Doom and Doom II, and I just realized why not too long ago.
There's no nostalgia, I never played it until about a year ago. I think the reason I love it so much is because of my natural appreciation for beauty. I love bright, pretty things (except My Little Pony, which gave me a flesh eating disease that only triggers when I think about it). Doom is bright, sharp, and fast paced. It's appeal probably comes from how much it stands out. In the midst of a sea of dark, gritty, ugly, SRS BUSINESS FPS games, Doom stands out for being bright, colorful, fast and light hearted.
I could go on about the excellent level design, the perfect use of sound, the lively, unique enemies, or the wonderful soundtrack, but instead I'll leave it at this: Doom is unlike anything else, even to this day.
