What is your Top 10 Games of all time?

As per usual, this thread is just the top ten games that I can think of that the moment. This list is up for change at any moment.

1. The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion- I don't think I've sunk more hours into a game. Easily 200+ on console and around 50 on PC. This game is just awesome.

2. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3- Easily the best Warriors game I've played to date. Great roster of characters and awesome updates from the second game. Dream Log mode will have you coming back for more constantly.

3. Mass Effect 3- The entire series is fantastic, but I enjoyed this one the most. The combat reached its peak and the story was fantastic, yes including the ending.

4. Medieval 2: Total War- Best game in the franchise and the one I've sunk the most hours into. Great unit variaty, large amount of factions, and just overall fun.

5. Knights of the Old Republic- So many hours spent playing this on my Xbox. I never beat it until 2014, but I had a blast just playing up to the final battle over and over. That should say something, either about me or the game.

6. Dragon Age: Origins- I've easily beaten this game about ten times, each character going over 24 hour playtime each. The great combat, story, and characters just keep me coming back.

7. Samurai Warriors 4- It took me a while to get into this one, but I enjoy it a lot. Characters are awesome and the hyper combat system is downright awesome.

8. Batman: Arkham City- Took the awesome that was Asylum and cranked it up to eleven. Add in the fact that I can play as Nightwing just makes it even better.

9. Pokemon: Alpha Sapphire- They took my nostalgia of my first Pokemon game and gave it complete redo. Everything added in this game makes it my favorite.

10. Infamous 2- Most likely the high point of this series. Great combat and they actually made Cole a character.

I think it'd be cool if you could do something similar OP, given that Top 10 threads typically don't invoke much discussion. I shan't be so wordy in descriptions, though an exception is needed.

10: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009) (10-10)

Last time round, I tied SM and Downpour together, but upon replaying Downpour again to finish off achievements, I do come to realise that there are some gripes with it that put it just below Shattered Memories. Call it the honorary number 11, as I do genuinely adore Downpour and think that it and Shattered Memories are indicative of why it's such a shame that Konami are fucking stupid and mishandle the series so by refusing to continue the series' high ride after them. Shattered Memories and Downpour are worthy games to the series, and I'd argue Shattered Memories had the superior story to its predecessor, though both it and Silent Hill 1 are the closest games in the series to actually scaring me, so yay for that! I'm a sucker for a snow atmosphere, though.

9: Halo 3: ODST (2009) (9-9)

Halo is one Hell of a sincere series that has always loved to experiment with familiar gameplay being applicable to various scenarios and styles of play. With ODST, Halo's gameplay blends well with the beautifully crafted lone wanderer tone and it calls back to earlier games whilst feeling new enough to stand on its own two feet (*cough* Halo 4 *cough*). I understand why some may find ODST to be "meh", but I love it with all my heart.

8: Saints Row 2 (2008) (8-8)

Much as I love Saints Row IV, Saints Row 2 still stands as the game I feel compelled to replay over and over, simply because I find the catharsis to be so strong whilst the story so tonally balanced even with all the grim and wacky moments. It's such a damn fine game, and welcome given how crap Grant Theft Auto IV was that same year.

7: Silent Hill 3 (2003) (7-7)

Yes, beloved over the brilliant Silent Hill 2. A recent replay had me quite irritated a few times by this game, especially because of the haunted mansion segment (bad checkpoint system), but damn Heather is such a good character that she could have been in Homecoming and made it a good game.

6: Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012) (6-6)

Oh how I simply love this game. With Black Ops and Modern Warfare 3 posing a risk of the series stagnating, Black Ops II came in like a golden knight riding a unicorn to breathe fresh air into familiar gameplay. Add in a damn fun multiplayer section and good Zombies maps (Buried aside), and you get quite the well crafted game.

5: Call of Duty: World at War (2008) (5-5)

But much as Black Ops II continues to amaze me with every second of its existence, gracing my Xbox 360 every time its in, World at War stands as my favourite in the series. For how grimdark almost everything is in World at War, it should be admired for managing to create a "War-is-heyaallll" tone whilst being light hearted enough with its flat characters to properly balance it. Plus, I'm a sucker for its Zombies maps, especially the simple but elegant debut map Nacht der Untoten.

