i think that the first name, last name, ip address/street address, and country of origin should be readily available to anyone in the world for anything posted on the internet, then maybe trolling will have dire consequences and will be discouraged at a level equal of you probably wouldn't do it to someones face and not get smacked for it.

The sad thing is that somewhere this opinion IS considered 'controversial' instead of 'common effing sense'.

I applaud you, but no post is complete without trolling, so:
It's 'they're country', fag.
Thanks, I was actually a little worried about this post. I know how tetchy people can get about Israel.

I think my opinion on the matter can be best summed up by the maxim "Two wrongs don't make a right"

Ooh I have a new one.

Assasination is a far more civilized way to solve problems than war. And governments should use it more often.
Agreed. I also get the feeling that the assassins of the latest generation would probably end up cobbling together hidden blades... and then never use it, because modern assassination comes down more to espionage, poisoning and faking accidents* and whatnot.

Edit:*miss typed.

Alright, here we go:

- Patriotism is a crock of shit. Yes, you can like where you live/where you were born but i think it's completely ridiculous to act as if it makes you an intrinsically better person, and to rabbit on and on about how fabulous your country is... It's just a land mass, it doesn't mean anything.

- Complete separation of church and state. Yes, you can have your religious beliefs, but if we are allowed freedom of religion, then you can't run a country in accordance to certain religious beliefs/practices but not others. That'd be unfair. So, just take religion out of the equation when it come to politics.

- Prostitution should be legalised. So should all drugs. People can do what they want with their goddamn bodies.

- I don't think that we should all automatically have to love/respect those that we are related to. If they're the sort of person you would actively avoid in every day life, why on earth should the fact that you share some genetic information mean that you can't tell them what you think of them, in the way you would with any other person?

- Oh yeah, and i want to be able to smoke in bars again. Yeah, health risks, blah blah blah. We're all going to die anyway.

Agree to a point. LGBT folk should be allowed to get 'married' - even if certain churches want no part of it, there shouldn't be a legal or linguistic difference between what straights do and what gays do.
And I think homosexuality should avoid being shoved down people's throats only as much as heterosexuality is. Sexuality in general is overused by lazy advertisers and it seems unfair that it's always straight.
The only real solution to all of this is to explicitly separate legal and religious "marriage" and use separate language for the two. Legal "marriage" then holds all legal rights associated with the institution and is not restricted by race (I always love to point out to the "marriage hasn't changed in hundreds of years" folks that it wasn't that long ago that interracial marriage was not legal in the US), sex, or orientation. Religious "marriage" is entirely up to the church performing the ceremony in question -- this ceremony confers no legal status of any kind and it is entirely up to that religious institution who they perform any ritual, ceremonial, or celebratory functions for. To mandate otherwise would be in violation of their first amendment rights.

I believe sex is a special, meaningful act that you should share only with the person you are married to. I get some really weird looks from people when they first ask if I'm a virgin and I say yes, then they ask why and I give them that answer.
The fact that I believe in God also seems to be rather controversial, at least on this site.
There are quite a few Christians, Muslims and other religions on here. It's just they don't mention it with every post they make, but when a topic like this comes up the athiests get unfortunately vicious.

OP: MY controversial opinion is that I'm Pro-life.

Not as controversial on this site but legalise prostitution, legalise all drugs, ban the teaching of intelligent design completely (I don't care what class it is).

Something a little more controversial, at least in the UK, is that I want to abolish the Monarchy.

I also wish the US would stop going around acting like its citizens lives are more valuable than someone from Iraq of Afghanistan.

I also believe that humans will never colonise another planet or reach another star ever.

If only. Unfortunately people will always consider it when voting, so it will always be part of the equation. Hell, JFK was controversial because he was the wrong "kind" of Christian (Catholic).

Yes, on the converse penalties for crimes committed while under the effects of intoxicants should have their penalties driven through the roof. At that point it's not what you are doing with your body, it's what you did to someone else after being stupid enough to do such things to your own goddamned body and then engage in risky behavior.

- Oh yeah, and i want to be able to smoke in bars again. Yeah, health risks, blah blah blah. We're all going to die anyway.
This one I'm less in agreement with. Your health risk to yourself is you own business. Your health risks to others aren't, and unfortunately smoking effects those nearby as well. There was an IHOP near where I live that had the right idea -- the smoking area was in an enclosed glass room was separate ventilation and a maintained negative pressure (so air would flow in but not out when the door was opened). This let the smokers smoke, while letting the nonsmokers not have to deal with it at all.

That a fetus is a child after 28 weeks after conception. (By then it's developed a nervous system, it can walk, feel pain, ect.) But if you want to abort it, I really don't give a shit, go a head and do it, I'm not going to make you feel bad for it.

Hmmmm. Good point. Anyone can get 'married' at the registry office but only parishioners of X church can be 'wed' there, pour example. Yeah I'm down with that.
Why can't escapist be in charge of politics, we do all right here.
Because alot of us aren't so progressive or tolerant. There are alot of people out there that think that the opinion they have is right. Opinions are opinions though.

Yes! See, if we had smoking areas and non-smoking areas, everyone would be happy.

They have to be smoking and nonsmoking areas that are separated in such a way that they have distinct airflow and persons in one are explicitly not breathing the same air as persons in the other, otherwise such a division is meaningless.

Hmm, I have a few...

