The ESRB didn't exist back when I first started gaming. However, some of the first games I played were Mortal Kombat and Doom, whose content jumpstarted the ESRB and received M ratings post-release. The first title I bought that had an M rating was Starcraft, although that was later changed to a T rating.

Mine was Wolfenstein 3D when I was 6 I believe, it was extremely fun for it's time.
Mine was Doom, and I was 10. If you want to get technical, the ESRB wasn't around to rate Doom and Wolf 3d at the time. Still, your point is that the games were still meant for 17 or older.
Oh yeah I completely forgot the ESRB wasn't around then, it came out when Mortal Kombat was made.

I would say Halo 2 when the Xbox first generation was still big. Not the first M game I played, mind you, but the first one I owned.

Unless it was retroactively rated by the ESRB and you played it a few years after its release, Wolfenstein 3D wouldn't have been M because it existed two years prior to game content ratings.

Anyway, perhaps the first 'M' game I played extensively that wasn't rated retroactively was Turok: Dinosaur Hunter, as I skipped from playing games made pre-1994 on the PC and NES to owning an N64. The first retroactively rated one would've been - I don't know - DOOM, I guess.

I believe GTA:SA, or it was the first one I conned my grandmother into buying me behind my parent's backs because she didn't know what the ratings were for...

I don't remember exactly but the first that I can think of is Drakenguard aka bloody gorefest where a papercut fills the screen with more blood in the human body!(With dragons!) or Bleach (on the blood part) It was a fun game but the stupid you have to fight your own dragon boss was way too hard for me so I just gave up (This was before I used gamefaqs for anything).
