Well really the only thing I care about fallout 4 at this early stage is whether Bethesda lets Obsidian do the writing.

I really, really hope they do.

-Combat that doesn't suck.
-A smaller game world with more dense populations so you can avoid the huge desolate bore-scape that plagued FO3. I get it, it's a nuclear wasteland... but that doesn't excuse how huge and empty it is. It's supposed to be gameplay over immersion, not the other way around.
-Some semblance of a decent story.

Bethesda have proven time and again that common sense isn't one of their strong points.

And, y'know, the Scrolls hooplah and all that jazz...
Why do people get so butthurt over the bucket thing?

Its a funny glitch they left in to make the game more fun.... like the giants throwing you 1,000 feet in the air if they kill you with a power attack.

Also the scrolls thing was something they HAD to do because of copyright laws, if they DIDN'T challenge it it would have led to tons of problems.

You've covered a number of good ones. Add to it one thing for my money. I want to be able to take over organizations. Either by hook, by crook, or Necromonger style ("You keep what you kill."), For this, I wish to take over as leader of the biggest elite army of Enclave troopers and tame the wasteland for myself, for I am the number one guy.
Wouldn't the surviving members just kill you and then reinstate a person that they trust?

Finally, get rid of the karma system, but keep the reputation system. Don't tell me whether I'm being 'good' or 'evil' let me decide for myself.
The karma system didn't really matter in New Vegas, so they were on their way to just taking it out.

Make the game not end after the last quest, the ending slides in New Vegas were boring as shit, I want to actually SEE what my choices did on the wasteland, not some fucking voice over with a picture telling me what happened.

They should not do this. Have you finished Skyrim? How did you feel? I felt empty as hell after "killing" Alduin and I had a ton of missions to do left. Leaving an ending leaves you with purpose instead of just roaming around and doing shit for giggles.

Clearly, you have not seen me play. When I say I'm the number one guy, I mean that the man who has taken over is none other than the wasteland's leading badass of hazard extermination. No one...will kill me.

An in-depth faction system (among both major and minor factions) would be quite interesting. A skyrim style leveling system could be interesting, considering I like using multiple types of guns and weapons, instead of investing in one type. Of course, you'd have the same problems as with skyrim in the fact that after you've leveled your main abilities you used to full there was nothing else to do. A Skyrim-style leveling system really has no advantages over a Fallout style one, so I'd be fine with either or.

Some sort of vehicle play would also be interesting. I mean, if the mid-western Brotherhood had a freaking airship, I would think that over the course of a few decades one guy could scrounge together some patchwork motorcycle. Seeing a Fallout set outside of America would also be interesting, as I really like the Fallout lore and would love to see what happened to whatever is left of the world.

Not boring combat
Not boring characters
Not boring armour\weapon design
Not boring environments and buildings.
NO embryo.
An actually engaging story.
Completely reworked animations to allow comfortable 3rd person play.
Scrap all that living npc crap it never added anything to immersion only to frustration.
Much smaller world packed with interesting things.

it's safe to say that i don't like Fallout 3.

New Vegas kinda hit everything I wanted out of fallout, gameplay wise.

The only thing I really want out of Fallout 4 is heavy usage of the new animation engine.

I want more, and better, animations. Blending would be nice, so things seem much more real and living.

That on top of a few things you said, but to add to your last point about smithing, I'd like them to make the armor complicated like morrowind, so I can mix and match pieces of everything so it seems like a patchwork job, like many many things in fallout.
I completely agree with this. Compare Grand theft auto IV's animation to New Vegas.. The engine is certainly holding fallout back a lot.

Mostly for Bethesda to not make it. Or to at least Bethesda make it and then sell the rights to another Fallout game to Obsidian so I actually have something to look forward to. Also on that note it would be fantastic if Bethesda just stuck to their lore on the East coast and let Obsidian keep doing their thing without Bethesda ruining it and making it so dreadfully generic(Quick give everyone power armor!)

Mutated Horses = Great Idea
Mutated Horse Armour = Not that great :)
That was hilarious.

Let's see:
-I definitely agree with having a larger amount of customization. I want to be able to go find a nail board, dip the thing in radscorpion poison and call it The Neanderthal Special. Or better yet, once I get to the point where I'm practically swimming in caps I want to make armor out of the things and strut around town.

-Having varying weather would be nice.

-Having a some sort of faster transportation would be kind of cool, even if it's something simple like a bike.

