I found the actual tabletop game boring, but I do like lore/books of the 40k universe.

There is a lot to like about Warhammer. There are people who just do the modelling and artistry and never play. There are people who only play and buy fully painted armies. I like the lore and the books. You should buy a copy of the Warhammer 40K Codex: Orkz or it's Warhammer fantasy equivalent if you like their lore because you can see the true depths of the ork joke.

On a side note the Eldar are my race of choice and be warned Mon-Keigh Eldrad has seen the stars stained red with humanities blood and it pleases him.

For the Emperor!!!

I'm a Catachan myself.

"We've run into scorpions the size of battle tanks. Three men died from Eyerot last week and I've sweated enough to fill a lake! Emperor help me. I love this place - it's just like home!"

Imagine a planet covered with venomous insects, gigantic overgrown man eating plants and enough foliage that you can't see 20 feet in front of you. Now imagine what kind of people live on this planet. I love the 40k game and lore. I like DoW2 the least but really enjoy DoW. The Warhammer game is alright but seriously, I would rather play WoW.

Chicago land area. Meet up at the Chicago bunker for a game? I only have 500 points right now but should be over 1000 by the end of summer!

OP, find to and go to a local Games-workshop, play a game or two with someone there using an army they have already built and see if you like it. It is an expensive hobby but you meet a lot of new people in the process and it can be a whole lot of fun!

The warhammer 40k universe is way cool. I wish there was more games set in that universe. There should be a 40k mmo coming out though, but not much info about it.
This is one I am looking forward to. Looks interesting.

Also there is a full CGI movie coming out about Space Marines if anyone is interested.

I am a big fan of the books and lore, but don't have a lot of cash to support my Blood Angel company (2 tactical squads, 1 terminator squad, 1 librarian, Brother-Captain Tycho, a bike and a Razorback).

The board game is fun but a little complex and expensive if you are looking for something quick. The RTS games would be cost effective and are still fun. The cheapest option would be to borrow the eisenhorn series and gaunts ghosts series from the local library and get into it that way.

I'm a die-hard Warhammer: Fantasy table-top gamer, and I very much enjoy Warhammer. 40,000. I do NOT enjoy the PC games, and I find myself annoyed at anyone that thinks its just a series of PC games and doesn't know about the table-top game =p. I do enjoy that the PC games recruit new table-top gamers tho, but the fact that 90% of them end up playing Space Marines pisses me the hell off, they are the lamest faction on Warhammer: 40,000 XD.

I myself own a store that specialize on Warhammer, the table-top games. I ADORE it, and I urge you to check it out at your local store, which I'm sure exist.
With all respect, 90% of everyone who starts playing 40k plays space marines, it's like a plague!

I'm not being arrogant, I play Eldar so I'm being in character you see.

If the OP is interested then he should just pop in to a Games Workshop or an indie shop (better option) and watch or play a game. It the best way to see it and at my locals we always love intelligent new players.
Started as Orkz, and always will play Orkz. I am getting rather sick or Space Marines, they are everywhere.

If you like MMO's, WH40k, and waiting, THQ and Relic are making a WH40K MMO. Release date is somewhere in the distant future, and you won't find a lot more information about it, than what you're getting from me, but it's coming. Maybe.

I don't play Warhammer but I do take issue with your assessment of board games. I mean, take a simple (by wargames standards) game like Axis & Allies or a huge advanced game like a GMT block game like Europe Engulfed either one is better than any WWII shooter on any console or the PC. In board games your desicions do matter, you can win or lose based on one seemingly insignicant choice.

Ok, I know it's your opinion but really try out a board game (other than stuff like Monopoly or Life) such as Dungeon Twister, Dominion, Arkham Horror, Twilight Struggle or Pandemic and see if you gain a new appreciation for them.

tl;dr I'm a board game geek lol

I started with Skaven for Fantasy and Chaos Space Marines for 40k. With the release of the newest edition of 40K I changed over to the Orks and haven't looked back since. Recently started playing Vampire Counts in Fantasy, although I'm thinking of stopping before I start to get serious with them and just go back to Wood Elves. Wardancers and Waywatchers are just too freaking awesome to leave behind.

