Bravely default is slowly growing on me too, might be about equal up.
What is Bravely Default like exactly? I need more 3DS games (I have one) and all I can think of getting is Fire Emblem Awakening which I hear is good.
It's pretty much like an old school Final Fantasy with a Dragon Quest style battle system. I did a small review of it in the JRPG fan club which I'll post here

So time for the verdict on Bravely Default.

It's essentially an old school overworld + airship style JRPG. The battle system is quite similar to Dragon Quest, but rather than building up tension to execute more powerful attacks, you instead default turns which allows you to pull off up to four consecutive attacks in one turn (called Brave). You can also attack four times at once without defaulting any turns, however this leaves you vulnerable and unable to move for the next three turns. It essentially becomes a risk-reward type scenario where you try to kill off the enemies with the most efficient use of Brave and Default. It really is quite fun.

It also incorporates a Job System (and Job systems are the best). It's got all your classic jobs, like White Mage, Black Mage, Knight, Monk etc. On each character you can have one main Job, plus a secondary job which allows you to use skills from both. And each job unlock support abilities as you level up that can be used in combination with any job, giving you a wide range of possibilities with character building.

The story is so far a simple affair. The world relies on crystals which have been taken by an evil power of some sort, causing global calamities, and thus you quest to fix them. It is however very well written, The English voice-over is poor though, I suggest changing the language to Japanese, if only because the emotion and tone carries the story much more effectively (like with most anime series).

The Skit system from the Tales of series also makes an appearance. Unfortunately they aren't voiced but they are still quite funny and provide some good character building. A lot of effort has been put into streamlining and eliminating some of the bullshit from JRPGs. The rate and difficulty of random encounters can be adjusted at will. And Battles can be sped up 4 times the usual. This makes any grinding a breeze.
I recommend playing it on Hard as it makes the boss battles quite intense and tactical affairs.

The soundtrack is excellent. Fully orchestrated and reminiscent of Final Fantasies of the PS1 and PS2 era. The artwork is also excellent, with towns and the landscape resembling a watercolour painting.
Overall a great classic styled JRPG. I highly recommend picking up a copy. 9/10

It takes classic Final Fantasy combat, some of the story from FF1 and improves upon it and adds class changing and some social features to the mix (though some of these can be a little op, i don't recommend using Abilink and summoning since it can break the game quite a bit)

It is the first game of it's style i liked in a long time. You can easily get 50-80 hours out of it if you do everything

What, you mean that game that has yet to even have a solid release date in the EU because Atlus are lazy cunts is really good? I'm more of a Persona 4 man myself but lucky you. I'm not bitter or anything.

[sub]What is this like the 10th time now?[/sub]
Haha I had to give in and import an American 3DS so I could play it.....And it was damn worth it.

It's either Bioshock: Infinite or Battlefield 4. I hesitate on saying Bioshock: Infinite because of its shitty ending and that I haven't played Burial at Sea yet. I hesitate to say Battlefield 4 because despite it being a really good game, so much funner than Battlefield 3, its release has been notorious for being buggy and unfinished, and the so-called netcode problems are without a doubt the worst I've ever experienced. Delaying the DLC release (and thus delaying my precious M60E4 from the Second Assault DLC) made them lose the tiniest amount of good point, but at least they're delaying it on account of fixing the game.
.
Gotta agree on Battlefield 4. There is a good game there somewhere buried among the mountain of bugs and glitches. And how can the net-code be this bad after however many Battlefield games they've released. Only explanation would be that DICE are not being given enough time to finish the game.
It's been accepted (though I don't think anyone in DICE or EA will ever confirm it) that the game was rushed out in its buggy state to beat CoD Ghosts on release date.

Some bugs and problems I don't mind being shipped out, because they're bugs that would require thousands of people playing the game constantly to find out. Remote-controlled equipment can cap flags? Sure, I can accept that. Denied revives count as teamkills? Annoying, but it's acceptable. One gun with right combinations of attachments can vastly outplay most other guns in its class? (nottalkingabouttheace23nopethereisnowayiamtalkingabouttheace23) That's something they can give a logical nerf or buff to.

