I have been thinking, With all these games, movies, and other forms of media, When will we officially make our first Alien encounter? Obviously there is no direct time that we in fact will [That is if we even do]. So what do you users think that this will occur? What will they be like? And will they play into the stereotype that all Aliens hate us an attempts to end our civilizations.

When we create a FTL Drive, it'll either take us to them on one of the many undetected planets or it'll alert them to us, a-la First Contact.

If we examine Drake's Equation, the practicality of us meeting aliens is slim.

Fuck Drake, though.

Not for a long time. If there are sentient life forms capable of interstellar space travel they'd probably leave us alone until we can sort out all of our issues, and any nonsentient or non spacefaring life would have to be discovered by us, and we won't be leaving our solar system for a few hundred years. I'm pretty sure that Carl Sagan said in cosmos that if a race is able to survive long enough to develop interstellar space travel then they probably will have left war behind a long time ago, so that leaves the possibility of hostile alien invasion, thankfully, quite slim.

Probably this. If there's (at least) one intelligent race out there (which, with the laws of probability and just how fucking big our universe is, is likely) they're probably going to avoid us until we know better than to shoot them down or try to kill them.

Because wave your peace flag all you like, you know as well as I do that with the world being the way it is now, an alien would show up, someone would say the T-word, and then missiles would be flying and we'd all be doomed to sweat under the lash of our nine-tentacled alien overlords.

A Wise Man once said "The only proof we need of other intelligent life in the universe is that no one has made contact with us". Very profound, I'm not sure who said it though.

If its up to us then a long, LONG, looooooooooooooooooooooong time.
Even at Lightspeed it'd take appeoximately 4.5 years to reach the nearest star.
bwahahaha that sounds totally awesome when said in a super serious sci-fi hero voice

But if they decide to visit us then who knows, but why would they want to come here anyway?

Since the universe is so big they are probebly better planets to make contact with, were probebly at the bottem of their "to visit" list.

Make contact with aliens? We still haven't found effective ways to interact with other human beings let alone with others from the stars.

Sorry... sorry... sorry...OT again

*ahem*

Maybe there already here or at lease watching us.

Please, it's already happened - OPEN YOUR EYES. What do you think Roswell was all about, huh? That wasn't no damn weather balloon, that's for sure. And what about that Area 51 place - what do you think they're hiding there? Do you really think that John F. Kennedy is DEAD? HAH! He's obviously living with Janis Joplin on a farm in Idaho....

Why is everyone staring at me?

Weird though it may sound, I actually really look forward to the day we encounter hostile alien life. The reason being, a la Watchmen, if we did make contact with a race that wanted to kill us, chances are good that we'd finally stop killing each other and focus on them instead.

It's probably not going to happen any time soon, but given the probability of extra-terrestrial life existing, I think we will eventually. Not until we're capable of interstellar travel, though.