Never understood the hate for the Ultramarines though. Sure, they're generic, but that's only because Games Workshop decided to push them as the generic army to rule all other generic armies. You see them being used by a lot of new players, but that's just a side effect of the starter sets pretty much always coming with a force of Space Marines and painting guides for the Ultramarines. Hell, Assault on Black Reach gives you a Dreadnought, 5 Terminators, a Tactical Squad and a Captain, plus a decent starting Ork force, all for less than the price of a single Battleforce, which comes with much less. It's simply a case of pricing really. New players getting into the games are looking for the cheapest army to put together. Space Marines is that army.

I have about 5000 of space marines under third ed and a small Eldar army I'm currently building slowly (student no likey pricing policy I'm afraid) it's a brilliant hobby but I physically can't afford more.

I love model making more, I'm building a walker from every army apparently! I've done a few so far and I converted them all except the Sentinel, which is just a stunning model.

Imagine my face when I took a look and realised that two armies don't have walkers after I started...
Games Workshop are pretty much evil personified with their pricing schemes and choice of models they actually make.

40+ points a model and/or incredibly good stats
"Well, we could make a kit up of this incredibly good unit, but we decided not to because we're fuckwits. Have fun converting up the unit that every player of this army takes".

Or if they do decide to make the unit up
"So we made up these new elite troops and decided that even though they're only a slight improvement in terms of detail / quality, we're going to charge you a premium for them because they cost a lot of points and we don't want our players to get exact same size plastic models carrying slightly better weapons for the same price. Enjoy paying $75 for 5 models you suckers".

So far as walkers go, convert up some of your own. I'm sure that they'll eventually get around to mounting a Necron in a walker. Tyranids though, I have no idea. Maybe a Genestealer cult or something like that?

FOR THE EMPEROR AND THE CHAPTER!

In the short time that I actually played tabletop I was a marine player, if only because I knew no better than. Unfortuantely financial constraints forced me off for a while, every now and then I think of getting back into it with a completely (well, almost completely) new army.

I want to start a pure Inquisition army, specifically the Ordo Malleus. The special rules against demonic entities make me all warm and tingly inside. Until then I guess I'll keep playing the DoW Inquistion mod.

The fantasy version is apparently a more indepth tactical game (haven't played fantasy for about one edition of the rules), but have Wood Elves and Dark Elves.

40K, on the other hand has tanks, so it wins. Started with Eldar, then picked up Space Wolves (because they are Vikings) and Orks when they were redone a couple of years ago.
I have a ridculous amount of 40K stuff, on my desk right now are 50 or so Wolves in various states of painted, with a couple of vindicators, another rhino, predator and Land Raider squadron needing to be finished. Plus there's the finished ones I actually use for gaming.

So yeah, warhammer is awesome, give it a try.

Okay, looks like there's enough folks here with a passion for the tabletop game. I'm looking to get in on Warhammer 40k. Going to have a lot of time on my hands pretty soon, and I'll be able to convince some other bored Marine to try it out too. So I got the time, and I got a partner. Now the question is what is the best way to start?

I've got a standing army of Tau. Mainly for painting - I'm not that much into the actual board game. But it's fantastic stuff; detailed, balanced and extremely addictive.

Warhammer is a collectable strategy game using small pewter of plastic figurines and a multitude of 6 sided dice.

Usually I shy away from any topic that starts with the words "My Chemical Romance" but it's a WH40k topic, so it's all good. Besides, the raw manliness of 40k may help to cure your taste in shitty emo bands.

I do so love the lore, stories, and video games of WH40k. I would love to play the actual tabletop game but two things hold me back:
1.) I live in the middle of nowhere
2.) I can't paint. I tried, lord knows I tried it once. That ended really badly though. An army of Orkz all spray painted with the same flat green colour probably wouldn't go over that well, cause any attempt at painting one up seriously would turn out looking very crappy. (My artistic skills with brush/pen/etc. are notoriously terrible).
