Pretty much most of what I wanna put on here has already been said, but I'll do repeats...

Assassin's Creed: The first one was a bit difficult to get into due to the repetitive missions, but I really got into the story. Then two came along and I was sold by the improvements to the gameplay as well as the narrative. Ezio's character arc was good and I never felt bored. Brotherhood continued a bit with Ezio's development into the master of the order as well as giving him a more personal enemy in cesare. Plus, I have never had so much fun with multiplayer. Once I get my PS3 back, I'm gonna go get revelations.

SSX: I don't really have much to say about the series. I started with tricky and played 3 and a bit of on tour. I like the cast of characters (Moby is my guy) and the soundtrack is always good. One of the most relaxing games for me to play to this day. I love just popping in ssx 3 into my gamecube and just riding.

Tekken: I originally didn't pay tekken much mind. I occasionally played tekken 3 when my uncle had it but that was it. Then tekken 4 came out and he got it and I played it. While most series fans don't like it, 4 was what got me into the series, both gameplay and storywise (Tekken is probably the only fighting game where I actually like the story and know about all of the characters motivations and arcs, mortal kombat being second in that regard and DOA thrid). When 5 came out, I had a bit of difficulty adjusting to the changes, but I got over the hump and once it came out for psp...well that pretty much the only psp game I play...then I got 6 and found my character in king and now I'm happily awaiting tag 2.

Gears of war: This I actually owe to a friend who was the one who actually convinced me to check out xbox 1. Once the first game was announced he followed it like crazy. I eventually picked it up to check it out. It was good shooty fun and the multiplayer was (for the most part) spectacular. Then two came out and the multiplayer got better and the story was a bit longer and better. Then 3 upped the multiplayer to some of the best I've ever played and the story had the right amount of balance that I was (for the most part) happy.

But the top one for me has to be Mass Effect. I got the game for Christmas the same year, I got assassin's creed. What is funny is that I originally dismissed it (because I couldn't figure out were to go and I didn't feel right when I played.) Eventually, one summer I had nothing else to really play, so I started playing it again late at night just to give it another chance. I just did a general solider run through so I could run and gun. I also stopped acting like and idiot and actually followed the proper path this time (I was young and stupid). What that evolved to is one of the most productive and yet unproductive weeks of all time as I got into the game and began to play if from 8 at night to 8 or nine in the morning just running around doing side quest and getting to enjoy the narrative and the characters and the universe. I ended up playing it multiple times with different characters and classes to see all the stuff I could do. Needless to say, when to came out I wen in with reckless abandon. I finished the game in a week with my first character with out doing side quest. Then I looked up the side quest and did those. To date mass effect 2 is the only game where I have bought all DLC (save for costume packs for squadmates) I now eagerly await my mass effect 3 N7 edition.

(apologies for the small essay)

Rock Band - A short series, but one of fantastic quality all the way through.

Legend of Zelda - Not every game is a gem, but they are among the most reliable series ever. In order of personal preference:

1) A link to the Past (SNES)
2) Wind Waker (Cube)
3) Zelda 2: Adventures of Link (NES)
4) Ocarina of Time (N64)
5) Twilight Princess (Wii)
6) Minish Cap (DS)

Final Fantasy - Much like Zelda, not every game is a gem. I often don't care for the story either, and yet I love the gaming experience. In order of personal preference:

1) FF 6
2) FF 4
3) FF 12
4) FF 13
5) FF 1
6) FF 10
7) FF 7

Note: Games not listed in the above lists are either ones I've never played (Example FF9, FF 13-2) or simply ones I didn't like (Example: Original Legend of Zelda (NES)).
HOW DARE YOU?!? MINISH CAP IS A GBA GAME!! RABBLE RABBLE

Yea, Zelda's probably top of the list for me too. Mario, Mario RPG, Metroid, Portal, and Banjo-Kazooie are right up there as well.

Then a little further down we have grouped together: Donkey Kong, Kirby, Smash, Kart, Pikmin

As for older ones, well... Homeworld, for one. Dawn of War as well. The X-Wing series. X-Com. Close Combat. And a hell of a lot of others.

Tricky I was really struggling to find a series I have enjoyed every game from but thanks to one of the above posters I have remembered so my vote goes to Soul Calibur ill include Soulblade/edge in there as well simply for kickstarting the series and having the best opening of any game ever.

None of the games in the series will make my top five games ever list but taken as a whole I have probably gotten more enjoyment out of this series than any other. Strange I forgot about it as I am literally playing Soul Calibur V now (after writing this) and am loving the character creation mode (even more than 4) all fighting games should have this mode from now on.

I just wish SCV had other modes as well :-( it could have been great rather than settling for really good.

Some good ones:

Fire Emblem - fantasy turn-based-strategy game series
Legend of Zelda - I hope you know what this is already
The Elder Scrolls - Deep, very open, huge world, aimless, first person Action RPG series
(again, you should know what this is)
Phantasy Star Online - interesting futuristic fantasy RPG series
Dark/Demon's Souls - "Nintendo hard" dark fantasy action RPG

Its a bit more complex then that but look it up if you're really interested in the (very interesting backstory of the war) but its basically a hard sci-fi game that's quite unlike a lot of other shooter series.

-GTA: Every game since Vice City has been amazing. Best game worlds ever.
-Metal Gear Solid: Great stealth with a completely ridiculous story that you can't help but believe.
-Jak and Daxter series: Amazing platforming with amazing game worlds to explore.
-Monster Hunter: Because sometimes I just wanna hunt big ass monsters.
-Fallout: A few misses in the series but all of the main(numbered) games are really good.

Zelda.

So simple and yet so strangely captivating. Every time I think about any one game in the series for an extended period of time, I get the urge to play it again from the start. And then I usually do it.

Oop, got me thinking about OoT. Time to boot the 3DS.

Diablo - Action RPG heavily based on loot, you fight a variety of enemies from Hell along the way to defeating the Prime Evils. Don't bother getting the Diablo III though.
The Elder Scrolls - Tolkien-Fantasy Style RPG. Not much else to say.
Fallout - The first few are turn-based RPG's similar to Jagged Allience in a post-apocalyptic setting. The last two are pretty much The Elder Scrolls set in the Fallout Universe.
Halo - Science-Fiction FPS. Most of the games star a super-soldier named Captain King killing aliens and infected human things.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - FPS set in Ukraine almost thirty years after the Chernobyl NPP disaster. You fight soldiers and a variety of mutants. Very atmospheric.

No, you don't need to have played The Witcher to understand The Witcher 2. It helps, but it isn't necessary. The stories are mostly independent of one another even though TW2 is a direct sequel and involves many of the same characters.

Bear in mind that the game will treat you like an adult: it doesn't explain every little detail because it assumes that you are paying attention and can reason your way through things. There's also a good wiki and a very friendly, very helpful fan community on the game's home forums if you try it and decide that you want more info.

EDIT: Sorry, OT--favorite series

Final Fantasy, like that was hard to guess!
The earlier games are better if you love JRPG's but the thing I love the most about them are characters and stories I completely fell in love with like they were real little people. I think games work so much better when you actually care about the characters.

Phantasy Star. The original series, not the PSO Sci-FiMonster Hunter grindfest but the old epic & imaginative open worlds (yes plural) rpgs the series started off as.

Nothing current though. It seems that every time I think I've found a new favorite series, the devs find a way to completely fuck everything up. Major disappointments like Fallout New Vegas, Burnout Paradise (and Crash), and GTA4 prevent those series' from making my list.

Except Katamari... the only Katamari game that sucked was that psp version.