4: XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2012) (3-4)

I don't think any game as been as engrossing as this game was. Unlike Dark Souls, XCOM actually feels remotely possible despite the RNG, meaning that the repeating smashings of your head against a wall will actually lead to progress, and the wall is made of roses and concentrated joy. I don't know if I'd ever indulge in turn-based games in general, but XCOM has me hooked.

3: Halo 2 (2004, 2014) (4-3)

I must say I do really enjoy Halo 2's expansion of the relatively simple Halo: Combat Evolved. Does that make it the superior game? I'm not too sure on that, but they're both damn good games. My affection for the series is unparalleled so long as the product was released before 2010, with Halo 2 being the cherry on the top of a series I so adore. I still think it's bullshit that the Prophet of Mercy was handled in the way they did it, but on the whole, I just cannot shout Halo 2's praises enough in the campaign department.

2: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (2006) (2-2)

I'm not in to The Elder Scrolls franchise. I played Morrowind first and didn't much care for it. Played Skyrim years after about six million hours of Oblivion and just found it dull. Oblivion is pretty bad in almost every single aspect of its being, but I just find it so damn engaging and beautiful (sans people models) that I've let myself get lost in Cyrodiil many-a-time.

1: FarCry (2004) (1-1)

I don't much care for the series on the whole, nor do I care for Crysis. FarCry 1 is all I need. It's a cliché bundle of joy, and I love fighting through its world with the ridiculous set pieces, mercenary dialogue and the varied levels. Plus Trigens. Trigens are awesome and sometimes still come off as intimidating. It's a solid shooter as well besides some dodgy AI design given the stealth aspect of the combat, and much like BioShock it's not too difficult but does require your attention given the merciless nature of the enemies.

Ah always a hard list to make. I think this list is about right but it always shifts and I may have forgotten some games but whatever:

10) Pokemon Ruby

There had to be a Pokemon game in this list, and while red was a contender I think a lot of that is nostalgia. Ruby however was just a great game for me, and the best GBA game ever made in my opinion.

9) Banjo Kazooie

This game was just awesome. As a kid I hated this game but as I got older I thought i'd give it another shot and my god how I loved it. The music is so varying, the adult humour hidden behind specific dialect is hilarious and the gameplay is just smooth.

8) Paper Mario

For me this game is an underrated game, probably due to being released on the N64 in the late years. This game is just full of colour and to me is everything a Mario game should feel like.

7) Mario Kart 64

Might be nostalgia but I think I've gone past that on this game. Played, and still play, the hell out of this game.

6) Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic

I played this game late and was very, very surprised at how in depth it was. The setting is great, the story even better and I loved the gameplay, which many would say is the weakest part of the game, but there's nothing more fun than force choking some republic scum.

5) Super Smash Bros Melee

Never had SSB on the N64, never heard of it. Got this game and it was so good, I mean, a whole bunch on Nintendo characters fighting it out. Epic! Also it had the smoothest gameplay out of all the smash bros games.

4)Call of Duty 4

The best COD. No ridiculous killstreaks, no stupid dual weapons, a master server, cool mod servers and just hella fun to play.

3) Team Fortress 2

The FPS that showed not every shooting game has to be gritty and ugly but can be humorous, colourful and different. The different classes are what makes it for me, and the fact that if you actually work as a team, you will win.

2) Mass Effect 2

Went full geek on the final mission and my adrenaline got going, which no game had ever done. Amazing story, quality gameplay and the interesting choices you made and have to make made it, for me, the best RPG ever made.

1) Halo: Combat Evolved

Where my PC gaming started. My first online game and will always have a place in my heart. The community for the PC version of this game were, and have been, the best I've ever seen, and I've met so many cool people through this game.

This is near impossible for individual games so unless I state the game in the series assume I mean the entire series is so fundamentally well done that they count for all, but I'll give it my best shot.