1) I think that the USA is holding the world back from progressing and even forcing a regression to the middle ages. There is one major problem, everyones opinion is considered valid, no matter how stupid. This means that things like religion and the theory of creativity, which the educated world has disregarded as nonsense years ago, are still considered to be an ongoing debate.
The USA also allows smear campaigns, perpetuates reality tv and thinks that what fox news does is ok(ie, reporting one side of a story and arguing a point with interviewees).
I also think the US should be taken over by a country that knows what they are doing, like Germany or the UK. Then they could be brought in line with the Kyoto protocols, disband the needless army, educate their children, remove religious and corporate influence and stop using patriotism as a brainwashing tool.

2) Racism is not what it used to be. The only true minority is "White male", as they cant play the race/sex card. A white man is not allowed to use a word(******) which a black man is. This is the definition of racism.

3) "Feminism" is bad and is the opposite of "equality". I think its a way for jilted women to get "revenge" on men for some arbitrary thing that went wrong in their life. They use history to justify self promotion. In the past it was a positive movement, but I think it succeded and is now being held onto as a way to get "one up". If a man is paid more than a woman its sexist, if a woman is payed more than a man its empowerment. I have even heard people compare the salaries of two different jobs(one predominantly male, the other female, but nonetheless DIFFERENT jobs with DIFFERENT responsibilities) as evidence that sexism still exists.

4) I think there should be a single global official record keeping authority. Too many countries have their own version of history. I have met Americans who genuinely believe that they had a large role in WW2. If you learn about the war in Russia, the US were not involved to any large degree. From a German point of view the war was justified by the treaty of versailles unreasonable sanctions, from a brittish point of view the germans were crazy imperialists.
There is also the fact that the current economic climate is being called a "global" recession despite the huge economic growth in China, India and Australia. Then you have stupidly named awards like "Miss Universe" and "The World Series". One authority to stamp out truth embellishment and hyperbolic overstatement would solve so many arguments.

5) I think that anyone who believes in fortune telling/psychic readings/seances/etc, and anyone who chooses to appear in/produce/televise reality tv or daytime talk shows should be neutered.

But surely then we would lose everything that makes us human; our art, our language, our discoveries and inventions, our love, our dreams... strip us down to animals and that's what we'll be, just one of the many sentient but not sapient animals on this Earth. Sure, there wouldn't be any ideological conflict but there wouldn't be anyone to reflect on how that would be a good thing either.
That's exactly my point, we wouldn't KNOW about art, language and other things, so it wouldn't bother us that we don't know about it. Yes effectively for my theory to work we would have to sacrifice what "makes us human" but once it's done, we would have no recollection of the sacrifice, if you see what I mean.

Sorry, I know this is meant to be for controversial opinions but I'm just not seeing the benefits here. Losing our sapience wouldn't decrease suffering at-all, as we'd go back to the majority of people dying in early childhood of predation and disease, and the ideological conflict would be replaced by far more common low scale fights between tribes. I suppose we might not be aware of that suffering to the same extent, but then we'd also lose everything good about humanity.

1. As an American, I support the wars in the Middle East. Without some kind of intervention from somewhere, the whole area would eventually be 100% controlled by terrorist groups, criminals, etc. I do think we need to change our 'mission'. The Coalition, NATO, the UN, or even a single country should issue an ultimatum to the governments of the region saying "If you're not with us, you're against us." or at least "Help us, now, or we stop helping you." While the leadership isn't actively hiding our enemies in the Middle East, some of them aren't helping and yet we still spend millions and millions of dollars every year funding their militaries.

2. A unique religious view: God started it, but everything has pretty much been coasting since the big bang. The afterlife exists, and is unique to every individual. Christ existed, and was a great man/deity, but he's probably chilling with God ruling the afterlife right now. Prayer alone fixes nothing. Action solves problems.

3. I have absolutely zero sympathy for fat people who act like they're disabled and deserve special privileges. It's your own damn fault, get over it.

4. Humanity can and will, eventually, colonize space. Warp drives FTW. (The warp drive is theoretically possible. It annihilates matter in front and recreates it behind the ship. It cannot be made with current tech, but it could eventually.)

5. There is life elsewhere in the universe.

6. Humanity has destroyed natural selection and it's going to kick us in the ass someday. Everyone's opinion is valid, even the unbelievably stupid, and we coddle the students who are failing their classes. (We refuse to hold a student back except in the most extreme situations, even when they really should be). We try our hardest to save everyone, even people who, say, hurt themselves playing chicken with sports cars when they were drunk.

7. Violent content should be more restricted then sexual content. We're teaching kids (inadvertently) that sexual urges are evil, even though everyone will feel them, but violence is ok.

8. The American education system really, really, really sucks. This probably doesn't apply everywhere, but in my area it wasn't until 8th grade that students were explicitly told what a star was. At the same time, in 7th and 8th grade we were still 'learning' fundamental grammar that we had been taught since 2nd grade. And we were the 3rd or 4th best public school in the state!

9. American expectations about education should be higher. Currently, A=EPIC, B=VERY GOOD, C=OKAY, D=BAD. and F=VERY BAD. It should be A+=EPIC, A=VERY GOOD, B=REGULAR, C=BAD, D=VERY BAD, and F=ABSOLUTE SH*T. Honor roll should be changed to Straight As, not Straight Bs.

10. Athletes should have a few zeros knocked off their salaries.

11. The space program should receive a lot more funding.

Christ that was a lot of content. I should be President or something.
