A mud cube precariously constructed on the top of a huge cliff face. When I knocked the front out to check if it was morning I caught the attention of three creepers who then proceeded to blow said mud cube and part of the cliff into the sea. I died.

Ramshackle sprawling mine with a bolt holes to hide from nasties in a pinch, often spontaniously generating bolt holes while crapping my pants.

i built a hole in the ground on the beach because i saw creepers and sealed with wood. from a tree.
my first real home was a few feet from that on a hill i built it above ground with wooden blocks first a built a sky platform then expanded one i figured out how to make pick axe and turn wooden blocks into wood. What got me though was when i built it above the ground with no connection to the ground and went to bed, skeletons spawned in my sleep in my bed. That is just stupid

I spotted a mountain with a large cavity dug through the center, so I made the trek there and started building within and around that mountain. There are three rooms: the main shelter, the bedroom and the throne room, in ascending order. The majority of the house hangs out in the air around the mountain. I didn't want to ruin it.

I also ran a pretty expansive mine through the bottom on the mountain.

I built a modestly sized castle, only about 30x30 blocks or so. I took a while to figure out two way switches for doors, but I got there in the end.
2 floors at 3 rooms per floor, an obsidian bedroom, a basement, a roof, a glass wing, and am currently digging out one side into a mob proof cliff, by making the the ground a dozen blocks below the floor of my base.

Also, a pain in the arse, the underwater base- took me a couple hours to drain one small room of water.

Like many others it was just a hole in a giant mountain. I ended up bulldozing the whole mountain eventually, so the house was all that was left.

I had heard a little bit of how to start your game from a friend of mine.

I cut down a few trees, ran to the nearest 'mountain' and found a little cave in the side of it. I walked in, and luckily found A LOT of coal, boarded up the open areas with stone and dirt, and lit a few torches.

Then the zombies, creepers, and skeletons came and I cried a little.

A hole inside a natural "cave" which I later surrounded with walls and later I dug tunnels to different outposts that I had all over the place. (so that I wouldn't have to move around on the surface during the night)

My first house was about a 3x3x3 room surrounded by stone. Just enough space for a crafting table, stove, and chest. I eventually built a tower above it with spiraling stairs, but it didn't amount to much.

Great question, though. Funny thinking back on the days when I didn't understand that you have to dig DOWN to find materials...

Edit: and by down I of course don't mean straight down. That would be suicide.

A convoluted house. It had the main building, which had a hollow that ran up into a room with two floors. There was a gravel "Staircase" into a crude mine, and then a tunnel leading into a kind of dome that was the opening outside. IT was made of dirt and badly lit, and was quickly destroyed and flooded by a creeper.

I hollowed out part of a mountain to make my first home, it was quite cosy. After I expanded a little, and added a few extra rooms it turned into quite a nice little dwelling I had.

I had a nice beachfront view, and I even managed to build a lighthouse and some docks near the beach a few days before I moved to a new mountain a few miles away.
This is almost identical to my first home, I thought I was being original!

I now live in the loft of an item shop I built in the town me and my friends made, it even has a toilet with a flusher

My first actual home was a series of rooms cut into the rock of a mountain that was part of an awesomly beautiful structure of mountain, cliff and...whatever the word is for when there's sort of a bridge between two mountains that sort of looks like a gigantic O.

I made that little slice of heaven my own, building guard towers, farming, a labrinyth of caves and dug out rooms in the main mountain...I miss that place sometimes.

I made a ladder up into the top of a tree, flattened out the leaves and made dirt walls. I later replaced the dirt with tree-stumps and made a bridge to another tree. Much later on, I made a tree-top town made entirely of wood and dirt, even with farms on top of trees and channels of water flowing to them to fuel them.

A hole some way up a cliff face. I found coal, mined it, then shoved a door in the gap. Of course, I was safe from attack, because I was several hundred feet above the ground. I built a ladder to get me to and from safety...except for one awkward moment when I opened my door and sent a creeper soaring through the air, detonating far below.

Dug into the side of a mountain, And most of my starting homes/baces still do. Its just so easy and can often lead to maybe some coal or early iron.

My first home was an under-hanging apartment kind of thing at a cliff.

It eventually burnt down along with the whole world... an I really do mean the whole world! It spread EVERYWHERE!

First home? A hole in a wall.
First actual house? A giant floating stone octopus fortress. Too bad it got deleted.
