...I'm really glad I just started to poke my head into these gaming forums again today, because if I had to see that much hype outside of my general group of TES loving irl friends, I'd probably have gone insane.
And not pre-bought Skyrim.
But from my own perspective? I love TES (for better or for worse--and yes, this includes all of the infamous flaws the series is known for), as well as the open world gameplay and the sheer amount of things to do that it gives you. In Oblivion, I sunk way too many hours into that thing, and I spent more time exploring dungeons, gathering treasures, beating up demons, stealing food, picking flowers, and playing interior decorator to my amazing array of (stolen) houses that I didn't care one bit about the main quest. Well, okay, I did spend time closing Oblivion gates and doing Guild quests, but after I dropped the mcguffin character on the mountaintop shrine, I didn't give the main story a second glance, and just had fun running around in a huge sandbox fantasy world.
Skyrim seems to be an improvement of Oblivion (though still not matching Morrowind, probably, but what can really?) with a bigger sprawly world and dragons to beat up or something. I'm actually less enthused about the dragons and more interested in the wonderful dungeons (And yes, they did look samey after a while in Oblivion, but I also loved Diablo 1 and could play it again and again, so there we go) and towns I can explore. If you're the sort of person who likes to spend a lot of time exploring the wilderness, and doesn't mind a few issues with the uncanny valley, then Skyrim might be your game.
But if you are more of an instant gratification sort of person, then run away as fast as you can. TES games are formulaic when you have to get them going (and I always hate it when I start the main quest, because I could usually care less about the plot), and generally slow to start. Once you HAVE them started, though, it's buckets of fun if you like taking your time, exploring, and don't mind a few issues.
Unfortunately, it seems that all good experiences have to be marred by a bunch of raving fanboys at one time or another...
