In a utopian future, because there are far too many games with dystopian future settings, I think it would be a nice change of pace.
What would you do in an utopian world? Go around, greeting people, doing the job you love and smiling at everyone you see?
Sounds like a publicity stunt for Dante's Infern-...wait a minute.

The mid 18th century. Mainly because that was the time of the 7 Years' War that ended with Great Britain as the chief colonial empire.

I would make an RPG set in Hell. The main "city" could be in the first level (limbo) and you would have to progree farther and farther into Hell. I'm going by Divine Comedy logic here.
so... like dante's inferno, but more so in-line with the book

Dinosaurs with lazers attached to them, fighting ninjas that are fighting aliens on flying pirate ships powered by steam.

Why no, this could never work as a game! No one would ever want to play the ordinary life of a simulated person in a carefree environment, what a silly idea!

OP: Depends upon the genre, for a shooter, future is always fun since you can invent stupid weaponry; for an RPG, the late days of the Roman Republic might be fun, you are Julius Caesar returned from the dead, and you hunt down all of those back-stabbers - no? never mind; for RTS quite the same, Praetorians and Rome: TW were fun, always preferred those over games set after the invention of gunpowder.

But then everybody would call it a rip off of such and such. And won't give it a fair chance. All the reviews will sound they same and no one will formulate there own opnion about it. It'll be a pretty solid game but no one will buy it because all the trash talking everyone has given in for being a rip off even though it 10x better and solid then most other rip offs. Poor Poor game.

Then there will be the ones that get mad that's it's not an exact copy of the Divine Comedy. Even know they have never read it.

*sigh* wrong game again *sigh*

Sounds pretty good but a JRPG or western RPG?

I'd make a game set during the Northern Irish troubles, that being 1969-1998.

You could play as the IRA, the British Army, the RUC, or the Loyalists.

That's copyrighted, by the way. I do plan to make this game.
yes because you can lay claim to historical events...

Anyway, I would make mine in 19th century australia. I think it'd be a winner.

If you where going to make a game set in one particular time period what would you choose?
During the Stone Age. You'd be given your objectives through pictures, then go and beat whatever it is with a club and drag it back home to mate with it.

But seriously, keep the wall paintings (which let the player be a bit more flexible with their objectives) then have them evolve and gain new weapon, tools, techniques and technologies to reach civilization, where the game ends. Think Spore, but it stops at the civilization stage and isn't as inconsistent in play.

My pants.

/thread

Sorry, had to do that.

Anyways! Mmm? I'd say during the Viking eras. Either as a Viking or as one of the hapless villagers to fight them off.

Or if future, you're on a space station that's slowly going into a black hole and you must find a way to save yourself (Or the station, your choice). Clowns and nick-knacks included.

Yes.

And? What more do you want in a game? Action? combat? Excitement? Well, Michael Atkinson disagrees. I bet you he'd love my idea.
So it's like the blink-button from Alone in the Dark only extended... I think that could get your game r-rated, because bodily functions are disgusting and the underaged shouldn't know about them until it is absolutely necessary!

And OT: why not a stone-age game? "hunter-gatherer 3 - revenge of the mammoth" or something.
But if it should be playable I suppose my game would take place in the napoleon war-era.
