Isnt Catherine some sort of action puzzle game thats sort of a cross between Qbert and umm...tetris? (hard to describe) where the main story is about some guy going out with 2 girls called Catherine...with the other one spelt with a K or somthing?
the core gameplay is probably tame, though the cutscenes/aesthetics might just be disturbing or something....again i don't really know much about it, but chances are that it being translated/published by a not well known company has something to do with it.

It's not a shooter.
Gods forbid right-wing media (or, heck, the more happiness-controlling elements of the left-wing media) expose their audience to the fact that video games have the potential to be anything other than raping people and shooting them in the face. Wouldn't want them to suddenly understand the potential diversity of games, now, would we?
Even Mass Effect's controversy probably only existed because it had shooter elements; otherwise, the good people at Fox probably wouldn't have known it was a video game.

I doubt most gamers are even aware of Catherine's existence, let alone the baby boomers who run TV channels and churches.

Now we have a game that is thematically (or so I've read) about sex--indeed, about pre-marital sex and cheating (something I would expect the Christian right to spontaneously combust over)--that has a picture of a half-naked man sliding between the... surprisingly reasonably sized breasts of a blond hottie as she removes her skimpy nightdress, and nobody seems to care.
I do agree that's a net positive, but what I think is more telling is that Fox News and their ilk only seem to act as our "moral guardians" when it's convenient for them (i.e., when all the real news dries up).
P.S.: In spite of the fact that I don't own a PS3 or X360, I already bought a copy of Catherine because I was worried that the shitstorm could hit at any time and Catherine might get deported back to Japan. Guess I was being overly-paranoid, but whatever. Supporting innovative and unusual titles is its own reward, though it doesn't do much to take the sting out of looking like an idiot.
Its a kooky Japanese game. No one in their right mind is going to take it seriously, because it doesn't matter how good your metaphor is if one half of it involves you being eaten by a giant undead baby. You WILL lose your audience. It didn't work for Drakengard, either.

It's an obscure Japanese game that's gotten pretty much no coverage at all outside the gaming community. Fox News etc don't even know it exists.
Atlus in general is pretty much immune to moral outrage. They've made a few games about literally killing God and there was no significant rage from anyone. It's uncanny, isn't it.
I hate to sound like a broken record of the thread, but yes Catherine and the persona franchise are barely a blip on the radar.
Consider Altus was touting Demon Souls as their best selling game ever, and even that is a more niche title.
Its a JRPG type game which is already a niche in and of itself, So your looking at a niche of a niche. Not going to register a lot of concern when even the largest portion of people who play games will have never heard of the game, much less the general public.
I know I had never heard of the franchise before Persona 3, and had it not been for one highly pissed off fanboy who wanted to make my life miserable because his copy had not yet come in, I doubt I would have known about the series before frequenting this forum. I think that is sort of indicative of the way most of the potential market look at this specific franchise.
Outrage will invariably be drawn to the most readily accessible and highly visible examples. Look at "Satanic rock" of the 1970s You had infinitely more people outraged at KISS a group that barely spoke about anything offensive compared to a group like Black Sabbath who actually referenced Satan in a few tracks. But large stadium shows and shiney glittery make up were much more visible and easier to target.

*Sigh* It's so awkward being that guy who is a Christian conservative who actually really enjoyed Catherine or games labeled as controversial like Mass Effect or Call of Duty, because BOTH parties think you are a raving lunatic.....I mean I know I am but come on. Can you give me some credit?
