I'm one of the few that liked the original ending. I did a thread about it on here years ago: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.407990-End-of-Evangelion-vs-original-ending-to-Neon-Genesis

I do admit they ran out of ink though - lol.

EDIT: Also, I don;t know why cousin incest is so big in these animes, creeps me the fuck out. Please just stop.
I've wondered before what motivates anime/manga creators to bring up this very touchy subject to fans. It really creeps me out too when I see it, but maybe it's just because I'm from the west. It's not just cousin incest either - it happens on a lower level with siblings as well. It could be a few things - because of how Japan views gender and sexuality maybe? Or because certain creators have 'sibling/parent/family complexes' and it's a way to project their thoughts without suffering serious repercussions? For example, Japanese mothers apparently had an unhealthy, psychological obsession with their sons back in the 1980s and 1990s.

Another thing to note is the low birth-rate of Japan. You have to wonder if certain creators have any siblings or extended family at all. They may wonder what it was like to have a sibling or extended family members so they decide to create the 'perfect sibling' in their stories to satisfy their own psychological needs. Maybe it's also for shock value - adding incest to shojo stories generates an even greater emotional response. In essence, it causes controversy and gets eyeballs drawn to the stories. Creators might be doing this because they want attention.

Also, for a country that seems to be very traditional, Japan is very open-minded when it comes to sexuality. Japan is pretty comfortable with it because they do not necessarily believe in what we accept as religious morals & ideals. It is accepted, by the Japanese, that Japan was 'procreated' by the union of heaven & earth. The union birthed two gods, Izanagi & Izanami, who wed each other & mated to create the country of Japan & human life there. So, basically, Japan exists because of incest. Sex in Japan is viewed as a celebration of the beginning of life. It is supposed to be happy and loving. There is also a Japanese legend that states that star-crossed lovers are sometimes reborn as siblings.

Another thing is that older siblings (or other older family members) have this inner desire to guide their little siblings properly, because the younger ones greatly admire & look up to them. These factors can create a very intimate relationship. Creators probably want to address the possibility of what happens when developmental psychology goes wrong. How intimate should siblings be when they're around each other?

Regarding gender roles in Japan, women are supposed to be housewives, caretakers, and soft-spoken while men are the go-getters, high income-earners, & aggressive. Combine that with Japan's views on sexuality and you have a recipe for psychological conflict within the self and the family, and creators probably try and address this in anime.

Another interesting thing to point out is that incest is noted to be an act of narcissism. Your relationship with a relative is a means to please yourself. Your partner is treated as an object, so to speak. You lack any empathy whatsoever towards them. You want to control & dominate that person. Perhaps some creators want to point out the control aspect of incest.

Ultimately, I believe Japan is a very sexual country and that won't change any time soon. Plus, Japanese audiences know that anime and manga are entirely fiction. They don't confuse fantasy with reality. Although you may argue that Japan lacks certain morals, it's not as if all the incest-related content over there is fan service or pornographic. People have many curious fascinations and there are things out there that are probably worse than incest.

Ghibli only because their movies get high quality Finnish dubs. Also their artistic integrity has been mostly impervious (Earthsea was a mistake).

From a Western point of view that's one of the poorest excuses this generation has come up with. "It's just fiction, mom. I know my waifu is not real! I just wish she was and fantasize about her every day. And no, mom, I'm not saving for a dakimakura pillow, I already got 3." Decadent fantasies always win over the doldrums of real life, and we know embracing that fact can lead to an unfortunate fate (Japanese shut-ins etc.).

Mostly anime that does not indulge in gratuitous fan service, waifu baiting crap, lolis, typical anime tropes or other stuff.

Recently I have found myself liking Garo: Vanishing Line a lot, mainly because it keeps its fan service in check, doesn't have a loli character and the art style is reminiscent of older anime, not as clean as a lot of modern digital works. Granted, there is a little 3D work in it, but it's mostly very decent 2D.

Sort of a different point to the one I was making about the possible reasons why creators put incest in Japanese anime... but if you want to get it off your chest I guess. WTF is a waifu?

My favorites are the kind that don't look or feel like your typical anime. Like Crayon Shin-Chan, World Fool News and Aggressive Retsuko.

