Well, I'm already doing game development, so I'm pretty happy as far as that goes.

The ideal situation would probably be to reach a level of financial security and cross discipline competence such that I could simply sit in my room, making games of my own design, entirely by myself, with relatively little regard for mass appeal, just allowing me to explore mechanics and ideas I find interesting.

Honestly, I'm incredibly motivated by animals, and I think the most fulfilling job I could do with my current skillset is something involving them, but I don't think I'm smart enough to be a veterinarian.

I'd love to be an animator, too.
You could animate animals! OR MAKE ANIMATIONS FOR ANIMALS!

I see a lucrative future for you, my friend.

I'd like to do some youtubering, and I will once I get this goddamn rig upgraded so that I can actually run a game AND recording software at the same time. I'm quite good at talking, always have been, so I figure it's perfectly possible to git gud at that.

I'd love to be a strength coach both for the general population and athletes as well.

Aside from that, I just want a nice job that pays reasonably well and lets me work from 08-16. That's really the main thing for me.

I just want to own my own dog shelter. Really I'm sick and tired of the amount of bad people and bad dog owners out there. It's been my dream for as long as I can remember to work with dogs. Sadly I'm nowhere near a dog shelter to work for one and too far from a vets to volunteer :( But one day, I will have my own dog shelter and will help any dog that needs it.

Hell, today I got really angry and shouted at someone. They were walking their dog and their dog stopped to try and pee but the owner yanked on her lead and stopped her. I couldn't hold back. I hate bad dog owners that do this. What, are they in such a rush that they can't spare 10 seconds for the dog they have taken into their care? It's just fucking ridiculous. Just... I need to take dog away from these kind of people! It's just not right :(

That, or I'd like to be a successful writer.

A, uh...a journalist. Who writes about games.

Recent events have shaken that idea. Not the journalist part though.

some kind of musician. probably a hip hop producer but rapping would be cool too. wouldn't mind being in a decent alt rock band in the vein of brand new but hip hop production's what I'm trying to get into atm

alternatively, something that would allow be to move from one part of the world to another every couple of years or so

I would like to work for an F1 team since I am currently studying Mechanical Engineering. That's something I have been wanting to do for a while.

Another job I would love to do but probably wouldn't get to is as an independent game developer.

I want to be a freelance blacksmith and woodworker doing custom jobs for people's houses, art and historically accurate armour & weaponry. I'd like to partner up with someone who knows tailoring.

Right now I'm a metal fabricator, carpenter and industrial machinery mechanic. I have the rudimentary skills, just not the dough to set up my own shop where I can really begin to learn those trades.

More or less what I do now (composing music) but on bigger projects that pay better :p

A film or game at the commercial level, with a good chance of success would be really nice. I'm not necessarily talking blockbusters here (although that would be very fun!) but say, if I regularly got work composing for the bigger indie films and games out there that would be great. Especially since most of that stuff is depressing and I specialise in depressing!
Hey, if you are able to send me a message with some samples & maybe somewhat simpler contact information, I might be able to help you here :). (no promises however!)

Since I don't have any connections of any kind, I'm not going to consider this realistic but still: I really, REALLY want to be a screen actor. It doesn't even matter what kind: Voice-Acting, TV, Film...I don't care, I would just really like to be a screen-actor. Sadly, I live on the wrong side of the US...I live close to Atlanta, so there's always the chance of my being able to harass people until I'm put in Zombie Make-up and killed in Walking Dead...assuming that show is still going on.

The closest I've come to this is being paid to scare people on a haunted trail.

Hey, topic was what was one's dream job. Didn't specify if one was able to accomplish it too! XD

I have been looking into how I could potentially break into the industry, but have been struggling to figure out in what capacity. I've been working in enterprise software for three years now, and though it's at least in a related industry, working on the consulting/business side, my job experience so far doesn't seem to have any obvious applications in the game industry. Not only that but even if it did, I am not sure I would want to do that kind of stuff in the game industry.
You'd be surprised how general programming knowledge is probably more useful to game development than what you might get from a game dev school. Memory management, error checking, good coding practices, version control, etc. etc. Not just gameplay programming.

My current strategy is the maneuver myself into another position sometime within the next year or two that has a broader application to other industries/jobs. If it works out I may find myself there someday XD
A better strategy is grab Unity3D, allocate a day on the weekend or an hour every morning or night or something. Make something small, start off with like just having a cube move with your controller. Make it so you avoid opposing spheres while eating smaller cubes. Set up maze. Voila, Pac-Man.

Then make something more complex.

If I couldn't choose the job I actually have it'd be a boardgame developer maybe, or something similair.
Oh yeah? Got any samples of concepts you're working on?

One thing that always bothers me is that a lot of my friends are not local, or it is hard to get everyone together for a game. Online versions of my favourite boardgames tend to prefer you to be all playing at the same time, which doesn't work as well when one friend has a 1yo baby to take care of and often has to step away.

So, why not also design them so they work online, but since it's a boardgame conversion and thus turn-based, make it so it's like play-by-mail format where you take turns when you get around to it? Sure games can be slower, but at least one is able to play with your friends. Enable push notification when it's your turn, or have a design where gameplay is done simultaneously (i.e. Robo-Rally, the NeoGeo Pocket game Faselei!), so when the last person submits their move, it processes the turn and then everyone can do their next turn.

Just my thoughts. ;)

Well my SUPER job is to get a writing job at Pixar. I'm currently in school getting my bachelor's degree in Dramatic Writing. I've got one year left and so far all of my writing professors have told me they like my style, so here's hoping. That's like my super high ultimate dream job though.

My somewhat more realistic one is to write for TV. Maybe get a job at [adult swim] or who knows, maybe I could join the writer's room on Agents of SHIELD or something (I've got a small in with someone at Disney, so fingers crossed)

On top of that, I'd like to continue doing webcomics, so my dream job consists of writing scripts to bring entertainment to people while also working on my drawings to...bring entertainment to people.

I like to make people laugh, and I tend to do alright with that when it comes to my writing so...who can say? In one more year I'll be out there peddling spec scripts, going for internships or entry level positions, and networking with former classmates.

I haven't really found a name for it, but in essence dictator of the world. I'd suppose EurAsia would suffice as well, but I like a challenge. Of course I'll come up with a title that sounds slightly more benevolent than world dictator, but you get the gist.
Stage 1 is likely to become a high school teacher and start training / indoctrinating / scouting for a large amount of youngsters so that I'll have a small but competent force of specialist in all manor of fields. After a certain amount of years I'll begin stage 2.
Stage 2. Is likely to find employment in the energy business, where I'll attempt to focus on all manors of solar powers. During stage 2 my loyal followers will mature and grow more skilled. The goal of stage 2 is to gather funds, gather a foothold in the energy industry, learn the strength and weaknesses of said industry and how to exploit them.
Stage 3 use my followers funds and knowledge gained from stage 1 and 2 to completely take over the solar energy industry and sabotage all other energy industries. after holding the monopoly on energy conquest of the world becomes an easy task.
Stage 1 and 2 might take a while though, not quiet sure if I'll ever get to stage 3.
