What was your first impression of the Escapist as a poster?

This was my first forum experience and I have to say it's been a rather pleasant experience. I've seen the traffic sky rocket over the years (I lurked from around March 08) I like the meaningful discussions and the occasionally hysterical forum games. I spend more time reading comments from others than posting myself. As a result I feel as if I know some of you quite well although I may not have spoken to you directly, it's a shame some of those have either started posting less or have moved on or got themselves banned. I like to make good threads and take pride in them when they kick off. I feel the need to step in when I see someone being harrased for an opinion, or offer an alternative viewpoint to those who are narrow-minded.

I make the occasional comment here and there that the quality of the forums has declined. It's a noticebally different place than it was last year. People have loosened up a lot and are starting to have more fun again. Our most recent notable postors, not unlike your self Pimppeter, have been able to engage the communtiy and make it a fun place to be whether you are a well-known poster or a newbie to the forums. The more the merrier, really does seem to be the attitude around here now and for that I have no ill comment to make. Sure this place could stand to be a little more original at times but hey, what ya can ya do? Perhaps a new board for way-off-topic might bring some relief to those wanting a bit more freedom to have a good time or whatever.

As for how the communtiy has been affected by my presence? I don't know, you tell me. I'd like to think my attempts at wit and reasoning are welcomed here at least...

Me, maybe because he got banned before I got gonzo. But he did praise me (as far as his praise ever went) for my religious views. I felt good after that posts. I was a simple papaerboy at that time.
I got praised by him as well, for a user review. The grammar was terrible, but whatever. Pimppeter might have said something as well , but I forgot what.

I was suprised at how nice people were, and that constructive criticism existed on the internet.

Never a truer word spoken.

OT: I had bad grammar, bad spelling, and a bad attitude. I came from two forums (The WoW Off-Topic forums, and The Off-Topic(a forum website most probably don't know) and I came for ZP, and thats all I did for a month, then I watched other things, like De-Rez(RIP) and Unforgotten Realms, but then I decided to make an account and my life changed.

(Hooray for too many commas and me being to lazy to make the sentence correctly structured!)

Edit: I jsut realized, I've technically been here for a whole year. Anyone think I'm known enough to make a thread about it?

I remember thinking I would never get anything near 1,000 posts. If you told me a year ago that I would get 10,000+ I would have called you a crazy person.
I'm sure that's how every gonzo user feels when they first join. Heck when I joined, only about 4-5 regular users on this site (not counting staff/ contributors) had over 5000 posts, and only two of those users had the Real Ultimate Poster badge for getting that many posts without mod wrath, and I thought that I would never do that in my time here. Yet 10 months on and I'm 15 posts away from matching that challenge.

Just so people know where I'm coming from, I first heard of this site when a friend of mine introduced me to Zero Punctuation. I then signed up as a member when I heard of a certain event advertised in the videos (the name of this event I won't bother mentioning as it has been known to attract a lot of flames before over it).

As for my first impression of The Escapist as a poster, I think it would've probably been indifference. Before signing up here I hadn't visited a forum site for about a year and a half and I kind of treated it the same to the forum site I regularly posted on before (as in, I had no real care for the majority of the community). I also wasn't very regular at first on the forums (partly due to school, partly due to me recieving flames for my first few posts and threads/ opinions) and it was only after I stumbled upon Forum Games & RP that I decided to become a regular poster (after posting occasionally there for a little bit), when I had nothing else to do for the summer. There I noticed the potential for the community of this site and where I grew to like the forums/ the people who post there.

Up to that point I felt it was similar enough to the previous forum I was on for me to act similarly on (though more maturely) and give as little care about this site as I did to that one. I have changed my mind since then, though. I have also learned how to be a better poster in my time on this site, and am glad to still be here and glad to start taking my habit of putting effort into what I write onto other sites like Youtube as well.

Well, when I first joined there were much fewer Search Bar Nazis and Grammar Nazis around. I made a thread quite early on, that had actually been posted recently, about Oblivion, and nobody called me out on it. Also, my very first few posts were absolutely horrific in their quality and yet nobody started having a go at me for grammar. Overall though, I just thought it was a pretty decent place to be. Something which obviously hasn't changed much for me, as I'm still around today :)

I actually just decided to stop freeloading and decided to make an account here so I could join in with you guys.

But yeah, ZP brought me here, and I decided to explore the site, saw it was entertaining, and as of today decided to jump in.

I started out as annoyingly earnest (probably still am) and as the crazy youth rights guy (I joined because of a glut of youth-bashing threads). Shortly after joining I casually befriended a few users and took to Max and Sky as guiding figures for me. One of the users I casually befriended, NeutralDrow, ended up becoming by far my best friend here.

As for memories and incidents I remember, I became friends with a few people including Suiseisuki IRL thanks to an advertising thread that quickly got derailed (I'm all for derailing troll threads because of that time), largely because I shared a french fry recipe when the topic of a potluck came up. I also remember Evil Jak's (he's here, but his name's changed) memorable Escapist thread and how I got mentioned a couple of times for my avatar, not to mention a certain trolling incident in that thread.

Oh, and I think he might have been banned before I joined, but I pleasantly remember Eggo.

Came here for ZP, stayed for everything else.

I liked it for the 'mature' discussion, great grammar and punctuation and the fact that trolls were quickly banned.

I don't think I ever did..maybe luck?

OT: I just remember feeling weird about going into IRC so I just read the convos that were going on. Still do in fact, but sometimes I actually speak.

At first, I had a very nonchalant attitude towards this site. I'd spend about thirty minutes on here before leaving.
And then Daye.04 got me into the Forum Games section. You could say he got me really hooked on the site.
Christ I remember those days. Me and you would go head to head on Forums games. You sir, are what kept me from killing myself during my spares in high school

What brought me to the Escapist? Well after a friend [Sporky111] showed me Zero Punctuation on youtube, I became intruige and went to Yahtzee's website, which had a link here. After a few days of lurking I found a thread I wished to make a comment on. Little did I know I was up against Alex_P. I lost my small debate, and since then, though mostly staying in Religion& Politics, and Forum Games, I strive to make well thought out posts and contribute to a conversation.

Sweet! I'm putting that on my virtual resume!
*writes that bit of detail in*
Would you say that was out of interest or me keeping you up way too damn late and you lacking the energy needed to off yourself?
:p
I stayed up way too late far too often back then on this site...

I was drawn here by ZP, and finally noticed far too many threads that looked worth posting in to ignore.

My opinion has only grown since then.
