I am ninjaing a thousand people with this, but Morrowind and Oblivion. And soon enough Skyrim!
Holy crap... someone who appreciates the merits of both Morrowind and Oblivion, without bashing one or the other. I thought I was the last.

But yes, I'm gonna do a bit of a cop-out and say the TES series, mainly Oblivion and Morrowind. Skyrim, at this rate, will probably (hopefully) beat them both.

There is a lot I could name, but off the top of my head.

Mass Effect 1 & 2
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Red Dead Redemption
Any of the Metal Gear Solid games.

And many more.

Probably Fallout 3, don't know if it'll wear off (I doubt it), but The Witcher 2 is right now being my holy grail.

For me its a tie between...

Oblivion...
Daggerfall....
Dwarf fortress....
Morrowind...
Fallout 1-3...
Fallout New Vegas...

And honestly... I can't pick.

Civilisation 3, Age of Empires 2 or any Total Wars, I've logged on months of gameplay with these games. They're so engaging and cater to my one more turn mentality.

Wow ... this is a tough one. I'd have to say Fallout 3. It's not necessarily the best game ever, but in terms of a solitary experience, there's nothing like it. The landscape stretching out for miles, very little life that isn't trying to kill you, the name 'the lone wanderer': everything about it creates this atmosphere of loneliness, and yet, you never feel more alive.

the most fun game? Max payne 1 with matrix and kung-fu mod. otherwise we have mass effect 1-2, and COD WAW (the single best COD game storyline/singleplayer campaign ever)

The Legend of Zelda, Assassin's Creed, Portal, Mass Effect, Red Dead: Redemption, L.A. Noire

Notes: These are my favourite right now, not saying they're the best. List subject to change on a whim, or sudden memory. List not necessarily in any order. And the first four are the series, not just the games; I'm not sure if that's allowed, but it's like I always say, "Shut the hell up."

Well, since Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Half-Life 2 and Portal have no doubt been mentioned a dozen times (all deserving of it) I'm going to say Just Cause 2. It's like living in a world built entirely out of over-the-top 80s action films and a very loose idea of Newton's laws of motion.

Once you've tied your car to a jumbo jet and spun around like a lunatic as the physics try and catch up with you, or ramped your bike off a cliff to smash into a water tower and watch it collapse as you drift away on your parachute, or ended a car chase by leaping out of your vehicle and on to your enemies', wiring the roof with C4, then jumping back to your own car and speeding off as the road explodes behind you, you'll find it impossible to put down.

Prince of Persia 2008, probably.

Although I'm sweet on Mass Effect and its not-quite-so-good sequel, Prince of Persia 2008 is the only game with an ending that made me feel something other than 'Phew, what an adventure.' I know everybody hated it; hated the forgiving difficulty, the weaksauce combat system, hated Nolan North's prince, but by the time I finished the game (the first time), I had stopped noticing the flaws because for once I was actually caught up in the story.

So it's not definitive, but that would be my opinion on why it's the best single-player game: people and events I care about.

Or Mass Effect.

Resident Evil 4
Shadow of the Colossus
Metal Gear Solid 3
Metroid Prime
Beyond Good and Evil
Persona 3 and 4

Hell, most of the games I play are single player, I could be listing these for a long time.

Call of Duty 4 was probably the game that I enjoyed the most, but I'm gonna say Oblivion.

It was that one game where I literally was awestruck by how deep it was for me. Up to that day the most advanced game I had played was Zelda on the N64.

Hmmmmmm, I'm thinking either: Fallout 3, Just Cause 2 or Mass Effect 1 or 2 (depends on how much you value good gameplay compared to role playing aspects). Metro 2033, Bioshock, Batman: Arkham Asylum are all very good, but they are quite short and length of a campaign is something I expect to be quite large in a singleplayer only game. Unless it has insane replay value.
