i was thinking, apart from the amusing town massacres and blowing up megaton there wasn't
much point being bad in fallout 3, being good you can have fawkes, star paladin cross and i think a3 21's plasma rifle you have to be good to get, but being bad the best you can get is callahans magnum and thats all i can think of i might be being totaly ignorant of some parts of the game but thats all i can think of...
so what was the point? (btw i'm not saying this game is bad, apart from that one thing so don't take it like i dont like the whole game because i really do)

You get to do whatever the hell you want with no real consequences.
Plus you enslave people.

Because I can be.

I love being a jerk in single player games.
Mostly because I'm a total wuz in real life.

You don't have to worry about doing good things all the time. Wondering if each little thing was going to bring my karma don got a bit tiresome after a while.

I'm usually a goody two-shoes on games, but there's nothing like having the option to kill everyone you see to relieve some stress.
And when I'm done with all that, I go and play as a bad guy on Fallout 3.

It gave me some sadistic amusement.
I remember cutting the head off the mayor of Megaton, picking it up, and showing it to his son.

Because it's the other side of the moral system. Some people like to play the 'bad guy' in these games. Or in the case at least, the evil jerkwad. If you were evil enough you got to hang out with the slavers in Paradise Falls, hire Jericho and Clover as companions. Some NPCs (like 3 Dog) treat you differently if you are a plague upon the wasteland. You can take what you like and kill who you want (unless their kids. Shut UP Mayor MacReady!) And generally be the BAMF you want to be. Plus different endings. If any of those things are appealing, be bad.

And the Megaton Bomb scene is AWESOME.

That said, I nearly always take the 'good' path because I find it uncomfortable to act like that, even in a game. I'm just a naturally kind and helpful person.

there really isnt a reason to be good or bad because the karma system is flawed. i think that there wasnt really a point to being bad there were just more fun things to do. if you want to be a cannibal thats fine but you miss out on having fawkes as a companion.

My main problem with being bad in games is that normally it means rejecting quests.

Also, being mean makes my insides feel funny.

I found that being a noble paladin of the wastes landed me just as many prizes as being the world's greatest raider, so in-game profit probably doesn't factor in much. I did find, however, that going batshit with an auto-axe (the pitt DLC) was much more enjoyable than the love and affection of the miserable, incompetant NPC's whose fault most of my problems seem to be. The end result for helping the slaves is more or less the same as if they'd just let you kill all the fucking raiders and been done with it.

It's a bit like morality in Infamous, being nice is fine, but killing everyone means no J Jonah Jameson wannabes ("voice of survival." Asshole.) calling you a terrorist for helping people, not that old Three-dog does that.

You can level faster as evil with the right perks. I'm serious! Not to mention all the caps you can make by stealing and just murdering people.

The Regulators are a bunch of pussies compared to Talon company for one.

Also you can be bad and still have Charon and Dogmeat in your party, what with Dogmeat being such a lovable cutie and Charon being a total bad ass especially in the prototype power armour with the Terrible Shotgun he's nigh on unstoppable.

I recommend you give Charon the T51-b power armour and Lincolns hat to make him look like a Robot Zombie Lincoln! RAHH!!!

As for actual consequences to being bad other than having Regulators on your ass, well you Father really disapprove's, he's really disappointed.

Yeah the Legion definitely got shafted in New Vegas.

Still, as long as you're disguised, or are stealthy about killing NCR, you won't get any bad rep. At least I think so.

Um.... fun? Nothing is more amusing then hearing about how much of a devilish asshole you are on the radio, or going for the bad don't fck with me karma, while still doing good then listening to 3dog call you a heartless piece of shit your intro, then say how you just rescued kids from slavers, and a town from super mutants. And there's a lot of crap talk in fallout, some ppl need their heads powerfist off to teach'em to watch their mouth in a lawless city. Besides who needs Fawkes and Star pld when you get Charon and his heavenly shotgun!

That is why.

To be honest, I rarely play as the bad guy. When I did decide to play the bad guy for one stupid quest, I ended up making an entire area hostile and losing a bunch of quests. I play nice so I can get more quests.

I think a huge issue of fallout is giving you an incentive to be evil. Doing good is always more difficult than evil, I think the game should step on you for trying to be good. I think the Karma system is a little outdated too, it should be more subtle than that. Simply put, there should be no karma meter, just different people should look upon different actions differently, and react differently.

Basically, I want some bloody moral ambiguity in games, to make decisions difficult, and not just a trivial choice of what playthrough you're going for.

People who like playing good in games have some more interesting decisions, and players playing evil bastards won't notice the difference anyway. ;)

I saved that boy from fire ants, dressed up as the antagonizer and went and killed his aunt with a flamer right in front of him...

Aside from doing what you want there is no reason.
Its a bit better in the new game, as even if your evil factions will like you if you dont fuck them over, but piss of the ncr and you loose most quests, merchants and most locations will be hostile.
The legion has like 5 places... About that many quests too and 1 merchant iirc...
Legion gets shafted.
the problem with the new one is you can gain kama for killing someone (eg a fiend) then lose it again for taking the stuff in the box next to their corpse it's a bit flawed.
there is no real reason to be good or bad in that game