Then there's bugs that are pretty inexcusable. How about the M320 Flashbang and M320 LVG crashing every time you fire it off? The only reason that made it into the game was that nobody ever fired those weapons or nobody cared you could carry game crashing weapons. How about my T-UGS that explode for no reason? Or those annoying texture bugs and unimpressive draw distance? Or all those times you're running or jumping over something and you just... fall over and die?

And the beta was off to a really good start too! Most of the bugs in the beta were texture bugs, optimization problems for the PC, or the occasional problem like when vehicles would endlessly spawn fifty feet up and explode (which was hilarious, especially when you found an attack boat in the middle of the street wrecking tanks). The beta felt like it was about balance, like the Mobile AA being too powerful against armor or the illogical action of RPGs being able to lock on, and then the full release came out and DICE can take two weeks at a time to roll out an update that makes it so the game doesn't crash every ten minutes. (And then the fix ends up breaking five more things in the game.)
Yep. The level of bugs here is pretty much inexcusable. It's clear that they didn't even bother to test the game (or didn't have time, probably the latter). And it always impresses me how much DICE manage to fuck up the game with each update, it's one step forward and two steps back.

The worst part is the constant crashes though. I can't play more than two consecutive games without at least one crash to desktop.

My Game of the year could be MH3U, even if I exclusively played it on the 3DS. So many hours in it, and it was all fun.

But I think I liked Fire emblem: awakening more. While I did get through it once on normal and hard, at one point I gotten more focused on the relationship thing, just to have more convos. They were all great to read. As for the gameplay, might have to focus on doing a run without using the grind dungeons.

Honorable mentions:

Soul hacker, pokemon with a more serious story, even if it feels like a saturday morning cartoon type plot. I just can't get enough of fusing demons to see which new ones I'm getting. As well as going to muramasa to cook up some more swords for me.

Pokemon X, though I haven't played it after I have beaten the elite four for the first time. Feels a bit more anemic when compared to BW2. Guess I had more goals set out in that version though.

Etrian Odyssey IV. Atlus made me their fanboy, and I'm not regretting it. Great music, good enough story to drive the plot forwards and the challenge are all done very well.

Come to think of it, this might just be my top 5. There are other games I have played that do deserve mention, but I'd be going on and on at that point.

I got the most mileage out of Ninja Gaiden 2 + on my Vita. The framerate issue is completely blown out of proportion by reviews. Guacamelee was great too. Of the big PS3 releases I guess I only played infinite and while the art design and the story were tops, the gameplay was really meh I thought. I do enjoy but havent finished Ni no Kuni and DD:Dark Arisen.

My first thought was AssCreed 4: Black Flag.

I had more fun with the ship action and pirate stuff than I have with any video game in years.

However, then i remembered that I simply stopped playing the game as soon as my ship was done being upgraded as there was now zero reason to ever board or even sink another ship.

Its bloody excellent. An incredibly good game.
Runner up is The Stanley Parable. I never played a game like that before, had a lot of fun :) .
So I'm agreeing with this fellow.

I adore Metro 2033 with all my heart and Last Light was a surprisingly good sequel. The story got a tad bullshit and a bit Disney if you take the shit ending, but overall it was a fantastic experience. Creeping through the night time swamp on Ranger Hardcore ranks in my top 5 gaming moments ever. The environments were gorgeous, the combat was well done if a bit easy and the whole thing overflowed with delicious atmosphere.

Also The Stanley Parable because... The Stanley Parable.

I don't think I've played any 2013 game other than Saints Row 4. So that wins by default.
However, if I had played other games, it's highly likely that SR4 still would have been my GOTY, because I just love me some freakin' Saints Row.

Probably because I'm a new dad and played it right before my daughter was born. When Anna loses her fingertip was one of the worst experience I've had. Reminded me of the incident from Spec Ops The Line. I will always recommend games like this as it shows what they can be.

I'm gonna go with Persona 4 Arena (Pretty sure it got an EU release in 2013), the gameplay is på pretty damn solid and i love the presentation. Aside from that i haven't really played anythg worth noting, it's been a crappy year for gaming imo. I am a bit excited by The guided fate complex (?) and a couple of 3DS and WiiU titles that i haven't played yet, but yeah, there's not a lot of promising releases.

