A hundred years ago the cameras in the photos were really distracting.

Honestly, it's just one of those things humans will invariably do. If you could go back in time and gave smart phones to people throughout history, teach them how to use them and share photos, then collect the photos a decade later. You'd probably end up with the same selfie obsession. And lots and lots of pictures of people's junk, because porn was created about 30 seconds after the creation of the camera. No more of this pain-staking painting of my porn.

And lots of pictures of food, cats, dogs wearing costumes, and so on. The world has probably always looked like Facebook :)

Never really cared, quite frankly I'm surprised they get the hate that they do. OK I guess it can get annoying if overdone but that can be said about anything.

Now people that posts pics about food, that's just wrong. Because now you're making me hungry with food I can't get to. :p

I don't post selfies because I would have to spend every waking moment breaking women's hearts.

Seriously though, as long as you're not hurting anyone, do what makes you happy.

It's all fun and games until some nekkid chick takes a selfie and it gets sent around the internet and her reputation is forever destroyed.

You clicked here. Don't pretend you didn't! ;)

You can't prove that I clicked that. :D

Not my thing but hey, more power to those that do like them.

It's fine.

It's a completely non-destructive creative outlet that entertains people (either the selfie-maker the selfie-viewer or both). As far as potential fads are concerned I'd have to say that selfies are among the most positive ones out there.

If you enjoy this stuff, great.
I personally don't and just ignore it like anything else that doesn't interest me. No harm done.

To be honest I find them partly a bit... baffling. Yeah, taking pictures of yourself is standard in social media, but the specificity of it is a bit odd to me.

An example: I currently work mostly in night shifts, and the work sometimes involves seemingly standing on the street without doing anything. Last week a group of partying students wanted to take selfies with my coworker, and I'm still a bit confused why. You want to show that you saw two people working at night on the street? Okay, but why do you have to put yourself in the picture? I'm pretty sure people will believe you were there since you took a picture of them. Or is it a collection sort of thing? "Here's me at the Great Wall of China! Here's me at a hot dog stand! Here's me with a group of students I tutored!" Okay, that I get, but once you start flooding my Facebook feed with it, it starts to seem a bit masturbatory. "LOOK AT ALL THESE INTERESTING PLACES I'VE BEEN TO! AREN'T I GREAT!? OH HERE'S SOME MORE OF THE AWESOME STUFF I'VE DONE!"

Maybe I ought to delve more into the culture to try to understand it better. I've never taken a selfie myself.

Its a mindless activity that gives nothing to anyone. I don't care for it, but my discontent is born from confusion....WHY do you selfie? What do you wish to share with the world? your face from a stupid angle? maybe make yourself look glam in a single image of yourself where there are numerous of you NOT dolled up, and anybody who sees it probably knows what you look like.

I'm not into the social media thing (not the "I never use my facebook lol" kind, but literally have not signed up for it) so when people started talking about "selfies" I had to look up what it was. Honestly? I thought it was kinda fitting. Unwarranted attention is the name of the game for social media and holding out your phone at arms length so you can post a picture of yourself is kind of the minimum work required to get attention.

I doubt it, captcha...

To answer the question: I don't mind them.

Explanation:

I like belfies more than selfies.
I've never taken a selfie and only been in like 2 or 3 that I know of.
Don't understand why it must be done all the time...

It's a picture, of yourself. Calling it a selfie and labeling hate for it is the absolute term for ridiculosity.

I know that ridiculosity is not a word, by the way.

I have no problem with it but I wish it was called something else. Yes I get it's short for self images but the word kind of remind of this store Selfridges.

I don't have anything against them. In fact, I'm pretty much indifferent to them. I don't really use facebook at all though(haven't been active there since like 2012), and even though I'm on twitter, I don't really follow/chat with people I know, and pretty much none of them are into selfies, so I pretty much don't really see any actual selfies unless they have gained some level of fame/infamy, enough that they get an article on some random news site. I also think it's pretty heavily implied, but I don't take selfies either.

Im 37 and i have taken many self photos. Especially with me an my girlfriend. An if you look back in history people have been taking photos of themselves in mirrors etc since 1900s. Just now with mobile phones with camera it has now become a thing and acting like its something new. Its not. Now its a fad everyone wants to jump on.

I didn't mind them at first but when the vast majority of you're facebook feed becomes littered in them then I take issue. Seriously I have friends who post selfies of themselves almost 3-8 times a day and it comes off as narcissistic half the time.

I didn't get why it had to be a 'thing'. I didn't understand how it was a fad, why it needed it's own name or even why some people I know consider the name so stupid. It's only taking a photo of yourself, it's been possible since the camera was first invented. It's not a new thing.

On the other hand, I find pictures that were taken in front of a mirror where the end result looks like someone pushing a camera in your face to be really stupid.
