <-First was obviously better than the second but i still enjoyed playing both, though the endings were rather annoying all in all, having only 2 (though you could also finish kotor1 with having neutral alignment giving some new text, still same "good" ending though.)
Secret of Evermore <-Yes, it was a Cheap Ass Copy of Secret of Mana but it was still fun to play, at least once in a while.
Breath of Fire 3 <-Best Breath of Fire in my Opinion, good story, interesting boss fights, nice graphics (Yes i loved the Anime-Look, sue me)
Zelda - A Link to the Past <-Best Zelda Game ever till today, closely followed by Ocarina of Time and Majoras Mask (Havent played any other Zelda Game ;p)

And several others i have played in the Past, which i cant remember being that good however, for different reasons.

My favorite RPG of all time is, easily, Star Ocean: The Second Story for play on the PS1. I know that the graphics aren't exactly stellar, but to be quite frank the story is enough, more than enough....100x's more than enough to excuse that. It's funny, quirky, serious, diverse, adventerous and romantic as well. Private Actions allow you to meet your party members and develop relationships with them, giving you close to 87 different endings when all is said and done. Voice overs during combat and memorable, living characters. Especially Claude C. Kenni, Rena Lanford and Ashton Anchors :D If you have the disposable income to buy it from Ebay, I would heartily suggest doing so. It's a rare find. A veritable diamond in the rough.
dude, i totally forgot about star ocean! ok i never played the first one for ps(never had one) but till the end of time was awesome. a lot of my friends didn't like it, but i loved the idea. another great plot twist where i never saw it coming. the ending was really cool and out there too.

for the most part i can stand jrpg's but i like westerns better. but i think star ocean2 really managed to combine the two worlds seemlessly. the arena in that game was awesome too, the first time i played through it i skipped it because i just wanted to get through the game, but i realized that "damnit i cant beat the final boss" then i went through it again, finished the arena and managed to kill him.

rogue galaxy is another thing along those lines too. the story wasn't as cool as star ocean, but i liked all the big flashy combos. the one thing i didn't like was how long the final boss battle was. "wait, you mean im not done YET!?" the ending was dumb in my opinion though.

i noticed a few people here mentioned chrono trigger. while i have never played that game(i might have i went through sn games like m&m's back in the day), i did play a mod of morrowind that brought in the story, easily my favorite morrowind mod.

and one last thing, im suprised at how many responses i got to this thread, been at school all day so i didnt have time to check till now DAMN

ChronoTrigger on the SNES...runners up would be Final Fantasy VII, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360).

Morrowind. first decent RPG I ever played. Since then, Ive also liked NWN, but I play table-top D&D as well, so make of that what you will. I like Deekin. Oblivion...I havent sat down and seriously played it yet, since I dont own the hardware, but I felt kind of clumsy and distant from it. probably just unfamiliarity with the controls.

I have the funny feeling that Mass Effect might be added to this list of favorite RPGs when it comes out for PC. I like Sheer, Head-crushing Depth.

I have Diablo. I've tried really really hard to play it but it's just sooo (I don't want to say crap so I won't say anything at all). I haven't gotten past the church and it just seems boring and it feels hard to control.

maybe because it's in the other thread with the same name? It was bigger than this one but now it's taking over (and the other is on the 3/4th page?)

-CLICHE ALERT!!@_@!!-

I still have to say that Final Fantasy 7 is still my favorite. Over a decade since I first played it, and it still has me playing it.

Disagea, Oblivion, Fire Emblem, and the Oddworld series (Not sure if it's considered an RPG or an Action game, but either way) rank up there as well :)
Jesus Christ I thought you were me for second. And I was wondering if I was joking about FFVII being my favourite game. Beccause there'd be no way I wasn't.
