I'm a big fan of the metal gear solid series. Forced to pick one, I'd say the third is a contender for best singleplayer game.

I am ninjaing a thousand people with this, but Morrowind and Oblivion. And soon enough Skyrim!
DAMN IT

I was going to be all cool and original and say Oblivion because I've put a hundred or two (or 3) hours into it and that summoning was the most fantastic skill I've ever seen in a game!

Agh! I'm a conformist now!
Haha. You kind of sounded like a hipster though.

I'm pretty sure mine would be Fallout 3, as I have about 85 hours on my play-through and still have not been to every location, gotten every unique weapon, every bobble-head so technically (from a rabid completionist's standpoint) I have not truly beaten it.
Mine too.

I've over 400 hours on it, have done every quest, found every location, weapon and skillbook and started all over again - three times.

For me, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, still my favorite game. As for the next games, alot of them are tied, but I really loved New Vegas. I don't care about the bugginess of it, it just didn't piss me off with it's story like 3 did (still really liked 3, but only when I went out of my way to avoid the story).

And KOTOR I/II of course. Both of them have good and bad things about them, but they are amazing games.

Probably a J/WRPG.

Though, some FPS have some pretty good stuff...like System Shock 2 and TimeSplitters 3.

I don't know, I've always been a huge Fallout fan, but to me New Vegas was a disgrace. Nearly everything it had in it's favor could be gotten and improved on with mods for the PC version of Fallout 3, also with less glitches.
Yes, New Vegas started off quite buggy, but most of it was fixed pretty fast.

Mods should be an extension on the game or a form of customization for the game. A game should already be great without the mods. That's why Oblivion failed. It needed mods to work. Fallout 3 (and NV) didn't need any mods to work. Though the mods did make it an even better game.

A few things I can remember from Fallout 3 compared to New Vegas...

New Vegas had better gameplay balancing (although it still has issues).

Fallout 3 had one main quest with a few side quests. There wasn't much of a relation between the quests, the NPC's or the world. In New Vegas the story, quests and NPC's were better integrated into the world and there was more of it.

New Vegas made better use of factions and integrated those in the world.

New Vegas had a more interesting array of locations.

In the end, the improvements weren't huge. But it were still improvements though, IMO.

EDIT: the console version is so inferior here without the mods.

Skies of Arcadia, unforgettable characters, airship battles, and really flashy super moves in normal battles, you can smack your enemies with a moon!

Maybe if the game didn't have a million and one bugs that shouldn't exist. I hate how bethesda (and whoever the hell they were working with for NV) gets away with releasing a clearly unfinished product and then they don't bother putting the effort to fix any problem with the game. In FactI was playing New Vegas the other day and Ed-E went into a wall in vault 22. So I said screw it and left him there because I only wanted his perk and didnt have a recent save where I knew whwere he was. Then after purchasing the 'Honest Hearts' DLC I find out that I cannot do it because it still says I have Ed-E as a companion and what is the only way to fix this problem you might ask? By purchasing the 'Dead Money' DLC which provides a ONE TIME companion reset. Really?
Yes, the game was too bugged at the start.

Anyhow, are you playing the PC version of Fallout? If so you can use the command line to add or remove companions. I can't recall the exact link, but I read it somewhere on the Fallout wiki.

EDIT: the Dead Money DLC is pretty cool. Definitely worth it.

I doubt you can find THE best singleplayer game of all time. I personally think Dwarf Fortress is amazing, nothing will ever beat Deus Ex and Half-Life is badass. Fallout and Homeworld are way up there too because of atmosphere, audiovisual style and story decisions. I think Company of Heroes and Dawn of War are pretty damn enjoyable RTS games but Age of Empires could still be more fun somehow.
You have to factor in personal experience, nostalgia and emotional attachement (maybe you got this game for christmas from your father before he passed away unexpectedly...morbid thinking on my end but reasonable I believe)

So I would give you the clichè answer that there is no single best game of all time. Only games that are amazing and close to perfection, and we should be happy that there is no one best answer, but a lot of 99% right answers.

The game that whenever you mention it, someone goes and reinstalls it.

Deus Ex.

I can't just pick one. There are many genres to like and each one has a good example to offer.
So here are my favourites:
RPG - Neverwinter Nights (Note: I haven't played Baltur's Gate II, I)
FPS - Urban Chaos
Horror - Project Zero 2
Stealth - Desperados: Wanted dead or alive
Racing - NFS: Underground 2
Simulators:
Flight Simulator X
Train Simulator 2
Sim City 4 (Deluxe)
Assassination - Hitman: Blood Money (Sorry it's just that Assassin's Creed II just doesn't cut it. Great mechanics, yet linear missions. Sandbox exists only as an in between activity. But still it's worth the 22EUR on psn! SWEET!)

Of to play bfbc2 now... ;)

I have never actually played that
I would recommend it. It's a pretty solid shooter and made bullet time in games famous. Good story too. Although it can be kind of a ***** to play a lot of the time, it is cheap enough that everyone should have it. As for me, either FF VII or VIII, or Steambot Chronicles.

(There are some spoilers in here, though I'd be inclined to believe that everyone who wants to play Mass Effect one or two already have)

I know this is probably a very unpopular choice, but for me, Mass Effect was the best single-player game of all time. I'm really big on backstory and characters, and Mass Effect had some of the most likeable characters and completely rich backstories I've ever experienced. It also had a great story, and an intense ending, and choices with real, resonating consequences. I mean, depending on your decisions throughout the game, a crew member can be killed, the Council can die, you can exterminate a race, you can have thousands of Alliance members killed, you can wipe out a colony, all sorts of choices that feel as though you're actually playing an important role in the galaxy.

Not to mention that I still believe that Saren is one of the greatest villains ever created. He's powerful, he's a traitor, he's a murderer, he's playing for the wrong side, and yet I was sympathising with him by the end of the game. He's tragic to a fault, and truly believes that he's doing what's best for the galaxy.

I know the gameplay isn't perfect, and the inventory can become very quickly cluttered, but as far as my opinion goes, Mass Effect is the best.
I still despise Bioware for some of the changes they made to the second one. And from what I've heard, the third one will be even worse.

No I am playing on the xbox version. I shouldn't have to go buy a specific version of a product meant for multiple platforms simply to avoid gamebreaking issues the developer is either to lazy or to greedy to fix.

I'd have to say that my top single-player game would have to be Chrono Trigger; it's very well written, does time travel extremely well, and it's interesting enough to make me want to keep going back to play it over and over again.
This.

Chrono Trigger is a game I still frequently cite as the greatest game ever made.
