Your quote from Team America gives your statement absolutely no weight and makes you look even sillier than you can possibly imagine.

For all those saying 'DRM' I'd seriously doubt that they could integrate it much more into consoles short of Ubisoft being allowed to introduce their 'always-on' DRM to consoles. If the rumoured defence against preowned games does come to the next Xbox then it will likely be in the form of DRM, but let's hope these rumours stay exactly what they are.

I got a crazy heretical one for you. The consoles will be conventional, but the streaming guys like OnLive are coming into the living room. Not that they couldn't be there already with an HTPC or microconsole but it'll be significantly less niche to have such a thing, also TVs are already headed for having "apps" and what not anyway. Half the coverage I read about CES this year was about Apple's vaporous iTV product. No one really expects it to be a console, so Sony and Microsoft have a permanent advantage in being able to play high end games plus all the multimedia stuff they love so much. What if they make an iTunes Streaming Games service? Yeah.

Of course, the quality of service will be wildly unpredictable since it all depends on the customer's network connections. So they may not build it themselves and let the OnLives of the world take the heat from the people for whom it doesn't work well. One way or another, I think you'll see some adoption of that model.

Graphics that look like pre-rendered cut-scenes hopefully the next Halo game looks like this:

And before you say it, I think Halo 4 will be coming to the Xbox720, why? Because if the 360 truly is lurching towards the end of its great cycle, then it would make sense to have it as a launch title.

I'm really worried that the next generation WILL spell the end for either Sony or Microsoft's console days... and my feelings are leaning towards Microsoft at the moment.

Hell, it could be both. Who knows...

I am wondering if there will be another entry into the console race in the foreseeable future.

Valve? Sega? EA? Nvidia? AMD? None seem likely, but stranger things have happened...
I would love to see Valve and AMD team up for a console. Preferably with more of a PC slant, Kinda like Alienware are doing with their mini-PCs, but better.

Seriously, AMD already does most of the hardware for quite a few different things (eg 3DS, iPhone), so they have the expertise. I think Valve would be the best to bring something new (and functional) to the table to back it up.

Have you even seen a WiiU?
It uses motion controls, except you're moving around the tablet instead of a remote now.
Godsdamn it, Nintendo....there is no facepalm big enough. WHY CAN I NOT SIT AND ENJOY MY GAMES?
But you get to flail about like an idiot! How is that not fun?! So ungrateful!

OT: So far the 8th generation seems to be shaping up to be a bit of a disappointment. It might actually be the generation where I finally bite the bullet and buy a gaming PC.

I can see Apple trying to get into the fray and blurring the line between PC and console. I've even thought of a name: iPlay.

(Actually, that name looks stupid. But not as stupid as Wii...)

I don't believe that much will change in the form of innovation or improvement. I really hope that the next gen consoles don't focus too much on 3D capabilities/dependencies because a.) it's not great, b.) it's annoying, and c.) we will be in the same situation that the 3DS is in right now: releasing titles that utilize the 3D feature as a selling point rather than an additional feature. This is why Pokemon Black & White was not released simultaneously with the 3DS (and they were release 3 weeks apart from each other), why the initials for the 3DS lacked charm and interest, and why some great/desirable titles had been held back/have yet to be announced.

Give me hologram technology now!

And how do you improve from that? Touchable hologram interface!!

Aside from the obvious advancement in graphics, I think one of the mayor advancements, change or whatever you want to see it, is the predominance of digital distribution. There are already rumors of Microsoft trying to ditch out used games, but as long as they keep a reasonable price and make discounts to their games to rape my wallet every now and then, I really don't care, I'm used to it with Steam.

One thing that's a given will be support for 3D TVs. Now, since there's a standard for stereo 3D, that almost means that standard can be applied to VR headsets.

Unlike the failed Virtual Reality attempts of the 90s, now the headsets can be smaller and lighter, with better screens and better graphics with a higher frame rate.

Combine that with using the inevitable motion control systems to facilitate head tracking for one wearing a VR headset. Ooooh, the possibilities!

Not much I'd guess - the cost of high quality graphics are going to become a limiting factor moreso than hardware (possibly) so going much further than they currently do is unlikely - unlike previous generations which were limited by hardware. Obviously a few of the newer DX enhancements will make it in but they don't make a massive difference in my view.

I think you've got your list wrong in some sense though, each generation raised the ceiling that the code was limited by, whereas in the days of my youth games were limited by the machines they ran on only a few games now (the most expensive to make) can poke the sky, further lifting of that limit in generations to come will mean fewer games having a problem with it - without massive development budgets to waste time on making their graphics that much more photo-realistic when really it doesn't matter, I mean, really, if it were, how did gaming ever take off in the first place?

One thing I would like to see is the move away from discs as physical media - nand flash is so cheap and capacious that we could see a return to cartridge style game forms, plus that way no one would have to pony up royalty to Sony every time a machine is sold or a disc burnt.

I mean I walk around with a 16GB micro-sd card in my phone and another in a USB adaptor which is little bigger than a USB port (literally only half of it hangs out the socket) - games wouldn't need to be that small so could utilise larger, cheaper chips found in USB Pen drives and still benefit from improved load times over spinning media.

Ok here we go ...
First off, not much difference in graphics, just more memory so less blurring.
I'm gonna guess that renting games for a set time while paying to renew your "subscription" for them.
No disks.
A lot more security to keep people from hacking it.
Higher prices with a lot of remakes.
Having to register into a program before playing anything ...
More focus on 3d. Maybe alittle more attention to the 6th axis thing.
More power to the controllers for faster wireless reaction time.
Ping grouping.
A FREAKING MIC BUILT INTO THE CONTROLLER.
More gimmicks.
Shorter games in general to promote faster "done with this one time to buy a new one" scenario.
System tracking, if you cheat/hack/displease the owner (not you) they can remotely shut off your console.

Welcome to the future.
