Having finished the legend of heros on the psp, I find I cant decide which RPG to devote most of my free time to.

So I've decided to ask you guys what game out of these should I start pouring more time into?

List of games:
persona 4 (ps2)
valkyrie profile 2 silmeria (ps2)
zettai hero project (psp)
wild arms 3 (ps2)
legend of the dragoon (ps1)

Or i could play fallout new vegas but im not sure how close it is to being a rpg.

I have not played any of those so I'll go with Fallout: New Vegas, the only game you suggested I have played.

Fallout: New Vegas is the only one I've played, and I loved it.

And don't worry about it not being an RPG, it...is? I really have no idea what you mean by that.

Fallout New Vegas is a Western RPG, I don't know where you got the idea that it wasn't an RPG. Except for maybe the fact that you have a list of JRPGs, which are fundamentally different from WRPGs.

I personally am not a big fan of JRPGs, with certain exceptions, but if you go and play FONV, you should be prepared for an entirely different experience.

WRPGs typically give you a wider variety of choice in who you want your character to be. You do all the character customization. JRPGs give you customization of combat skills and gameplay mechanics/interactions. But each character has a defined set background story that is not customized at all by the player, and the story is typically very set in it's aspects.

Your list contains all JRPGs, which aren't really RPGs because most JRPGs have no role-playing in them, they are just adventure games with a combat system. Persona 4 might be the only JRPG on your list with actual role-playing in it. Fallout New Vegas is most definitely a RPG, Obsidian is one of the few developers that make real RPGs, ones with role-playing in them.

Excuse me but that statement seems to make no sense what so ever.
JRPG's have a fair number of wizardry spin offs, which are usually quite close to the origins of RPG's.
Instead you seem to determine whether or not it's a rpg if you're able to advance relationships with characters instead of them being set already.. (sounds like you want a dating sim instead)

As to the op, I've heard quite a bit of praise for Legend of the Dragoon so i'd go with that.

Well I've only played Fallout: New Vegas of those you've mentioned, and its really good so I suppose I'd advise that. Or Persona 4, I've heard that's good.

Look at reviews for the games and play the one with the highest rating, thats how I choose the games to play first when I play games of the previous generation consoles.

At what point does he mention anything about inter-character relationships? That was a slightly contrived criticism. More to the point I happen to agree with him, from my (note this) own experience, I've also found JRPGS to be more akin to adventure games because they often lack the same character construction as WRPGS. Often JRPGS already have the 'role' defined for you to play whereas more WRPGS start you off with something of a blank canvas.

As stated this is only in my personal experience, I am not defining either genre as specifically being one way or another so please feel free to cite examples that contradict what I know.

Persona 4! Go for it, you have the opportunity to play an apparently great game from what I've heard, don't waste it!

Or you could play New Vegas which is fun but a little slow in the story development department. Also you'll get shot... alot.

Awesome game, but still too much like Persona 3 (which could also be a good thing).

Mediocre game. Didn't like the combat system and didn't like the 2D movement restrictions.

Haven't played it.

Good opening, interesting setting, mediocre gameplay. Overall nothing special, but still good enough to play.

It has been a while since I have played this game. But I remember it to be pretty interesting. But also having some issues.

Overall... go with Persona 4.

Since when did I mention advancing relationships or dating? Persona 4 has some kind of relationship thing going on, but I've never played it so that's why I said it might have role-playing in it due to that mechanic. I mentioned Fallout New Vegas being a RPG, that's not dating sim in anyway. Obsidian also made Alpha Protocol, which is a RPG, that is not a dating sim. Mass Effect is a RPG and not a dating sim. When all the characters' dialog and decisions are scripted, it's not really a RPG.

I haven't even heard of nor played any of those except for New Vegas, so I Can't really make a suggestion. I also can't ever really see myself actually playing many JRGPs either. I love watching my brother play them, but I'm just not interested.

I'm rebuying FF9 today. :)

Another good choice would be Chrono Cross. It's a great RPG in which you choose your party members from a wide array of characters. It looks nice and the combat system is fun and dynamic. I'll get Suikoden and Xenogears, but I don't know much about these two yet.

the reason im was not sure on new vegas being a rpg is that there are as many people telling me its a rpg as there are people who call it a "fps with rpg mechanics" so I was a little confused.

JRPGs are RPGs. All actions (including preceived choices) are scripted - that argument is moot. Anyway, when one describes RPG elements, they aren't talking about choice, are they?

Go take your flame war elsewhere.
I wasn't flaming JRPGs, I was just classifying them as what they really are, which is adventure games with a combat system. Pen and paper RPGs started being called RPGs when role-playing was added into the games. The genre was called wargaming first and then called RPGs when actual role-playing was added. Platformers need platforming, shooters need shooting, and RPGs need role-playing, it's as simple as that.

You role play in every game, some just let you create your own role while others assign you one. RPGs are usually defined by a leveling system. Yes it's a badly named genre, like the jellyfish. No it's not actually a fish, but that it what it's called. Don't take it literally.

OP: I'd go with Persona 4.
