Let's say we send a probe into deep space, looking for sentient life. You can pick one song that will communicate all of mankind's triumphs and flaws, something which encapsulates our basic psychology. What song would you choose?

Here's my vote.

Mostly as a warning. It would definitely get their attention.

EDIT: If you think I'm being pessimistic, keep in mind they probably wouldn't get the message until we're all dead. I think this makes a nice eulogy.
This song

because that's what we are

"The Whale" By Electric Light Orchestra.

The song was written by Jeff Lynne after watching a documentary about the killing of Whales.

You can listen to it and get some kind of emotion out of it.

Dahmer got fifteen
life sentences today
I'm visiting friends
in the hospital
too much fear
too little life for much
too long and all the traffic
of the windshields filled with needy
and greedy eyes someone placed
a rose on the sidewalk
for St. Monica see the shabby man in the park
drop a sleeping bag like it was
his dead soul

see the cadillac lady
see the skateboard boy
see the man hold the crinkled cardboard

sign will work for food
please the lady steps out of her sports club
in her pink sports clothes
handing her valet ticket to the valet
there's one man on each bus stop
bench one with a bridled retriever
for eyes one with a shabby t-shirt
that reads where exactly are we.

Fuck the World by ICP

:p

OT: The song I Never Wanted by As I Lay Dying because it talks about how people place these unreal expectations upon each other and how you shouldn't waste away your life trying to make other people happy, do what makes you happy...sadly most of the world wouldn't listen as they are ass kissing people pleasers that know that they are true shit on the inside and have to kiss the ass and be accepted by everyone in order to temporarily assuage the feelings of disgust they have for themselves.

PS> Yeah, i am a cold, calculated, logical, cynical, callous bastard...if u don't like it, kindly fuck off and die

This is an easy one- "We didn't start the Fire" by Billy Joel.

I forgot the artist, but I heard a hotel lobby jazz version of a song called People = Shit.

I thought it was hilarious.

Damn Humans...
It was originally by Slipknot. A jazz version of that song would indeed be amusing, but the song itself seems fitting for this thread.

How about "The Planets" suite? If forced to pick one, I'll go with Jupiter.

If you're looking for something more "pop-culture", how about "Don't Shoot (I'm a Man)" by Devo.

I'll say Tribute by Tenacious D. That way, they have to come here to find the greatest song in the world, and we get to meet aliens.

You are ALL wrong. The only viable option is Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas.

We need the voice of our generation, the greatest human ever, to be our ambassador.

Either: Hatredy.
Or: Briefcase full of guts
