SOPA will change nothing for the Deep Web. On the contrary - it might even encourage more people to become a part of it. The only ones who'll be affected by this bill will be legitimate sites, which, as sad as it is, is not enough to bring down an entire digital nation. We'll have them back, and everything will go back to the way it was; and this pathetic excuse of a bill will fail, just like the pacemakers of these old, stagnant congressmen, who know absolutely nothing of the new world, and the coming age.

I'm sure someone already said this, but SOPA won't block non-American Internet users. It will just block US users from visiting certain sites. The problem with that is the screening process involved in blocking just US users will probably create massive Internet traffic jams.
That's one of the ways it may "break the internet."

But they may only use the power of SOPA on websites that are or partly meant for US citizens.

And the only thing they can do to websites outside the US is blacklist them. In essence, you've just made their enforcement all the easier and the transition to a SOPA internet smooth and even a little bit practical.

In short, your response to a bill that "breaks the internet" is to break it FOR THEM.

i think i understand sopa differently from you. as far as they know, its just american isp's that stop the dns from aquiring the site for you.. if you live in america. but you can still dodge it DOS style by pinging the site, getting its ip, and then putting the ip in your browser

Certainly, blocking 'things' on the web for specific countries is a thing that happens right now (I'm German - Ever heard of GEMA?) which is not good, but when the law is meant for the singularity of USA only I don't see a way of sueing the goverment internationally (which is obvious). It's unjust aswell and I will sign any petition and do the things in my might to stop it, but it makes the case quite harder to solve. (Petitions & Actions against GEMA are old as GEMA itself... god... they're charging kindergardens and schools for singing copyrighted christmas songs in primary classes).

I think the answer is clearly "no."

If anything, the UK kid example demonstrates that they don't need SOPA to go after foreign sites.

But realistically, that example has nothing to do with SOPA or its effects one way or the other. Yes, it's bad. Yes, it's dumb. SOPA doesn't change either of those factors in any way, neither helping or hindering them.

Is SOPA good? No. Does it help to argue against things it doesn't do or argue such things already happening as instances of what it COULD do? Also no.

I'm Canadian, so at least I'll have Canadian websites. I'll just migrate to the Deep Web, I already participate in a pretty good forums there. Sure, it's small, but if SOPA does pass, a lot of idiotic kids are going to be flooding the Deep Web, and that will ruin the whole thing.

nice little thing to know: they CANT take sites down. EVER. unless the servers are in the USA and they physically burn the server house down XD. ( remove the plug, cut the power, you know the drill )
if they did they people would just put their servers in the philipines, on offshore custom islands etc. (europa, asia, posibly australia if they put some propper cables down to there XD ) all they can do is force that guys that tell your computer where it has to go, not to tell you. XD its a bit like asking a passerby in s strange town where the shops are. he wont tell you, the next guy will. so screw the first guy :3

Well for us U.S. citizens who are getting the 14 in. shaft if sopa hits is to info/video/porn hoard as much as possible before any effect can take place, info through internet may be blocked but that wont prevent old fashioned hardware delivery from person to person

To be honest, I'm probably both.

However, I heard that there is a major hole in the SOPA plan(something about still being able to access a blocked website if you have the IP address). If it is flawed, I would not support it, but if it's passed, I won't speak out against it.

No offense intended friend, but I implore you to think of your founding fathers (I am assuming your speaking as an American?) for a moment.
I'm from the UK here, but I've got nothing but he highest respect for what America originally stood for. It would be a shame for a citizen to just give up an not care about that dream.
And if not for a bunch of dead old guys, please think of your fellow country men. You've got a respectability to defend your civil liberties, because they don't just belong to you, but everyone. And it'll take everyone to save them.

I actually found a list of different IP adress for the servers of different websites, so I could still probably connect to pirating website (not like I'd use them though). Also, pirate ALWAYS find a way, you can use SOPA to nuke them back to the '90s, but they'll still recover.
The escapist might look alittle different, however.

Presumably Anonymous has a field day and destroys every single company that supported this, in a series of endless onslaughts. The entire Internet gets up in arms, pickets the Capitol until they all get arrested Occupy-style, turns in their Internet subscriptions so the ISPs lose craptons of money, and we end up wrecking the tech economy until said companies start crying about it.

They wouldn't be likely to take on the government directly, they would however likely do their level best to convey the easy routes around such problems (DNS addresses instead for example).

It's a pathetically dumb law, if it passes most companies will simply leave the States and take their business elsewhere, it's not a difficult thing for an internet based company to do. Further it's easy to work around and practically speaking it's extremely difficult to catch people doing such a thing.

But yeah, I would expect several plug-ins/extensions to be up within a day of it starting...failing that simply spreading the word and supporting the sites which let you go straight to DNS with a search.

I don't know how this is going to go down but I very much doubt if any mass IP blocking will happen... because that's be stupid, and I doubt if the DNA service is going to change because it doesn't seem like a politically charged group. This plan doesn't seem like the right approach and sounds more like a child throwing a tantrum to me.


Also, isn't the Escapist in the Us meaning that all you international dudes and dudettes would be gone under this plan?
