We know that game stories are meant to be brainless pieces of derivative generic brain rotting filler pulpy mess on the same level as bargain bin pornography or children's tv rapefics. But what games do you think prove this wrong, what game is the best written?

Deus Ex is a good contender, but I'd say Mass Effect, if only for the metric ton of codex entries
Codex entries that are surprisingly scientifically accurate, especially considering it's a space opera.

System shock 2, the complex web of motivations and depth of backstories really makes it an interesting experience.
Then again portal is a god damned masterpiece.

I have plenty of positive things to say about Mass Effect, but scientific accuracy certainly isn't one of them.

KOTOR 2 had some pretty good writing all things considered, too bad the rest of the game was such a mixed bag.

I thought Gears 2's storyline was pretty great but that might just be in comparison to Gears 1.

I suppose it depends on the genre of game. A thriller novel doesn't necessarily have to be well developed with back stories to be the best, it has to be gripping (a "page turner") and I found Assassin's Creed 2 to be unvelievably gripping. I struggled to stop playing because I was desperate to know what happened next (including The Truth bit, searched forever for those glyphs).

I also thought the background and setting for Mirror's Edge to be clever but there wasn't really a story to go with it.

For a space opera that is.
I for one like that they manage to stay clear from the "space is cold" myth and actually point out that heat is the main issue in space combaat.

Mass Effect series, Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy X, and Alan Wake.

(Don't want any bashing that's just my personal opinion.)

Thousand Years of Dreams in Lost Odyssey, some of the best parts of the game are there.

Overall, I'd say Final Fantasy VI because it knew when to be comedic and when to be serious, which I wish I could say about Mother 3. Damn I need to play some WRPGs.

I prefer it when most of the technology is unexplained, purely so that you can always believe it *might* not be complete bullshit. I think the codex was best when it detailed the alien culture.

Did you ever play Planescape: Torment? Both games have the same head designer/writer I think.