World of Warcraft: What the hell can you say about this hulking behemoth that others haven't. If you haven't ever tried an MMO you know exactly which door to knock on first.

Pokemon: This entire series is exquisitely simple at it's core, yet so rich.

Final Fantasy 9: My idea of a perfect final fantasy, from the story, to the setting, to the characters, the music, the visual style. I cannot ask for more from Square Enix and sadly it looks like I'll be asking a long time yet.

Skyrim (PC): The PC version of skyrim has eclipsed the meagre console pretenders by it's modders alone, the sheer volume of things to do in this game both player and mod based reaches dumbfounding levels. And that's assuming you're not already blown away by the atmosphere, visuals and winding pathways to take to become your ultimate ideal hero.

Terraria (PC): Good grief, talk about not judging a game by it's game case, I was sucked into terraria through a friend back when it was in very early days, and even then I was amazed at how far this took the concept of minecraft and pushed it into RPG territory, and the amount of things to craft and create has only multiplied by 200 thousand since it's inception. A glorious 2D timewaster with a mass of challenges awaiting you.

Crash Bandicoot 1-3: 3D platformers to make you sweat and cheer, these were the perfect introduction to 3D platformers back in the day and are a must play for anyone who wants to see the progression of 2D into 3D (And done correctly)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles: The one, the only, perfect Sonic game, and in my opinion the only reason people still pay attention to the mutant. This game is a relatively simple 2D platformer but it gave you such a rush, large 2D acts flying by as you bomp metal animals on the head for points using electric, fire and bubble shields with the best mini games the series has ever had. Translating such awesome into 3D was too herculean a task for Sega however, but this shining moment in their history hasn't lost it's appeal.

The Legend of Zelda:Twilight Princess: Everything Ocarina of time did and better. Fight me.

Super Smash Bros.: Fight me in here, I'll 1v1 you with pikachu m8, bring it.

Kingdom Hearts 2: Tetsuya Nomura's crazy Disney cross over fanfiction. It shouldn't have worked. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE WORKED.

These kind of lists are always tough to put together. Here's my crack at it right now:

- Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix: I accept that the game might not be the greatest in the world - its combat can be repetitive and the writing and narrative is a bit wonky but I just love this game. I can always go back to it and whenever I play it I just get sent back to being a kid again.

- Dragon Quest VIII: The Journey of the Cursed King: This is definitely one of the best JRPGs I've ever played. Amazing cel-shaded graphics, an outstanding soundtrack, a huge sweeping story and the best kind of old-fashioned turn-based combat that I absolutely adore.

- Chrono Trigger DS: If Dragon Quest VIII is the best classic JRPG I've played, then Chrono Trigger is the best of the era of JRPGs that introduced the Active Time Battle system and that moved away from the standard fantasy setting. The DS version adds to the original's achievements (which are many) with more endings and content.

- Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver: Every main game in the series is of a high standard, but these are the enhanced remakes of my previous favourite games in the series and they are pretty much flawless.

- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker: Cel-shaded graphics, the series' high standard of soundtrack work, a great story, Link actually has a character and the sailing all add together to make one of my favourite games in the series and in general.

- Dishonored: This is another one where I can definitely accept the flaws but I've had such fun with it every time I've played it. It's certainly one of the few games where I've beaten it and then immediately replayed it and it's one of my favourite stealth games I've tried.

- Final Fantasy: Dissidia 012 [duodecim]: Easily the best and most fluid fighter I've played. A great cast, a decent overhaul of the first games' Adventure mode and heaps of Final Fantasy nostalgia tied with really solid fighting mechanics make for a game I happily spent over 200 hours on.

- Persona 3 Portable: This game actually hit me in the 'feels'. The ending is terrifically beautiful, the dungeon-crawling is tense and the school-sim elements is engaging. The greatest addition to this version though, and what sets it above the other versions of the game, is the added playable female main character who, despite being a voiceless character, manages to have heaps of personality that really set her apart from her male counterpart.

- Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD: Though the series is infamous for its cutscenes, I adore the jungle setting, the cold war time period and the real emotional impact that it managed to impart on me. Additionally, I personally really love the micromanaging elements of the game, like the camo, face paint and medicine menus.

- Mass Effect 2: I love all 3 of the Mass Effect games but the writing, improved gameplay and wonderful character focus put the second game well above the other 2 games.

 

[F-I-D-O]

1. Doom II - still one of the best FPS ever made. I have a massive amount of nostalgia for it, but it holds up to my expectations every time.

2. Persona 4 Golden - My personal favorite RPG, not to mention JRPG. I love the social links, the monster collection, and everything else. It's amazing that they managed to turn anime filler into a compelling story, and it made me feel like when I played Pokemon as a kid.

3. Metal Gear Solid 3 - The best MGS game, hands down. The story stands alone as a singular compelling arc, while still enriching the series as a whole. Still one of my favorite survival games.

4. Pokemon Blue - Remains my favorite pokemon game, and what any monster collection game gets compared to.

5. Mass Effect 2 - I love sci fi with an unhealthy passion. The setting combined with the great character cast made it fly past ME1 in my rankings. Also, passable combat helps. The only downside is that they turned the planets of ME1 into basic compounds, and I felt the amount of characters guaranteed some - especially the DLC KAsumi and Zaeed - would get the short stick.

6. Last of Us - I don't have a PS4, but I still adored the original release of LoU. The gunplay isn't enjoyable until you upgrade aiming, but the sheer brutality of the combat, overall tenseness, and a surprisingly good multiplayer mode made LoU stay in my PS3 most of 2013.

7. Metroid Zero Mission - Essentially the GBA remake of Metroid, this really introduced me to the whole genre of Metroidvanias. I'd played Samus in SSB, but Zero Mission told Samus's story. The irritating zero suit segment at the end was the main irritant in an otherwise great remake.

8. Dawn of War II - I love Warhammer 40k, and this remains the only game to make me feel like I was commanding a squad of space marines. I like Space Marine, but DoWII just feels so much better. The squad based combat mixed with Diablo progression was a huge hook for me, even as the missions got repetitive.

9. Star Wars Republic Commando - THE multiplayer game I played growing up. It got me into the Star Wars EU, and the light tactical shooting in the Star Wars universe is something I'd love to have again.

10. S.L.A.I (Steel Lancer Arena International) - Mostly nostalgia for the PS2 era put this on the list. It still holds up pretty well, even if the single player takes a few hours to get going. You could tinker and customize mechs, but unlike Last Raven it was actually feasible to make a good mech as a new player in ten minutes. I loved the fast pace of the combat, and the variety in the maps, and split screen was great. Also, having a samurai polar bear as a computer chip encouraging you to keep killing enemies was fantastic.

Bastion -Despite it not being in my top 2, I consider this game the closest thing to perfection in the industry
Borderlands 2 -I loved the original. This was better in every way.
Mass Effect 2 -I enjoyed the whole series, but 2 was easily the best to me.
Fallout 3 -With mods
Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker -I even loved the sailing.
Shining Force -The first RPG I ever played.
Dishonored -I loved the art style, the story, and most of all, the awesome stealth gameplay.
Assassin's Creed II -Ezio's character arc is one of the best in gaming. Easily the best game of the series.

1. mass effect 3- didnt care for the ending ,one way or another, but its so fun getting to that point I must have sunk 300+ hours into just that game.

2. FFVI- this is the best FF game ever made so you know nuff said

3.golden sun/lost age- kinda cheating here but the two games might as well be one game considering how they literally go right into each other.

4. fire emblem awakening- likable characters and great tactical experience.

5. DA:I- as close as DA has come to getting it right, room to improve but hell of a lot of fun.

6. tales of symphonia- best of the tales games and fun to replay.

7. star craft 2- the best RTS on the market and its even really fun to watch.

8. hearthstone- great card game and once again fun to watch others play it.

9. pokemon- the gold standard for what a RPG should be.

10. sonic the hedgehog- the first game I beat on my own so it will always be on this list.

