Well I'd have to say Kashimashi and Gurren Lagann, both had great stories and drew me in to the point I never wanted them to end.

Fate Stay Night. Not so much because of the anime but rather the visual novel behind it. If you read the novel and then watch the anime, you can see everything fall into place, some parts are cut back and/or altered for the sake of cramming three stories into one, but otherwise is pulled off nicely.
Anyways, the fights are nice and the story is good although if it weren't for the visual novel backing it up I might have gone for a different anime.

personally? i know i'm going to get some dirty looks for saying this but: soul eater. yes, i know it has a LOT of flaws, but it's the only anime EVER where i have gone back for a rewatch immediately after i finish it and not stop until that first rewatch was complete. and for a 51 episode anime, that's saying a lot. and it's still really enjoyable now

Code Geass. I'm not really an anime kinda guy, but i did enjoy that one. Maybe you guys could recommend something similar? (I'm not thinking of the big robots smashing stuff. More story elements if you know what i mean :p)
Death Note springs to mind. All in all this type of anime is pretty rare. However, if you don't mind reading manga, Bloody Monday is kind of similar in the duel of geniuses department. Hope that helped.

OT: I've more than one favourite, as i can't honestly rank them in my list. I can, however, say that i really enjoyed Full Metal Alchemist:Brotherhood, Beck, Cowboy Bebop, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass and Death Note.

Clannad. The only tale that has ever made me shed a tear.

Edit: Incidentally, I hate reading these kinds of threads. So much anime, so little time.

Out of curiosity do I watch the 12 episode series or the OVA first? Can't find an answer anywhere.
In case noone has told you yet (I don't have time for reading the entire thread): It doesn't matter. The OVAs are very much separate from the tv-series. The OVAs are, juicier... though. You know, no tv-censorship there.

I, personally, watched the OVAs first, but watching the tv-series might be just as good.

One Piece and Trigun. One Piece for being funny and adventurous, Trigun for being badass and moving.

I used to love anime, but that interest has waned in the past 3 or 4 years. The only anime I still watch is "Death Note" and occasionally "Hellsing". Back in the day however, I used to watch "Astro boy" before I went to school.

That depends if you dont feel dirty about watching soft hentai...

Thats basically the ova and the manga.

The 12 episode serious tones it down, but its still pretty funny.
I have no qualms about hentai, I just want to know what comes first.

Also I can't believe I forgot to mention A Certain Magical Index and all its spinoffs. So much great story and a series for high minded people. I think of it as the Half-Life of anime.
If you want cheap laughs and no substance go with the ova

If you want good laughs with a pinch of substance go with the anime.

Thats all I got, doesnt matter where you start really.

Series: Azumanga Daioh - it is funny, I love all the characters because they all remind me of people I know...who are guys, and I'm a guy...it's still relatable shut up!
Film: Pom Poko - brilliant Japanese cast, good humour, drama and fantasy, great animation and a really fun soundtrack.

I also like Samurai Champloo a lot, and I'm also getting into One Piece, but it's a little frustrating that they don't end a story in one or two episodes, just because of how Cowboy Bebop flows, and Trigun and Samurai Champloo for the most part. The underlying story still goes on, but an episode is still stand alone if you want it to be.