-I want to be able to choose between using VATS or a bullet-time type thing. This is mostly because VATS can be absolutely useless at times. Think about it, how many times have you used VATS in combat with let's say a shotgun, 95% hit chance or better and less than five feet away and yet you still missed?[sub]I know I've seen a bullet-time mod that replaces VATS before so it shouldn't been too hard to implement.[/sub]

-being able to set up your own house would be really cool. I can't tell you how many times I though that it would be cool to haul some of the road barricades that the Enclave set up after a while in Fallout 3 somewhere and make a little fort for myself with them.

-I indefinitely agree with the people wanting a lockpicking/hacking system where you don't have to be have certain skill level before you can even attempt the damn thing. If I find a safe with a hard lock on it when I'm out at some random area in the wastes and the best I can do is open an easy lock, unless I can make sure to remember where that safe is it will probably remain locked for a very long time and that has annoyed me to no end in the last two Fallout games.

-For a setting, I'd like to see the next Fallout game set somewhere closer to the Commonwealth that was mentioned in Fallout 3. If they are able to make things like androids, I want to see what else they've been able to create. Hell, a major plot twist could be that you are an android.

That's about all that I can think of at the moment.

I'd like to see something similar to building your own faction/tribe

A way this could be implemented is when you find a city full of raiders or normal wastlelanders you could convince them to join you, once you have at least 10 people on your side you could turn the abandoned building in which they were found in to your main faction building, you could also slowly expand your influence to more cities or random travellers. Also every now and then you could be challenged by a rival faction/tribe which could lead you to a raid where you can take other their area of influence, and if their armour and weapons are stronger you could make them your own by adding your factions emblem to them.

Another thing I would like is the ability to have various ways of earning caps/influencing people, for example, holding them at gunpoint, bribing them, destroying one of their factions building or leaders etc.

Hope everyone agrees with my ideas :)

They should go and look at Dark Souls for how to do free roam melee combat.

I would love to just sit Todd Howard down in front of it and say LOOK AT THIS, LOOK AT IT. They almost had it in Skyrim but they just fell short and ended up in hacky slashy land again.

Town building is fun especially in games with item scavanging. I think stocking a shop and selling stuff would be great fun in the Fallout universe too, Recettear style.

I played a mod in Skyrim where you could collect items and build your own house by the side of a river.

Great times.

Or literally be able to buy a pool where you empty all you caps into it and be able to swim around in it like Scrooge McDuck :D

OT: They should just make it like the original game hurr durr. Nostalgia, nostalgia, Bethesda sucks, turn based hurr /sarcasm

On a serious note

- Better and tighter combat mechanics (Make shooting and melee combat more satisfying pretty much (Being able to duel wield guns and melee weapons would be nice too))
- Heaps more customisation (Be able to play as a ghoul, weapon customisation, armour customisation etc.)
- Vehicles (I like walking but sometimes that's just not enough, maybe limit fuel use so it's more of a rare but satisfying event)
- Better AI (I'd like to fight some enemies that at least use flanking tactics)
- More in depth NPC's (I not asking for Pulp Fiction quality writing, just at least make me care if they die)
- Maybe the setting could be Chicago (I don't know that much about 'merica but it seems like a logical setting)
- Something that vaguely resembles colour
- For both Bethesda and Obsidian to come to an arrangement that lets them both work on it.

A sprint button

More giant enemies

More power weapons (like the Fatman) to kill the giant enemies with.

Cazaclaws

Assassination missions

Fix more glitches before releasing the damn game.

the one thing I disliked about fallout vegas and fallout was the lack of encouragement to use bush food in comparison to meds.

Id like also to see a bigger emphasis balanced on all the factions such as the khans, brotherhood of steel and that raider gang with motorhead or whatever his face was. It would of been great to see more quests from these factions (maybe not the B.o.S) but a lot more influence in the world.

Id also love the idea of having motor vehicle or at least the ability to repair or construct a transport using the workbench. Even having some sort of enclave fusion fuel as an upgrade so your vehicle wouldn't get stranded in the middle of nowhere.

edit: Id also love an idea to be able to build your own base with upgrades similar to what they had in morrowind bloodmoon with the fortress. How you could employ more guards and upgrade the walls.

Just surprises really. Everything was pretty good in New Vegas. Just surprise me with stuff.

Maybe ability to play as a ghoul?
Psi powers?
Secret Moon base that you can transport to?
Ability to play as an android?
Has part of the setting in China? Wonder what happen to them?
Less desert, more overgrown vegetation?
Omega man vampires hunting you?

Have followers apply non-combat skills to help you out as well as aid you in combat.

For example, a follower that specializes in lockpicking can be commanded to pick any locks the player character doesn't have the skills for.