Same here. That ship combat and boarding was the greatest thing ever while it lasted though. Every battle was epic.

This is why it's a good thing they made those upgrades so fucking expessive. As long as you have something to pine for, you'll keep wanting to ransack other ships.

Hitting dudes right in the face with the swivel cannon was pure slapstick gold.

For a competitive feel. Battlefield 4 despite the bugs, although granted I've had a good run performance and stability wise. The single player campaign didn't make me want to pull my eyes out, so a massive improvement there. DON'T BUY THIS FOR SINGLE PLAYER!

For a deeper single player experience. Civ V: Brave New World is a life destroying monster that really solidifies Civ V as a great Civ game. Just. One. More. Turn.

For shits and giggles...and science. Kerbal Space Program isn't even released yet but made it to Steam this year in all it's rocket sciencery glory. Failure is always an option.

I also really liked Grid 2 and Call of Juarez: Gunslinger

CIV Brave New world/XCOM Enemy Within probably took most of my time.

I only got it recently for PS4 but i'm also thoroughly enjoying the new Assassin's creed.

Either Ni No Kuni, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite or Shadow Warrior.

I loved Civ 5 Brave New World, but I'm not counting it.

Bioshock Infinite.
I had an absolute riot with this game. I conceder myself incredibly lucky that for whatever reason I had absolutely no problems at all with the gameplay. I see every one moan about how bad it was and thank my lucky stars that I have no idea what they are talking about, and I don?t want to either.
I loved every part of that game.

The visuals were just amazing, the colors and environment had me feeling as if I was roaming around in a surrealist painting. I love Rapture, but for me Columbia blew it out of the Water ;-) (yes I realize I deserve several slaps for that horrible pun)

I adore Elizabeth both as a character and just how she worked within in the game. Unlike Resident Evil where Sheva was a constant annoyance and burden that I simply saw as a simple AI whereas with Elizabeth felt like an actual, heh this is going to sound quite naive and idiotic, but she felt like an actual living companion. Yes they fooled me, Ken and the boys/girls found a way to make the shark look real to me.

If there is anything I love even more than the world and Lizzy it?s how many times this game just had me going ?what?s happening??!!! O.O? especially once you get inside Comstock?s house and that ending, talk about a closer.
As you can see I allowed myself to be completely enveloped by this game and I have absolutely no regrets. Call me easy to please but I love this game.

Runner up (more like on the same block fighting for the gold cup)
Blood Dragon.

The Last of Us.
I do understand many criticisms that game gets, especially when people say that there's nothing innovative in a game, but I just don't care. Sure, in all honesty, there's nothing new that TLOU brings to the table, but so fucking what?! It is an amazing game and every single trope it uses, it uses perfectly! Yeah, it's zombie apocalypse, but they do know how to use setting for their advantage with nature that overtook the civilization. Yeah, it's another story where grizzled old man have to escort young and naive female. But that grizzled old man is the most morally ambiguous character I've ever seen, and that young and naive female is capable, funny and incredibly endearing. And their relationship is just freaking amazing! Not even Persona 3 and 4 managed to pull of the relationship between two characters so smoothly! Yeah, gameplay is kinda generic with some stealth and survival elements. But this is the first game that actually made me feel like a survivor! It made me feel scared for my life, it made me conserve my resources, use every trick up my sleeve and avoid confrontation whenever possible because risk is simply not worth it!
This one game immediately justified my purchase of PS3 and that's all I have to say.
Summed up perfectly.

It may not have originality on it's side, but what it did, it did fantastically. It is one of my favourite games of all time.

My own honourable mentions:

Bioshock Infinite - I mentioned in Jim Sterling's award video that I didn't think the combat was all that great, but it is the only downside to an otherwise superb game. I love the story, the characters and the setting. The style was great, so were all of the little touches.

Fire Emblem: Awakening - Another game with a great story and cast. The game-play was also brilliant, although the difficulty was a little skewed, with enemies simply targeting the most easily killed troops, as opposed to the most threatening. I was also disappointed that they introduced a relationship system (romantic and platonic) but didn't allow s/s options. I wanted to pair up my character with Say-Ri, but no...

I haven't played any games from this year that i have thought were good enough to get a special mention...it's been a poor year for difficult games...