Hmm, let's see if I can compile a list of all the anime/cartoons I've seen over the last few years;

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Sword Art Online
Log Horizon
Gate
Steinsgate
Fairy Tale
Death Note
A Certain Magical Index
A Certain Scientific Railgun (I preferred this more than Index)
Akame Ga Kill (Ultra depressing towards the end)
Soul Eater (unfinished)
Inuyasha (Gave up on early)
.Hack//Sign (Finished, but can't say I enjoyed honestly)
Cowboy Bebop
Fate/Stay: Night (Original series, Zero and Ultimate Blade Works)
Fullmetal Alchemist
Digimon 1-4 (Never finished the fourth series, still need to watch Tri)
RWBY (I know it's not strictly anime, but it's close enough and one of my favourite shows ever, so shut up!)
Attack on Titan
Code Lyoko (again, not anime, but still pretty deece)
Izzeta the Last Witch
No Game No Life
Bleach (Like Inuyasha, I gave up on early. I don't get the hype honestly)
Aldnoah Zero
Ghost in the Shell
Avatar; The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra (see RWBY above)
Spice and Wolf

At some point I should probably look into things like Re:zero, Overlord, One Punch Man, Hellsing,Hunter X Hunter, Baccano, Code Geas (I did watch the first episode, but fell asleep cos it was late, so should really have another go), Gurren Legann and probably a bunch of others I can't remember right now. I should probably make a list...

Tend to stick to calmer, happier/lighter stuff like slice of life or comedies, romance, and, yes, ecchi, with a sprinkling of heavier action and dramatic titles thrown in.

I watch for entertainment. Not to be (more) depressed or have my heart ripped out.

Spice and Wolf
Toradora!
Black Lagoon
Youjo Senki
Lucky Star
FMA:Brotherhood
Strike Witches
Konosuba
K-On
Bleach (Soul Society arc was good.)

Are some favorites.

I have two modes. Anime Snob, only the best, deepest story, best animation, S tier anime.

...And holy fuck do I want to watch some actual trash, fanservice, the worst most laughable horribly animated cartoons japan and/or China has to offer me. Entertain me please, I want to know just how deep this rabbit hole of despair goes.

No in betweens.

Well not types but there are a lot of things I look for in an anime

Interesting Designs and an Ensemble cast.
If I'm going to look at a bunch of people for a number of episodes then they have to have diverse and interesting designs and bland brown hair anime protag is a huge turn off for me.
Basically yes to this

Huuuuge no to this

Shonen anime that fully focus on their themes and ideas, I know most people say shows like Hunter X Hunter, One Piece and a My hero academia only picked the concept of Hunters, Pirates, and heroes because it sounds cool however they do go into the concept of what ideals follow the archetypes. Hunter X Hunter shows the survival of the fittest mentality, One Piece places greater aspect on adventure and freedom, and My Hero Academia shows what it means to be a hero.
The concept of Morality, again the reason why I love Hunter X Hunter so much and FMA is that you have not only a world full of greys but people who follow their own alien morality. A good example to this is Kimblee from FMA where he has a conversation with Al about the law of equivalent exchange or Gon and how he sees the world in a bizarre way.
A sense of adventure, what made Space Dandy and Made in abyss so interesting for me is the different worlds you see the characters explore for the former it was somewhat light hearted and for the latter it was dark and dangerous

I'll give any type of anime ago tbh, I'm much more forgiving of anime than live action shows/films.

Shows I reccomend to try would be:
Steins;gate - Dub is decent, it also has a follow up film thats also dubbed and worth checking out.

Black lagoon - Also has a decent Dub, has alot of action, if guns and explosions is your thing.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica - Sub only I think, it blew up a couple years ago as a deconstruction of the magical girl genre

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne - Probably the most mature one on the list, Its a 6 episode OVA with a decent Dub. Each episode is set in a different time period around 2 girls which are immortal and run a consulting agency, which usualy leads them to male demons and well,.. lets just say it has sex and violence, it's not hentai but it's close.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When they cry) - Defently my favorite anime, the Dub is aweful so stick with the Subs.
One minute its a slice of life moe anime then flips to horror and mystery.
It has 3 series, the first two consists of a standard 24-26 episodes and the last only 5.
Plenty to keep you occupied and guessing whats happening as you only see one side of the story to begin with because the show is broken up into "question arcs" and "answer arcs". Defently worth checking out.

Fight Ippatsu! Juuden-chan!! Only watched subbed, I'd imagen any kind of Dub would be bad has it is a very Ecchi show, from the creater of KissxSis so you kind of get an idea of what your getting into, just with less incest.

Yuru Yuri Slice of life, moe blobs, with a hint of yuri.

Other decent slice of life moe blob shows:
Non Non Biyori
Non Non Biyori Repeat
Is the order a rabbit
Is the order a rabbit (season 2)

I'm not going to bother making a huge list, but Tatami Galaxy and Fooly Cooly are my favorites. Tatami doesn't get nearly as much love as it should, and I'm hoping Devilman Crybaby's success gets it more views. (It's the same director.)

Hmmm... Out of the anime things i have watched/liked/remembered there's:

There can be only one.

