When will it be a "final" Final Fantasy?

I'm slightly annoyed at Square. After all these years all they can seem to do is create more Final Fantasy games, despite the fact that there even being a second Final Fantasy game screwed with the notion presented in the word "final", changing it from the end, or completion of something to mean "the last one unless it sells good" oh, there have been other games, but most of them have been spin offs of Final Fantasy games, and the rest have sucked. I'm just wondering if i'm the only person in internet land who thinks that its time to put it to an end, or am i just mad cos Final Fantasy 12 wasn't that great?

I think your point is legit. I mean, I think Final Fantasy X was the best one i've ever played, it was also the first Final Fantasy game i'd played so i guess that says alot. But since X-2, i feel like the other games went downhill very quickly, which is a real shame seeing as Final Fantasy has inspired so many people and fuelled their imaginations with it's brilliant storytelling, the beautiful graphics (for the console at that time i know that they could be greatly critisised now but you understand what I mean) and the intriguing battles (when you discount all the inbetweeny battles that make you sick to death of the music playing at the time and the turn-taking mode). But then they introduced FF 12 and I thought that the whole game disappointed me.
Anyone else agree?

Me final fantasy ended at final fantasy 7. They can never make a better final fantasy than 7.

Considering FF 7 wasn't all that good. I blame it on the 3Dness of it. :-\

the words, to me, means that i am stating my opinon and personal preference. I understand you like the final fantasy games, and everyone has their favorite games. I am not a reviewer nor do i pay for square enix to make games, so I highly doubt they will lose sleep knowing I'm not a huge fan anymore.

I respect your opinon Orion, but i have to ask: since you feel obligated to defend and attempt to ridicule someone based on their personal preferences and opinon on a game, a person who's opinon has nothing no impact on the game whatsoever i might add, how does it feel to be a Fanboy?

It's called Final Fantasy because Square was going bankrupt at the time and this was their last game they planned to make, only to have it be a huge success, lucky bastards.

I don't like the FF games, but if they sell I don't see a reason that Square should stop making them.

I was waiting for someone to say this . . . haha. Ironic story, isn't it? I wasn't totally thrilled with XII and if XIII is the same result, I'll consider X as my last final fantasy.

Not soon enough. FF12 was bloody terrible. They tried to catch me off guard with The Last Remnant but I'm not falling for that one.

They should give up the ghost before they fully turn into the Sonic Team.

Well OK, let's go. Where do we start? The game mechanics? The same old regurgitated game mechanics from FF7, I've even had a real die hard FF fan agree with me on that, so it must be bad. There's the characters, like the protagonist, Cloud....Tidus....sorry, Vaan who is essentially Tidus in a crop top...who's essentially Cloud but really stupid. And there's Yuna too....sorry, Ashe. And Lulu is back in it, wearing a Playboy Bunny girl outfit, catering to the alternative perverts again, only going from goth to a gothy yiff fetish deal. It's just Final Fantasy X in a different outfit. I'm sure Sin's kicking about somewhere wearing a wig and a Groucho Marx disguise. There's the story too, I finished that in 15 odd hours. I defeated Judge Ghis, I freed the princess, in short I saved the day. That's an ending. At least it was for me, as 2 of my pals (who WERE, at the time, loving the game) said the ending was tosh so I decided to end it on a high note. I've never felt compelled to go back to it again.

It's repeating itself like as if it's got alzheimers, let's do the old girl a favour and just take it out back and shoot it. Final Fantasy 7 would want us too.

To me Final Fantasy will never be the same since the main brains behind the whole franchise left when they released Spirits Within. So for me 10 was the last proper one. I have my eye on Mistwalker for now.

Where there is a company desperate to beat a fanchise like a dead horse (which really has turned into more of a paste at this point), there will not be a final Final Fantasy.

I think that even if Square did stop making Final Fantasy games, I'm sure people will go back and play all the others and keep playing them over and over again because they are just that good.

I try to go back and complete at least two of them each year (This year thinking about doing FFVII & FFIV).

I think when companies have a series with success at this magnitude, they can't help but milk it for everything it's worth. I reckon they'll stop making them when people stop buying them. Even then they might try something drastic to bring everybody back.

look at the last 4 or 5 entries so far, they are so wildly different in gameplay, atmosphere (one is steampunk one is school-like one is a world living in fear etc..),tone, pacing (FFXII had some very cool cut-scenes showing you what the villains were planning). Of course there will be some similarities like chocobos and spell names and some weapons but in general no franchise changes a successful formula as much as square do, i think that deserves a tip of the hat.

that said i think the best FF game is final fantasy tacitcs (better than FF6 and 7 combined) it didnt have random encounters every 10 feet, gameplay was its strength not some annoyance to get through until the story progresses, the story remains excellent until the end (can't say that about disks 2 and 3 of FF7), and the villain actually makes sense when he speaks, has proper motives and doesn't sound like a home-made translation from a one man team (kefka: wait? do i look like a waiter?) omg so corny

still love most FF games (best music in any game imo) with varying degrees

Just to bash the discussion on the first page - 7 through 10 and Tactics I consider the best ones. The series died when 10-2 (X-2) was released and is only dying more and more with every new shitty sequel.

And there won't be any "final" Final Fantasy. Something to do with the company being on the brink of bankruptcy when they threw around FF1.

FF, as I would describe it, is basically retelling the same base story, but they change the setting every game. I feel sad for not playing any of the more recent console editions, because, like Mr. Really, I love me some FF.
