I should be doing work. Any kind of work. Probably maths but just extra work for any of my A-Levels. I can never find myself the motivation though so I only ever do stuff I'm set.

Wrapping Christmas presents.
Joining a gym.

But, assuming that your description is accurate...
Tube would have a longest side of 51.75, with the ends making a 5.25 square.
5.25 x 51.75 = 271.6875 (area of each side) = xy
5.25 x 51.75 x 5.25 = 1426.359375 (total volume) = xyz
That's also assuming a zero width piece of metal. Now go tell your tutor that the puzzle is impossible without it being 6 sides that need to be cut
You can't. A box needs a bottom and a lid. That's a tube you've described, which inherently has no volume, as there's no containment.necromanzer52 said:

So if your're trying to find the size of the square you have to cut out to make the largest volume, and assuming we're talking about an open top box.necromanzer52 said:

Then find the derivative and solve for when it equals zero
I get 14/3 and 21
We can ignore 21 as that would leave us with a width of zero. So put 14/3 into the original volume equation to find which is the maximum volume.
So my answer would be 68600/27 or approximately 2540.740
That's how I remember doing that type of question in high school.
