Have a read of this BBC news article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7901565.stm

For those disinclined to read the article a female prison officer was found to have sent saucy text messages and started an intimate relationship with one of the inmates she works with. She was found to be in possession of heroin and cannabis which allegedly she was smuggling in for him.

She has lost her job, her work mates, pension contributions and, if found guilty, will serve a lengthy prison sentence. She will not have a good time in prison as an ex officer. I doubt staff or inmates will give her an easy ride.

He cant be that much of a catch being in prison and desperate for heroin. Was she expecting hed get out and theyd live happily ever after?

Why is it always female staff that do this sort of thing? There are plenty of women who work with offenders and do an excellent job but when someone loses there job for inapprpriate relationships with prisoners it always seems to be a woman.

Any thoughts?

Love makes you do stupid shit.

EDIT: How the fuck did he receive these text messages?
Please tell me we're not giving them phones now.
Max, it's OK for you guys since you now have a decent President. We, on the other hand, live in a country where inmates in Broadmoor (very high security mental hospital for peadophiles and serial killers) are given DVD players and games consoles, and I read in my student newspaper today that the most prolific serial killer in recent UK history is potentially up for parole. This hardly seems surprising to me...

Mobiles (Americans call them cells) are contraband in prisons but theyre not unheard of. With smaller mobiles people can "plug" -hide them in body cavities- them. Prisoners smuggle all sorts of things in. I wouldnt be surprised if it came in via the officer though.

We are going to let prisoners out at some point. Best try treating them like human beings and hoping they can be reformed, rather than making them even more brutal and violent. Believe me when I say that a lot of prisoners can learn and build a better life for themselves and others when they are given the help they need.

As for this particular case... as Max observed, people in love do some really strange things. He might also have been a real looker from her point of view? Let gentlemen who would not exchange text messages with this lady [http://www.meet-an-inmate.com/ladies/kari-10436.htm] cast the first stone. :p

The phone was probably smuggled in using one of the classic method via a cake or a kiss, unless old TV programs and films are lying to me again...

please... a pedophile will only get like 3-12 months in jail...(i think) i don't believe that they will "change their ways" in that amount of time. To be honest the justice system in the UK is messed up.

don't forget "love is blind"

Paedophilia, unlike something like stealing, needs serious psychotherapy and counselling to rehabillitate someone, if they can be rehabilitated at all, I don't know of any success stories in this category.

I don't think prisoners should be treated cruelly but removing mod cons like mobile phones, game consoles etc is cruel, your LIBERTY IS RECINDED you have commited a crime and it is a PUNISHMENT!

Excatly. We give our prisoners HDTV's and PS3's and sky in their cells. They don't have to go to court because they don't want to lose their comfy cells. It's human right gone mad. Giving them phones wouldn't surprise me at all

Pedophiles get prison sentences dependent on the seriousness if their crime. They are not one size fits all. a few things considered are was he (can be she but ill keep ssaying he) abusing a position of trust/authority? Was violence involved? Was it touching or penetration, length of abuse? Was it internet images/films or contact with an actual child? Was it incest?

I could go on and on but pedophiles can get lengthy sentences then a prolonged period of supervision upon release.

as far as changing there ways, there are studies showing that offence focused work, such as the sex offeender treatment program, is linked to a reduction in further offending.

Can they be "cured"? Its not for me to say.

Yeah, she must have been in love, to risk her job like that. However, if she gets out and he gets out, and they find each other, they'll just have another thing in common. Making the love between them even more stronger (sarcasm?)

Well if you can get a phone in a UK jail, then if I ever went to jail, I think I would commit a crime in the UK.

You know what's funny? A priest at my school told me a history of a hobo that kept commiting petty crimes just to get into a prison. Because he had it better there than outside.

True. The only bad thing they have is that they can't go out of prison. Other than that, they can contact with the outside world, talk to people, enjoy life...

What a rip-off.

Actually that is not uncommon, the homeless will often do that and so will people that have been released after very long sentences because they can't reintegrate themselves back into society. They are not used to doing things for themselves or freedom.

That's what I'm wondering. That must've been one loose prison.

I know it's hard to believe and scary, but in some prisons they allow the usage of cellphones...

Isn't that what happened when Harley Quinn first met The Joker?
Nah, she was driven insane after trying to treat The Joker for his delightful insanity, then they "teamed" up.
