What Is Your Idea Of The Average American?

I imagined Americans to be like Vanilla Ice and wearing gold chains and backwards baseball caps and t-shirts that have the RUN DMC logo on it...

But then I actually went to America and I was disappointed. The only gold chains were in store windows and on street stalls on sale to tourists. Venice Beach has a bunch of muscly men on the beach flexing their muscles, so it is entirely possible that California has camp value.

Never been to America apart from California and Las Vegas/Arizona, so I'm guessing New York is VERY different.

naive? what do you mean by that? we've been through plenty of wars in the last century and we're a global power. if you mean politically naive, then i agree. the population is mostly left-wing idiots who ignorantly think the government is always right and will take care of everything. i personally think the government should get the fuck out of my business, but whatever. this is the wrong thread to be discussing political opinions. as for blindly patriotic, hell yes we are.

I'm impressed by the civility of this thread thusfar. I wonder when the trolls will get here and start flinging poo.

One thing I'm curious of... just about all of the posts here have said americans are fat/obese. I'm curious as to where this comes from. Sure America might have its fair share of fat people... but they're not the majority. Fat people stick out of the crowd (literally) as much here as they do anywhere. They're certainly not the majority, at least not where I live, and I was under the impression that I lived in one of the top 5 fattest cities in America.

no,we never will. you know why? because we've never lost a war,and fought through some of the worst wars in the last 500 years. revolutionary,1812,civil,WWI,WWII,korean,vietnam,gulf,and right now iraqi/afgan. i believe we're the best country in all history, but that's just because i'm quite a bit ignorant. i love my country. and that's that.

by Buddha's left nut they do send the worst fucking chocolate in the world to the U.S I swear, I haven't had anything half decent since I moved here...it's all powdery and crumbles, and is so....how should I say this...it lacks body, and richness, even the expensive stuff.

Before I moved to the states, I think I more pictured the " east cost" stereotypes, and rednecks.. very little in between....though I moved to the southwest, then eventually settled here in the northwest.

I feel sorta at home here in the north west...KINDA has some familiarity with my hometown of Portree.

I never saw the fat thing really, as I've seen the pounds being packed on just as heavily with other English speaking nations...

and to give the Yanks SOME credit, they are not the fattest nation anymore, Australia took that title this year, and the US dropped to like 5th

Uhhhhhhh....Last time i checked America is not even 400 hundred years old, and never lost a war? Is that suppose too be some sort of a joke? What about Korea? Or Vietnam? And what makes you think your country is the best in all of history? Most of Western Europe has much better living standards the them America has. Not to mention that in Americas lifetime it has only been a global superpower for about 60-70 years and it's already loosing ground to the China, India, and the EU.

EDIT: By saying America is not even 400 years old i mean the did not become there own country until after the war with the English.
i just meant in the last 500 years. i didn't mean it had to be the USA yet. anyways, korea wasn't lost,it just didn't turn out well, like vietnam. as i said,i believe we're the best because i'm a little ignorant to the rest of the world. we are a great country. i don't need people telling me america sucks.

You never lost a war? lol. You lost 1812 (invaded, got pushed back, had the White House burned, and only went back to the old borders because the Brit in charge didn't want to risk any losses in battle so he pulled back), korea (you won, then decided to push towards china, who pushed you back...that's a loss), and vietnam (ran screaming from the country pretty much). Iraqi/afgan, yeah, those are largely a loss too. You entered WWII at the end of the war, like little self interested cowards you only joined the allies when you yourself were threatened. Ever since WWII you have continued to fight not for what was right, but only for what was in your self interest. While your individual soldiers have often been admirable, the American military strategy and success is spotty at best.
we have never lost a war...lets just leave it at that.
i believe we should.

American chocolate is so so bad. I can't even begin to understand it. It's like alien food, even the expensive stuff.

That's right people, we Aussies may not look like much, but we'll fatten up for the oncoming ice age, and live through it with our lack of ozone layer. Gobal warming means nothing to the seal people of Australia!

You'll have to forgive me for being weird, it's past midnight and I forgot to eat dinner.

Actually it's something like 58% or 68% of americans are considered 'overweight' by medical standards which is more than half; the majority!

Yeah, we keep all our Vanilla Ice look alikes in NYC. Actually, most people I met around the world thought americans looked like what we do 10-15 years ago in fashion because all the TV shows they were watching were that old. So don't feel too bad.

You should go to Chicago instead of New York. It's kind of the same but more low key and the only tourists from out of the country tend to be from Asia (I have no idea why)

What people who don't live in America have to realize is that America is roughly the size of 4/5 the size of all of Europe (even the really eastern parts)
Think how many different cultures are in Europe.
The USA is odd in this way every region of the country is almost like it's own country. Different Laws, different major religion, political affiliations, cuisine, accents, the majority opinion. the USA is a microcosm of the earth as a whole nearly every culture on earth (and some that are not even around in the countries they started in) are represented in practice of our social mores or in the blood of our peoples. If a typical someone from what we call ?the bible belt? (which is what most of you seem to envision) were to meet a person from say San Jose they are going to be like someone from another country to him.

Also, the cheeseburger thing; We?re more into eating fake Mexican food now.

I don't really rely on stereotypes to define people.

For example, my dad is from a small fishing village in the north of England. He said that when he was young, he was told that anyone not from their village was a foreigner, and not to be trusted. And yes that included people from the village two miles down the road.

I don't want to be glaring at other villages! I want to be all global thinking and so forth.

Weird thing for me though. On TV, I can clearly hear the difference between the various American accents, even when they aren't exagerated or anything. In person, all Americans sound the same to me. I've met people from all over the states. I don't understand why my ears have decided they all have the same voice.
Thats because its all a conspiracy, America is actually a small island off the coast of Cornwall consisting of about 50 people and a fantastic cgi studio and a state of the art cosmetics lab. You are the victim of a terrible joke!
Strange. In America we think what you described is the mythical land of "England".
As you may well know england is about one street, we are all called or know someone called john smith and we pass the queen every day in our stagecoach before sinking our awfully dentisted teeth into tea and scones what what!.... oh and we all wear bowler hats
Yes, we here in America laugh at you as we eat our mandatory cheeseburgers while listening to overly patriotic country music and saluting the flag the required three times a day.

Well I guess the most stereotypical is the fat, loud, food munching, Southerner being a tourist shouting at Chineese people.

But I know better, and now love you Amerians.
Add gun to those two and you get my vision of an American.

Also, he must get 2 plastical surgeries a year. Or if it's a man, 2 cheeseburgers at McDonalds a day.
You know what's funny about this? No one I personally know is like this, but I have seen/heard quite a few people that would fit into what you guys said, sans tourist.
