On a single item, its definitely my Tuba which cost me £3,200. If we go with a more general thing, my DVD collection would probably cost me well over £20,000 if I had to rebuild it from scratch and is one of the reasons (OCD is the other) I have them all cataloged.
Not counting things I was able to get thanks to gift cards/gift cash, a pair of sneakers from Sketchers. They were $50-ish bucks.
I really needed new sneakers since the last time I had gotten a pair was while I was still in high school. Seeing as the new pair is the same type as the previous pair, they don't have holes, or are falling apart, I'm happy with them.
I can understand why rent/mortgage wouldn't be counted because you need some place to live, but why is a car considered "necessary"? I know plenty of adults who don't drive and get along just fine
Someone else already answered on page 1 (my how this thread popped while I was gone ) but I'll answer it too:
For many people, a car is a necessary purchase (at least for most of us here in 'Merica). If you bought a custom hot-rod that you're building yourself for fun, I would count that as your purchase. Basically, I just wanted to eliminate what is seen in many places as "necessary" since for the most part, that would be everyone's answer if they weren't eliminated. If you bought a car but you don't actually need one, people can feel free to count it. I will edit the OP to make that a bit clearer.

Everything you described is more or less the main reason why I chose Frolf (Frisbee/Disc Golf) over actual golf..
My buddy freaking LOVES disc golf (he's ranked even! ) and he's probably spent about as much as I have in disc golf. Now granted, he has hundreds of discs compared to my one set of clubs but still...
I just edited that into the OP as well. For the purpose of the thread, I would count it if it was all in one shot since it's all done to create one item (a computer in your case or a full set of clubs for me).
Right this second, I can just broadly say "shit that makes my car work" like tires and, liquids and, plugs and, rod-ends...Ask me again on Thursday though because I'm likely about to either drop nearly a thousand dollars on surgery with a bill or three that will ask me for a couple thousand more. Granted, that may not qualify since I'm considering bankruptcy or, suicide as a way to get out of paying for that...
As a single one-time purchase, my car: ~$13,000 CAN.
If you include the maintenance and fuel costs I've spent on said car, then that number increases a fair bit.
(That seems like a fairly common response from a fair amount of other users.)
EDIT: This does fall into the category as unnecessary purchases, as I already had a decently functioning beater that cost a grand total of 500$. This car on the other hand was bought for pleasure. It is my baby.
Does a wife count? I mean, I didn't buy her directly, but nothing in my life has cost me nearly as much money over the years.
No kids though, so that is savings in a way.
But yeah, I saved half of the money I made from age 13 to 29, got married at 29 and blew through all of my savings in 3 years after that, 12 years later and we have as much debt now as I had savings when we met.
I spent about that much on my computer. Also, that's not all that cheap for golf clubs. It's low on the spectrum, but you could have gotten that much gear for less than $800, probably less than %600 if I was really trying.
Hmmm, I guess my first smartphone counts, yeah? Although I really needed a new phone, I could've bought a much cheaper one. It cost roughly 3500 SEK, which is what? £310 or $520? Ish. This was 3 years ago and I bought it with the money left to me by my grandmother when she died, otherwise I never could have afforded it.
I recently bought a "new" phone - got it used - for a third of that price and this month has not been a happy one, money-wise.
Another thing I've bought that was even more unnecessary was Skyrim's Collector's Edition. That month was also very miserable for me financially, but I got a dragon statue from it, so yay?
I started golfing two years ago. I have greatly enjoyed it but the clubs I'm using are older than I am (they were hand-me-downs that were already hand-me-downs), slightly too short for me (1/2 inch or so), and technology has greatly changed since then. They served their purpose and tippy2k2 decided that he needed his own clubs to call his own.
My wallet hates me now
I spent $1013 on Friday buying two drivers, an iron set, two wedges, a bag, and golf shoes. I am well aware that this is CHEAP in the golf world but I did what I could.
-Driver; Taylormade Rocket
-4W; Taylormade Rocket
-Iron Set (3 H & 4 H, 5-9 I; PW); Callaway RAZR X NG Irons
-Gap Wedge; TopFlight 50*
-Sand Wedge; Topflight 56*
-Maxfli Golf Bag
-Golf Shoes; Footjoy
I then realized...outside of necessary things (like a car and rent), this is the most I have ever spent in one shot on something that I don't need. I suppose I've spent this much on gaming over time but never in one shot.
So Escapist people! To make my wallet feel better about what just happened to it, what is the most you've ever spent on something (again, not a necessary item though since most would say "Car" or house" if that's the case)? What did you buy? Are you happy with your purchase or do/did you have buyers remorse?
Feel free to just say what you got if you don't want to give dollar amounts but I promise, we won't judge you
EDIT: To make it a bit clearer, do not count items necessary for you to live and work. For example, here in 'Merica, a car is a necessary purchase unless you live in NYC or a similar place. In other places, a car may not be necessary but you bought one because you like to drive it around and therefore it could count as your most expensive purchase.
EDIT 2: Multiple components for one big item DO count if they were purchased together. Like a PC in all it's parts or (in my case) a set of golf clubs since I "technically" purchased 14 or so individual components that morph into a super machine.
Well, to be honest after my now-dead car (it died and I've been forced into "retirement" with crappy social security) which you say didn't count, I'd probably say my computers. I've had several computers over the decades and typically when I bought a new system I didn't hold back because I could afford it (unlike now, where I have doubts about being able to get one again). $2000-$3000 on a gaming rig probably fits your definition, and I did it more than once. If you got into the cumulative amount I've spent on things like PnP RPG books when I used to be into that more than I am now... that might be higher. Of course I've lost or occasionally given away a lot of that stuff. I had a reasonably good job for quite a while.
I have spent a fortune on cameras, but those are a business expense. That said I just spent over $2500 on Fuji X series cameras and lenses that I don't need, that is duplicated by my existing Nikon gear, but that I really wanted. I'll find a job I can use it on soon enough and then it will be justified, but until then...
Yo dawg, I'm gonna do what the OP wants, but first I gotta say that I spent 3 grand on my car, in clear defiance/ignorance of that first post. Also in clear defiance of the first post, given that it wasn't in one shot, a few years ago I bought enough anime from Best Buy to qualify for a Silver Membership.
As to an answer that isn't facetious and actually answers the question asked, I bought 4 Space Ork battle forces a couple years ago because the price was about to jump. I definitely regret it. Games Workshop is a horrible company, and it's quite obvious they have no interest in creating a balanced game. It wouldn't be so bad, but everything is "some assembly required". I wouldn't be so salty about having a 0% chance of beating my Imperial Guard playing friend if it didn't take me dozens of hours assembling the pieces necessary to play the pointless game. And I still have to paint the damn things! And later this year I'll have to shell out another $50+tax to get the new faction specific rulebook, and hope I won't need any of the inevitable $50 supplements to make them playable again.
Other than that, I've been Kickstarting some board games at ~$200 a pop. I SHOULD have Kaosball in my possession by the time the semester ends. It almost makes me forget that Games Workshop stopped supporting Blood Bowl. (and Gorka Morka, and Dreadfleet, and...)
