Pokemon aside, it was Escaflowne. Fox Kids went through a weird stage, putting that up.

For me Robotech was the my first. My father had invited some of his friends over to watch a bunch of episodes he had recorded to tape. I still remember shyly watching from behind his chair.

And while I do watch a good amount of anime, I've never seen more than a few episodes of DBZ, Evaganalon, or Gundam.

Pokemon, obviously! Or DBZ [sub]in private[/sub]. Although I didn't know what anime was back then.
When I became aware of it, the first one I watched was Chobits.

Other than the ones I watched as a kid (Pokemon, Dragon Ball Z, Yu Gi Oh, Digimon, etc).

The first anime I watched was Death Note, after deciding to check it out due to hearing about it so much. Although the last half of the series left a lot to be desired, I enjoyed it enough to get me hooked to the medium.

Shakugan no Shana, I think. All I remember is melon bread. And red hair. And more melon bread. Although I did watch Pokemon before that, but I'd rather not remember that.

Urotsukidoji. Legend of the Demon Womb. I wasn't overly impressed but then I got Battle Angel Alita and The Guyver and I was hooked.
That was back when Manga was awesome with epic titles like Akira, Ninja Scroll, Appleseed and Ghost in the Shell. Now I don't watch anime as I find the majority childish drivel with some exceptions like Appleseed Ex Machina and similar types.

I believe my first anime, way before I knew what anime was or what Japan was, for that matter, was the Ultraman anime. Formulaic as hell, but I enjoyed it thoroughly every day after kindergarten... Formulaic, that is, until the main character died and went to some Ultraman heaven o.o That changed my life a bit.

Afterwards... Dragonball, Dragonball Z, Rurouni Kenshin, Digimon, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Detective Conan, The Kickers... basically the whole RTL2 lineup, even though I hardly understood any German. :) First one I watched intentionally, stuff on TV aside, would have to be Street Fighter 2: The Animated Movie. That changed my life, man. Watch it, if you have the opportunity and enjoy yourself some good, fun martial arts action. :)

Also (and this is the only time I've said this about any anime), avoid the original dub. The music is far, FAR superior in the English dub, trust me. Unless you're into techno/J-pop during your hardcore fight scenes.
