Yup, definately Goldeneye. I also loved Doom on the PS1 when that was released as I played it for 8 hours non stop

Quake 2 on the Playstation was the first to have twin stick controls (without having to use two awkward ungainly controllers).

Halo was the first to solve the problem of item management without a keyboard full of hotkeys and have a control system that worked without fiddly aim modification (like Timesplitters), and have a full range of multiplayer options, including LAN support, and so that was really the first game to "do it right".

Goldeneye introduced the winning formula, then Perfect Dark, well, perfected it. I'll never forget the amount of fun that I had with both of those games.

As for the folks that are saying Halo, fair play, but it was actually released after Goldeneye. Halo was also a console exclusive for around two years, I think, until the PC release.

duck hunt, its a real FPS
I was gonna say Halo, but then I read this post. Duck Hunt was the first FPS wasn't it?
It was, but it was also bloody awful...

OT:

I am ashamed to admit I never played Goldeneye. I just wasn't into shooters when it came out.
I will admit, the story was god awful and the characters weren't relatable.(Damn you laughing dog) I'll just say Halo since I've never played Goldeneye

Oh how I wished you could shoot the dog in the face... it's bad enough the gun didn't work all that well, they had to have that mutt taunting you over your aim...

Maybe the gun did work. Maybe I just sucked.

Goldeneye.

I really don't think there's much of a contest.

Wait, wait, wait. Killing Time on 3D0 was pretty damn excellent and it came out before Goldeneye. Not that Goldeneye was bad, it was really good, just not first.

Edit: Killing Time when it first came out was console exclusive, but it went to pc like 3 years later or something, pretty much as soon as 3D0 tanked.

What about Red Faction 1? While I don't necessarily think that it was "The first to do it right." Red Faction 1 was innovative in its own way. And of course innovative as in the first FPS (I can think of for a console) with user controllable constantly allowed environment destruction. (In short, Geo-Mod.)

Sorry to openly flaunt my nubbishness and lack of knowledge to this forum. But, what is the "5th generation?"

Ah. Gotcha. But yeah, the 5th generation games being long makes me miss ye olden days of gaming. I'm tired of beating these newer titles in faffing (I don't know the profanity rules for the forum, should probably look it up.) 4-7 hours. The only recent game I've absolutely loved for it's length was Dragon Age: Origins. (130 hours in and haven't beaten in. On 4 different characters.) So Goldeneye and Perfect Dark being long was perfect for being what they were. (I get the feeling this rant should have been placed somewhere else.)

EDIT: 4 different characters, each with 130 hours.

In my opinion there can't be a good console FPS, because any controller besides keyboard and mouse are just awful for that.

This seems like its doomed to be an opinion thread...because really..your veiw of "doing an FPS right" could be totally different from someone elses. Therefore there is no "right" way to make an FPS. example, I love the Rainbow Six games much more than I love halo...I enjoy the challenge and the overall experience. Many people on the contrary dont like the Rainbow Six games because you die so fast so they feel it takes away the point of a game. Both are reasonable statements and in the end is only your opinion.
