I'm just wondering when you guys consider yourselves to have "won" an argument. Is it different online versus in real life? Do you need total capitulation from your opponent, or do you mentally tick off "they can't argue against my points, which means they've surrendered"? When do you declare yourself (even if only internally) to be the victor?

If you declare yourself the winner of an argument on the internet then you have probably just lost.

Online:
I generaly believe I won the arguement if the otehr leaves the game / party or mutes me.

In RL:
If instead of replying the give a loud sigh or they begin to get violent.

When my opponent says "Whatever, I don't really care"

I'm ferociously argumentative if I oppose something. I sink my teeth in and don't let go until they back down.

It's very hard to have a decent argument on the internet, your never sure whether they have gone quiet simply because you've won or that they are just afk or had to do something else for an hour, or just thinking. I never believe I have won an argument online unless they surrender.

In real life if I am certain I have won I use the time honoured League Against Tedium quote. "Thus I Win!"

I've won when they either concede or just stop arguing, although that can - situation dependently - be a stalemate. You really Just have to see the argument in context.

I declare victory when ever my opponent starts arguing for my original point. I usually get there by a convoluted series of straw men and slippery slope arguments.

When I mention Hitler, Hitler comparisons ALWAYS win because Hitler was a bad man.

Seriously though, when opponent goes 'whatever' or similar or tries the 'I don't really care. I was just looking at different responses/trolling' etc

When he tries to laugh it off. Somehow it always signals that he realises he can't win.

If you have proven your point with solid and attack-proof arguments and your opponent is incapable of accepting he was wrong there is no point in continuing. You know you're right and that's what counts, if the other one is a blockhead you can't help it.

Once the argument begins I declare victory.

In games I declare victory as soon as possible.

Nothing hits the psyche harder than reading a GG 3 seconds into the game.

Don't need to declare victory in RL or online. The silence I get when I've said my last words are probably enough. That is if the other one doesn't ignore me, or, I'm probably dead :p

Generally, once they've stopped making points that seem reasonable, I consider myself the victor and leave the thread. Most of the time, the final post in an argument will be a response to one of my points that I determine to be flawed on levels unrelated to the content of the argument itself. I don't require validation from my opponent-- many people "lose" to me without ever realizing it, as I'm not very inclined to point out obvious contradictions and fallacies.

The problem is I can't just declare victory like that. It is bad form. Although online I am generally arguing with an idiot who can't see something from a different angle if you gave him a hand-held mirror. Real life is a bit different. Online I generally argue things the other person doesn't understand for whatever reason, but in real life I argue that my point can exist. Mostly they are philosophical debates and it usually ends with us both saying "yeah, I see where you are coming from, but I still don't agree with it". Although the other people I argue with are missionaries that wonder the local college campus and try their damnedest to covert me. In that situation I consider it winning when I end up converting them.

I don't see an argument as something that can be won or lost.

There are two people with different opinions who are attempting to convince each other that their opinion is the correct opinion to have.
Neither will win the argument because they're both convinced that they're right and probably too stubborn to even look at the other's reasoning objectively.

You win an argument or debate by reaching a point where all participants can understand and respect each others' opinion.

Though the usual argument ends in a form of "you're just stupid", which can be seen as some sort of victory as well.

If only PS3 vs Xbox 360 arguements were that sophisticated... online that is.

I take off my clothes, make the Mr. Muscle pose and say "If you can do this, then we shall continue the argument, if not, I win".

Considering that I look like a cross-breed between a Yeti and a big fat Bear, with all the charm of a Desert Mouse...so yeah.