Ok, I'll play- I did one of these, well it only feels like a short time ago, but it probably a year or so - this time I'm adding a more personal slant to it - these are games that are special to me in some way rather than necessarily the best games ever made. Here we go.

10. Wonderboy 3: The Dragons Trap - Growing up I had Sega Master System, instead of an NES, so no Mario for me. Playing this again recently the combat and platforming don't necessarily hold up that well, but the characters are all so cute and it had some pretty advanced mechanics for the time (hub world, RPG style equipment etc)
9. Diddy Kong Racing - For me the perfect kart racer, unlike MK it has a proper single player campaign, also great music also planes and boats.
8. Jet Set Willy - You couldn't complete it, but as a kid, just getting to the far rooms was challenge enough.
7. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - Just loved the 80's atmosphere, probably the first time a game has really evokes a real time period and place for me.
6. Dark Souls - Its on a lot of lists; obviously I enjoyed playing it, but its one of the very few games my wife has shown any interest in and she got so hooked watching me play she insisted I play it every night for a month until I finished.
5. Virtua-Fighter 5 - The first game I ever got 1000 gamerscore in.
4. Puzzle Bobble 4 - We had an original Puzzle Bobble machine in the games room in the basement of my uni. Things got very competitive. Then one day they took it away and replaced it with Puzzle Bobble 4, which blew our minds. Because it's insane.
3. Street Fighter 2 - Its hard to imagine a time when new releases were not hyped for years before they were released. I first heard of SF2 when I walked into an arcade in the rainly English resort of Hunstanton for a day trip with a friend. I was probably about 14 years old. The game looked great and sounded great, but even more cunningly there were eight (eight!) characters to choose from. We knew instantly we were going to have to play all eight, even if it meant we had no money left for any of the other new arcade games. Then we went home and didn't play it again for another year. That's how it was in those days.
2. The Hobbit Text Adventure - The first computer game I ever played at a friends house at the age of 6? 7 maybe. I was so entranced I didn't even have to say anything to my parents on the way home in the car - they just said "Christmas is coming soon".
1. Geometry Wars Retro Evolved - No nostalgia with this one. Simply the best arcade style game ever made.

10. To The Moon
The best story in gaming for me. Very emotional with the odd joke here and there to lighten the mood.

9. Portal 2
A great squeal to an interesting game. Lots of humour as well as co-op which really adds to the replay value.

8. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Even though this game came out in 2002 there is yet to be a Zelda game that looks this good. I loved every second of this game.

7. Super Metroid
This game has by far the best atmosphere on this list. Huge map as well as interesting bosses, this is one of the few Nintendo games I can pick up and play anytime.

6. Assassins Creed Brotherhood
I don't know why I prefer this to AC 2 but I just do. Ezio appears as an all round better character than he does in the previous games and the few bits outside of the animus were almost as fun as the animus.

5. Animal Crossing: Wild World
I was debating between this one and New Leaf, but I have to pick Wild World due to the sheer number of hours I put into this game. Having finished paying off my mortgage, twice. The music is relaxing and K.K. Slider makes me pick this game up almost every Saturday.

4. Postal 2
A game I only found out about 2 years ago and it has quickly become one of my favorites. The sheer amount of subtle choice you have in this game to make the right or wrong choice is amazing. Plus the dev team are supporting it after 12 years, how many other games can say that?

3. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
This game could be number one, but I have one small problem with it. That is the ability to miss your attack (even if you stand right in front of them). But apart from that this game greatly expands on an already lore rich franchise.

2. Knights of the Old Republic
The best Star Wars game! I have completed this game several times both light and dark. I am still discovering things to this day (I am currently doing a dark side play through). The characters are really well fleshed out should you chose to have them follow you around. The combat I found to be great and I even enjoyed sitting through the cut scenes. It was my favorite game until 2006.

I've already posted with Oblivion being my second favourite game, but I feel compelled to pull a "this" to this explanation of Oblivion. One of my most favourite playthroughs of the game was just wandering round the world on foot whilst doing the Mages Guild introduction and picking up the local quests I'd never seen before.
