When do you think games will become so much money that you won't buy close to as many as now and how much money are you willing to spend on a game?

You know I very rarely buy a game. I got a deal on left 4 Dead but I havent but a game in a long time since then. It takes one heck of a game for me to actually think about buying it. Just don't have the money.

*Edit*

although I am saving up for Empire: Total War. That game will be awesome.

We're already headed in that direction. Welcome to the global financial 'crisis'. Many MEDCs are heading or are already in economic recession. We are losing disposable income, fast. The industry will either adapt to this change, or we will suffer. We are seeing developers and publishers suffer already with jobcuts. They cannot afford to reduce game prices, unless they are willing to reduce their profit margins and bonuses to their bigwigs. I see bleak times for gamers my friend, bleak times.

I only pay 30 or so dollars for games(back when I used to game) I think you are already seeing it now at the 59.99 price point (USD) I look back and have about 30 xbox original games but only 7 360 games(in same amount of time(2 years) THough this could be due to my current lack of interest in gaming.

Funny question, really. When will games cost too much? Supply and demand are ever a universal struggle, really. When did games not cost too much for someone?

Personally, a student, I haven't been able to afford every crappy game to come out for quite awhile. Instead, I hold out for the rare gem, and I'm willing to pay a decent box price for that.

Aside from that, I rent - GameFly assures I don't need to buy a console game ever again if I don't want to. GameTap provides more PC games than I could ever finish. The only games I never need to buy are ones that are good and affordable (a $20 gem) or something I've been saving for a long time for (Fallout 3). I finished Mass Effect for the X-Box 360, I'm waiting for it to hit $20 so I'll buy my PC copy.

I've just royally kicked myself out of being a Student any longer, and assuming I can find a job in this recession, methinks I won't be returning to my days of shelling out $50/game/week are over. Its not a matter of games costing too much, it's just a matter of how willing I am to waste my money.

If they get any more expensive than they are now, I probably won't buy any of them.

I hope gaming will be CHEAPER with the ability to download thus saving packaging and shipping (possibly even the need for producers) but my dreams are probably rooted in hopelessness.

Then again, look at Steam, you can save a good $10 in the U.S.

Console game prices in Australia have been around the $100 RRP mark for as long as I've been playing on consoles, so the leap to $110 wasn't a big deal for me when I got my 360. It distresses me a bit that some new games are going for as much as $120, but most of the time as long as I'm picking the game up at release I can find it for $79 give or take ten bucks if I go to JB Hi-fi. I'd say $120 is my breaking point unless it's something I really, really want - otherwise I'm going to look elsewhere. If gaming ever becomes so expensive that even a discounted price at JB is over $100, I'm going to have to seriously rethink my hobbies.

When they hit 80$ (Canadian of course). Currently the most you will ever pay for a game by itself where I live is 70 bucks, and thats only if its the week it came out.

If I can't get it at JB (or other) for $80, I won't be getting it until a price drop.

I can't justify $100+ for a game, no matter how good it is.

I'm in Autralia by the way.

Well worse case senario, you start pirating. I so far only have a couple games coming out next year as far as I know, so money won't be much of an issue

Call me crazy, but I could be on to something, last Christmas I was able to get 6-7 great games for less than 30$ granted they were all used original xbox games but still (actually I think one was not used). Wait until the system becomes outdated and then buy used. I seriously got 5 games for 10$ that way.

Basic supply and demand rules; they sell it at the whatever price people are willing to buy it.

Games will never be imposible for anyone to afford.

I buy most of my games used so I usually never pay more then 30 bucks, I rarely buy on release day and tend to save my purchases for games I am almost completely sure I will enjoy.

I'm hoping the scarcity of cash developers are bound to experience will discourage the eye candy filled, hype fests that offer little in new or enjoyable gameplay. Instead they would need to rely on solid programming and gameplay to entice people to buy their product. Sure they won't look as pretty but graphics were never that important to me.

What I'm saying is if they have to sacrifice anything, please don't let it be fun or innovative gameplay.
