Maybe because what passed for Horror became rubbish? yes, I am looking at Paranormal Activity, the movie that not only lacked any level of fear for me, but had no flying box scene.

Slasher films were popular for some reason, and they had a small similarity with Horror, so they eventually began combining them. Eventually Slasher films began to overtake the Horror films, leading to less fear and more intestines painting the floors with blood.
