Let's say we send a probe into deep space, looking for sentient life. You can pick one song that will communicate all of mankind's triumphs and flaws, something which encapsulates our basic psychology. What song would you choose?

Here's my vote.

Mostly as a warning. It would definitely get their attention.

EDIT: If you think I'm being pessimistic, keep in mind they probably wouldn't get the message until we're all dead. I think this makes a nice eulogy.

I'd just like to point out that 9 minute songs are ass to sing, especially when you're going for 5 stars.
Also, I'd have to say...The Godfather theme.
"What?" you say, "How the hell can a song with no lyrics describe humanity"?
It just gives a sense of a sort of sad, but somewhat hopeful, slow moving end feeling.

Because it's the end of our world as we know it, and I feel fine.

Just so awesome. Varying in intensity and volume, while always keeping a distinctive beat; parts repeated, history ever repeating. About sums it up for me.

Deep space?

Monkeys make me lol. De-meated, indeed.

Also, the Godfather theme is surprising, but still somehow fitting. I'm waiting for someone to say Still Alive. Or I Like Big Butts.

EDIT: Yep, both came true. Except instead of Sir Mixalot, we get some kind of audio AIDS involving cows.

Probably Very ape or Mr. Moustache by Nirvana. In case you didn't realize, I not too fond of humanity.

lux aeterna, the theme to requiem for a dream, music without lyrics translate to any language, so hopefully the sentient lifeforms hear the same as us.

I thought about the word Vicarious and indeed that song the moment I read the title before clicking, but I was going to say that it wasn't appropriate for all of humanity; It's much more of a "developed country" thing, because you see, I don't figure those people in Haiti or Chile are sitting in front of their TVs enjoying the suffering of others. Nor do I see most of the world's population (and thus humanity) do the same, seeing as they're mostly very poor and suffering themselves.
I believe it's merely a question of opportunity. If the tables were turned, I think the disenfranchised people of the world would behave the same way we do.
