I recently acquired myself a PS2, what games should I get for it?
I already have god of war 1& 2, as well as Kingdom hearts 1 & 2
the only genres, I'm not interested are racing and sports, anything else is fair game

If you like horror, Fatal Frame 2 and 3 are really brilliant games, as well as the Silent Hill series!
There's also Ratchet and Clank, and Jack and Daxter.
I also really recommend Katamari, it's extremely weird and kind of overly 'kawaii' but it's stupidly addictive.
OH and Final Fantasy X is pretty good as well!

I should keep a list like that.

- ICO and its "spiritual prequel" Shadow of the Colossus. Both look lovely and are heavy on exploring wide-open, free-roaming areas. The first is based on an escort mission and the latter on a sixteen-colossi boss rush.

- Everything developed by Clover Studios for Capcom. Viewtiful Joe , a 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up, Okami, a gorgeous Zelda-ish action adventure game and God Hand, a 3D beat 'em up with nostalgia value. All of these games look and play great and have original mechanics blending nicely with gameplay and storytelling.

- On a survival horror note I think Resident Evil and Silent Hill are obvious picks, both are very trustworthy serieses. SH2 and RE4 are the best on the PS2, in my opinion. Other great survival horror games are the Fatal Frame and Siren serieses; Haunting Ground, Cold Fear, Kuon, Rule of Rose... not all of them are as scary, but they've all got something of interest, I think.

- I think the GTA games are also an obvious pick. On the PS2 you have GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and all the "Stories" spin-offs. San Andreas remains the best-selling game on the PS2 (and I think in history, by default). Another amazing and curiously not very celebrated sandbox game is Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. Think GTA-meets-WAR.

- RPGs, you have Final Fantasy X (and its sequel, and XII) and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. KH is an action RPG, these are classy turn-based combat role playing games. Tales of the Abyss is more action-oriented with its battle system and has an amazing, well-knit story, unlike the typically convoluted Final Fantasy plot or the overly simplistic Dragon Quest. If you prefer strategy RPGs, Disgaa: Hour of Darkness is a good starting spot, too. On a similar note, I like to recommend anything developed by Atlus (Persona 4, a great RPG) and Vanillaware Ltd. (Odin Sphere, a 2D action RPG; and GrimGrimoire, a 2D RTS).

- Rounding up, here's some other games I love on the PS2: Killer7, Katamari Damacy, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (and sequels), Devil May Cry... the list goes on, really.

Happy gaming!

Aww... Beat me to it. Still though, get these games. You might have a harder time finding ICO however.

Also, Metal Gear Solid 3 (get the Subsistence version if you can, it has an extra camera option that allows you to rotate around your character.)

Ratchet and Clank series
Jak and Daxter series
We Love Katamari
Star Wars Battlefront series
Sly Cooper series
Barbie's Horse Adventure (just kidding)
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc

Those are all off the top of my head. I'm sure I'm missing a lot more than that.

Destroy all humans!

It's not a terribly great game, but it's fun as hell and funny as well. It's sort of like a 50s alien movie combined with saints row gameplay.

Shadow of the Collossus
Ratchet and Clank (any or even all of them)
Devil may cry
Final fantasy X
Star ocean 3: Till the end of time
Persona 3 (if you dont have the system for the other versions)
Persona 4 (if you dont have the system for Golden)
Dragon Quest 8
Area 51
Destroy all humans!

Thats all I can think off of the top of my head but Im sure theres a lot more I would recommend if I saw a huge games list for the PS2

Get Urban Reign. The best brawler in modern console history, and also the most tragically ignored.
Get all the Ratchet and Clanks.
Viewtiful Joe. Never played the sequel, but Viewtiful Joe is super fun.
Shinning Force Neo.
The Lord of The Rings - Two Towers and Return of the King. Solid games.
I enjoyed Rouge Galaxy.
Crimson Tears is a super hard game, but it's fun. Another brawler with RPG elements.
Of course ICO. I'd get that over Shadow of The Colossus. The ending of SotC was terrible.

Hitman : Blood Money- the best of the hitman series by far, and lots of replay value !

Canis Canem Edit (or Bully) : a fun variation on typical rockstar sandbox formula, which sends you back to school

Persona 3 FES : You hear about persona 3 and 4 a lot in these forums, and for good reason ! great jrpgs ! I have a soft spot for 3, but theyre both good. BUY NOW !

The Incredible Hulk : Ultimate Destruction : you can't go wrong, best hulk game I've played to date. Free roam smashing ? yes please !

Silent Hill 2 : Dont ask, Just get. I saw a copy in my local gamestop for ?3

The the usuals : FFX, Metal gear solid 2&3, Sotc etc

Timesplitters 2 and Timesplitters: Future Perfect were my favourite games. It are both local multiplayer shooters, play them with 4 friends and you'll have massive amounts of fun.

My personal favs:

FFX - I loved the story (though many will disagree with me on this), characters and battle system.
Okami - If you have PSN, it's worth it to buy the HD version, but if you ask me, this game has aged really well. One of the best adventure games ever.
Shadow Hearts: Covenant - a quirky Japanese RPG with a great battle system
Jak and Daxter series - Honestly, all of them are a lot of fun, but if you prefer platformer's I'd say go with the first one. The second one is more action adventure and is also very hard. I personally liked the third game the best and found it the most balanced of them all. Great gameplay, awesome humour.
Beyond Good and Evil - One of my favourite games of all time. Just go and play this asap.

I'm probably forgetting a lot of them, but this is off the top of my head.

Oh, shit. Just Remember.

Jaws: the game.

Yes, it's on several "worst game ever" lists, but it's bad in the "bad, it's good" way. It's ridiculous and fun. It's like a shark-based GTA.

PS2 can play PS1 games so I'd HIGHLY recommend Medievil 1 & 2 ^^
