Hey, topic was what was one's dream job. Didn't specify if one was able to accomplish it too! XD

I have been looking into how I could potentially break into the industry, but have been struggling to figure out in what capacity. I've been working in enterprise software for three years now, and though it's at least in a related industry, working on the consulting/business side, my job experience so far doesn't seem to have any obvious applications in the game industry. Not only that but even if it did, I am not sure I would want to do that kind of stuff in the game industry.
You'd be surprised how general programming knowledge is probably more useful to game development than what you might get from a game dev school. Memory management, error checking, good coding practices, version control, etc. etc. Not just gameplay programming.

My current strategy is the maneuver myself into another position sometime within the next year or two that has a broader application to other industries/jobs. If it works out I may find myself there someday XD
A better strategy is grab Unity3D, allocate a day on the weekend or an hour every morning or night or something. Make something small, start off with like just having a cube move with your controller. Make it so you avoid opposing spheres while eating smaller cubes. Set up maze. Voila, Pac-Man.
Then make something more complex.

If I couldn't choose the job I actually have it'd be a boardgame developer maybe, or something similair.
Oh yeah? Got any samples of concepts you're working on?
One thing that always bothers me is that a lot of my friends are not local, or it is hard to get everyone together for a game. Online versions of my favourite boardgames tend to prefer you to be all playing at the same time, which doesn't work as well when one friend has a 1yo baby to take care of and often has to step away.
So, why not also design them so they work online, but since it's a boardgame conversion and thus turn-based, make it so it's like play-by-mail format where you take turns when you get around to it? Sure games can be slower, but at least one is able to play with your friends. Enable push notification when it's your turn, or have a design where gameplay is done simultaneously (i.e. Robo-Rally, the NeoGeo Pocket game Faselei!), so when the last person submits their move, it processes the turn and then everyone can do their next turn.
Just my thoughts.
