Oh noes, the evil Christians stole your friend and influenced him with their evil evilness, soon he'll be trying to get you to eat crackers with red wine with him.

On a serious note, get over it - and yourself.
I can kind of see the underlying point you're making. But you could have been a bit nicer to the OP...
I could have.

But I hate to waste good advice. Had I been nice about it he might have suspected I was turning the other cheek or something and therefore crazy.

If anything, I should have been more hostile, but the forum rules don't really allow for that.
May I ask what's crazy about turning the other cheek?

I never said it was. The OP is implying his otherwise intelligent friend has apparently lost all credibility due to holding a belief generally expressed by the religious, so...yeah.

hmm, Idk.
I'd have to say that i believe that evolution is a fact, because the bible isn't supposed to be taken literally ( or to quote the best theology teacher EVA) " the bible when looked at as a whole and looked at to observe salvation history can be seen without error, bu individual accounts can be seen as parables, for example, noah probably didn't live to be 600 years old etc..." I'm perfectly cool with evolution because it makes the most logical sense. It might be a theory, but that theory has a lot of truth to it.

assuming that you actually meant "aren't meant to understand" then I completely agree
What do you believe we aren't meant to understand? And who decides what we aren't or aren't meant to understand?

On topic, I'm a lot like the other people here. The OP isn't very clear with what is meant. Furthermore, this is merely an opinion. If he can back it up with any solid argumentation then listen to him before judging what he thinks.

Screw it, I'm not sifting through 10 more pages of this thread and potentially getting banhammered for calling out perceived morons on this issue. Instead, I'm just going to leave these here and anyone who wants to quote me can do so, but don't expect me to reply if you're looking for one from me.

That's more or less the tone of this entire forum when faith/religion is discussed. You're crazy and you've lost any previously held credibility. You get used to it.

Cool story. Not that bigger deal. I suggest everyone who get's their panties in a twist over this ought to get over themselves and go outside.
I agree, waste of time in the end. I have my thoughts, you have yours (not you literally, metaphorically). So let's get on with life.

Ooooh, burn.

Actually, I was going to say "Look at hedgehogs".

Hedgehogs in England are large, slow and curl into a ball for defense.
Like thousands of other otherwise useless or downright harmful critters, the Brits exported a certain number of them to New Zealand. Now, since they're imported you find them still largely around populated areas. And since New Zealand is a 'young' nation (170-odd years), cars, buses and other automobiles have also been around populated areas for roughly half the lifetime of the country.

Large, slow hedgehogs that curl into a ball are unheard of in NZ. Small, agile hedgehogs that run like hell are the only ones that have survived. So hedgehogs have gone from big and slow to small and agile in less than 100 years. That's a visible change in a very short time period.

Instinct leads, intellect follows. Once someone has decided to believe something, not all the evidence in the world will change him assuming his conviction is strong enough.

Okay I know I will get flamed for saying this but I'm not that much of a believer in evolution. What question always comes into my head when people mention evolution is 'If we evolved from apes how come apes suddenly stopped evolving into humans' Just something that is always on the back of my mind.

Me and one of my collage friends were having a discussion that came to be about evolution at some point. what you need to understand before replying is that this guy is probably one of the smartest people out there, the guy is a certified genius.
He practices Judaism up to a certain degree (separates meat a dairy and other stuff) but calling him religious will be a vast exaggeration.

So when this guy, who is probably the smartest guy I ever met told me he didn't believe that humans are apart of evolution it blew me away. To make things worse he said "there are some things that humans are meant NOT to understand. and we are both Comp-Sci majors so rational thought is a given.

So..... WTF?!?!
I'm sorry but the fact that he takes something spiritually instead of scientifically automatically makes him no longer smart?

"Certified genius" that chooses to ignore empirical data with a hand waved "we are not supposed to understand"?

Okay, there's x number of rational explanations:

A) Your friend is messing with you.
B) Your friend is misinformed/ignorant.
C) Your friend is an idiot.

My science gut is really pulling for C here, but the other two shouldn't be ruled out without further data into the system.
Ninja'd.

Trolling, ignorant or just plain retarded. I have no better answer myself.

From what I understand, the existence of gravity and time are still only theories.
Funny that you say that as I had [a href="http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.296314-Time-do-you-believe-in-it"]this thread[/a] open in another tab.

OT: Why does it matter what he thinks? And with all due respect at least in Ohio evolution is not taught correctly. They basically say things change over time without explaining speciation and only glancing over most of the important things. Also I hate that this thread seems to be a lot of religion flaming as I am a devout catholic who supports evolution.

Apes aren't a species, Humans are Apes.
We are Homo Sapiens, we evolved from Homo Erectus (it's ok to laugh).
Homo Sapiens have been around for 250,000 years. Other human species did emerge and evolve, but none of them could compete with us or their enviroments.

Homo Antecessor
Homo Cepranensis
Homo Ergaster
Homo Gautengensis
Homo Georgicus
Homo Habilis
Homo Heidelbergensis
Homo Neanderthalensis
Homo Rhodesiensis
Homo Rudolfensis
Homo Sapien Idaltu

The other modern apes are in a seperate path of genetics. Bonobos, Chimpanzees and Gorilla all have their own evolutionary paths with a common ancestor to man placed around 7 million years ago.

Why is it that people hate on religion so much when by and large Religious people are content to sit quietly and behave?

Have you heard of this thing called.... history?
I'm sure you have and if you take a look back, I'm sure you'll be very grieved to learn that most violence was caused by the abrahamic religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism) and most of the tension in the world still is caused by it.

I say it's time for the abrahamic believers to roll over and let REASON and FACT take their toll on our development.

OT: If people are raised in a household with strong beliefs, then it'll rob onto them.
You say he isn't fanatical about his belief, but perhaps his parents were/are.

Props to the Sonic Says reference.
OP: I think quite a few people do not know what the word theory means in the scientific community.

I think I understand. This thread is HUGE, so someone may have said the already, but I think he took the agnostic approach. Neither creationism nor evolution can be confirmed without a doubt (even if evolution has evidence suggesting that it may have happened). I think he's just arguing that there are some situations where it is okay to just say, "I have no idea" rather than stand behind a theory when a better one doesn't exist.