And then there's Black Lagoon, Ghost in the Shell, Ergo Proxy, Psycho Pass was decent, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure... out of older(and/or longer series) there's Dragonball, which is kinda its own thing at this point. What else... Oh! Cromartie High - that was something else. Now, from that point i'd have to dig really deep... I member original Pokemon stuff, because everyone else was watching it at the time(similar to Dragon Ball, but that one passed the test of time better for me). Other than that some real fossils like original Sailor Moon, Yattaman, or Saint Seiya.
(Do Moomin or Cities of Gold count as anime?)

Then there are full features: Almost everything Ghibli, Akira, Ghost in the Shell movie, and Paprika(really need to pull Satoshi Kon from my shame list).

So yeah, i'm behind when it comes to new(er), or less mainstream productions.
Possibly, i'll be making a backlog, but for now i just wait for Vento Aureo...
The Simpsons season 2-9 without a doubt. There's still alot to like about seasons 10 and 11 too.
I occasionally watch Family Guy. I thought it was good from seasons 3-6, but I found it to be of poor quality after that.

Currently watching Dragonball/Z/Super and Pop Team Epic.

Favs from the past include Cowboy Bebop, Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, Big O, Record of Lodoss War, Ghost in the Shell, Slayer's, Trigun, Patlabor, Tenchi Muyo, Inuyasha, Sailor Moon, etc. Spice and Wolfks first season was good, but I never got around to the second. Excel Saga was a great send up too.

Do wish Vampire Hunter D got more movies. The first one was a faithful adaptation, but Bloodlust heavily improves on its equivalent novel and I'd like them to continue that trend.

I don't watch that much anime these days, but personal favorites include anything that Satoshi Kon or Gen Urobuchi worked on. Yeah, that about sums it up.

From Kon, there's Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Paranoia Agent, Tokyo Godfathers, Paprika (which is one of my all-time favorite movies, to boot). And hopefully someday Madhouse will actually finish The Dream Machine, which was incomplete when Kon died.

Urobuchi is responsible for Fate/Zero, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Psycho-Pass, Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet, Expelled From Paradise, Blassreiter, Aldnoah.Zero, and it's not an anime, but Kamen Rider Gaim.

In both cases, there's just a certain quality to their work that I can't really quantify but that appeals to me greatly.

I'm also a fan of Fullmetal Alchemist. I like both shows a lot, but I'm one of those weird people who slightly prefer the 2003 series over Brotherhood.

I have a tendency toward action with a good story. Cowboy Bebop, Psycho Pass, Gungrave, Trigun... In Bebop and Trigun's case I really do like series that can mix in lighter moments and aren't just grimdark angsty slogs.

Right there with ya on all of those. Magica Madoka... I did love it, but it was perhaps too bleak. It actually drove me to watching a season and a half of MLP (when previously I had only seen about the first 6 episode just so I could understand the memes here.)

My favourites are the older, pre-digital stuff, where you could feel the hand crafted artistry.

If you want to get into some of the more creative anime, watch movies like Memories, Robot Carnival, and Neo Tokyo Labyrinth. And if you want the really weird shit, there's A Tree of Palme, and Angel's Egg.

You can sample some of the 80's trash, like Wicked City and Demon City Shinjuku. There's the OVA series 3x3 Eyes, which is also kinda trashy, but thoroughly entertaining nonetheless. And ofcourse Guyver.

Watch Ninja Scroll is you want one of the best, no-nonsense action movies in the anime medium. It's basically Metal Gear Solid in feudal Japan. Spriggan is a nice, if somewhat vapid, action movie, too

Oh, and try to track down the movie version of Macross Plus. Pretty much Cowboy Bebop before Cowboy Bebop, as it was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe and the music provided by Yoko Kanna.
Ugghh, Wicked City. That movie turned me off of anime for a couple of years. It was the first exposure to the genre I saw, It wasn't until a friend finally convinced me that not all anime was so "tentacle rapey" that I actually gave it a shot again.

But since you like the pre-digital stuff, did you ever watch Blue Seed? I seem to be one of the few that enjoyed it. The flaws were pretty hard to overlook. The leads were teenagers and some of the most stupid and annoying characters in anime history... but I enjoyed it for the supporting cast (that had surprising depth and screen time) and its use of Japanese folklore. And its Omake Theater shorts.

Overall on anime I completely avoid neverending series (Dragonball, One Piece, basically anything with over 100 episodes.) A story isn't complete until it ENDS. You can't tell a proper story unless you know how its going to end, when you START writing it.

I used to completely avoid anything involving High School or harem... but have made some exceptions over the years and now generally enjoy comedy as well as action. I like the Tenchi series, it mixes harem into a decent story with an interesting mythology. And you still get space battles and giant mechs. I liked Okami-San and Her 7 Companions, Baka and Test, No Rin, and Ben-To; even though they were high school centric. And even though I gave up on it initially, I actually wound up finishing and even enjoying Kaijo... because I found it walked the tightrope of being self-aware without just actually BEING the thing you are parodying.
