Air, because I could fly, suffocate, and do other awesome things! probs also be able to use it in combination with fire to create lightning, to strike down the pesky trees and earth!
Now that you think about it, Fire isn't really an element is it? And if so, no more than lightning is. Explanation: They aren't constant. Unlike water and earth, they are only around until they run out of fuel (Fire needs air, and lightning needs friction(?) or pressure or something in the right amounts). While water and earth will remain.
Elements are considered the basis of everything, just like the basic colours. And when fire isn't always around, it can't exactly be an element (I think).
Can someone please prove me wrong, so I wont come off quite as douchy /ignorant / stupid?
By that thought process, yes your right. However just in general symbolism it seems that the consensus was the four: Air, Water, Earth, Fire.

Well according to my star sign my element is water. Which I'm happy with because water has always been my favourite. So I guess I'll go with water, the destructive force it has, is incredible.
Jar have you been gone or have I just not seen you?

I'd probably go earth cos its always around and can probably be the most useful... and (given the last airbender) it can be extended to metal so I can go all magneto! And in modern society there is so much metal that u'd always be able to bend something (if that doesn't work ill just go with metal)
Don't forget the mask, and the awesomeness. You need lots of the second one.

Ice would be a bit of an issue, but in my opinion, you can't defeat the sheer durability of earth and the ability to create stones and hurl them is perfect in a fight.
OT: This is a tough question, I think I would probably lean more towards water, based on the fact that if I'm powerful enough I can just control you.
Although to be honest most of my crazy daydreams( a lot of fire to stupid peoples face, creating a giant pillar to launch people etc etc.) in real life situations involve the other three, but practically speaking water would be best.
Wow, a lot of people seem to like water, which is a shame, because I like water too. I love the versatility you get with it. First, you can go from a liquid, using blunt force. Water gets a lot of force with high pressure, and can easily gain a lot of weight. After liquid, you go to a solid, ice. Ice has sharpness and temperature working for it. After those, you have the oft-overlooked steam. Steam is fucking deadly. Shoot it at somebody while it's under pressure and they are seriously fucked.
As for what element corresponds to me, I have absolutely no idea.
